          You can, says Dr. Zeichner, but you may have to be more wary of buying earrings that are unlikely to cause an allergic reaction, like those on this list. Metals like gold, platinum, or titanium are commonly used when a piercing is first performed to allow it to heal properly without causing a reaction in the skin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n

          If you do develop a reaction in the area where jewelry touches the skin, the first step is to remove the jewelry and to apply a moisturizer. \u201cIf the skin is angry, an ointment like Aquaphor is a great option to hydrate and protect the skin,\u201d says Dr. Zeichner. \u201cIf that is not working, you can apply over-the-counter 1% hydrocortisone cream twice daily for a few days to cool down the rash.\u201d And, if that\u2019s not effective, then consider consulting a dermatologist for a prescription medication.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n
