Chicago’s best drill has a spark and attention to detail that other scenes can’t match, even if they may be more popular at the moment. Currently, Mello Buckzz is ripping apart any beat that comes her way. On “Pretty Opp,” she is able to raise hell without resorting to the Bane-like voice work adored in New York and showcases knack for nailing bars that you want to rap along to despite their violent imagery: “Come try to take my pipe off me, bet his ass gon’ diddy bop,” she chirps, while the barreling beat fades out for a second. Mello’s rapping is so energetic yet controlled, which is what foundational drill stars like Herb and Bibby had going for them. Listen to “Pretty Opp” and admit that the home of drill is still very much Chicago.

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
