occasional strip mall or a large walled and landscaped property that is either a residential community or a spa/golf/tennis resort. The sightline is broken only by the continuous slope of desert rock as we head to Cathedral City where over the past few years, on a tiny block of Perez Road, a row of mid-century modern shops has popped up. But don’t confuse them with pop-ups: They call themselves the Design Hood. There’s a Brown Saltman/Martin Borenstein modular sofa; a Koch & Lowy vintage brass lamp, a steal at $395; a ribboned mahogany French credenza from the sixties that is a work of art; ten globes, dated by their inclusion of the USSR, that for some reason they’re insisting on selling as a set; a Danish Modern bar cart that I bet is signed. Their eye is excellent, their enthusiasm infectious, and the care they take with their vintage and eclectic collection is evident the moment you step inside the store. Sprays of gold leaves hang on the wall. One piece called “Autumn” particularly caught my eye; painted also with silver and orange, it is more reminiscent of Vermont than the California version of metal art that we know and love. On the wall above a doorway, I spy something that is like a painting in metal, in a class by itself, by the most famous metal artist of them all, C.
