A personal axiom I\u2019ve bastardized from all the inspirational quotes culled on my Instagram: When going to a casual event, be a little overdressed. When going to a formal event, be a little underdressed. Oh! And always dress for the weather. (Which is to say, respect the actual temperature, not just the general seasonal trend.) Of course, winter parties usually see flagrant exceptions to, or total abandonment of these little rules: One invitation to a Winter Wonderland, and it\u2019s bandage dresses as far as the eye can see, like a Miami nightclub landed in snowbound New York.<\/p>\n

So maybe this holiday\u2019s partywear is about a little restraint. Instead of pulling out all the stops, why don\u2019t you take this one easy\u2014sit back and watch. You end up looking like the most seasoned player in the game. And elegance doesn’t have to mean the constraint of organ-relocating constrictive underpinnings\u2014instead, consider its opposite: free-flowing fabrics that are anything but shapeless. Yes, I\u2019m declaring holiday 2014 the season for American sportswear. And so from now on through New Year’s, my holiday party look has been decided: a silk maxi dress with a cashmere pullover, paired with spiky party shoes or embroidered flat mules, depending on what is required. Should you think that layers quash sex appeal, you\u2019ve never seen the true seductive power of a silk maxi skirt pulled up and gathered about the knee as you sit down and cross your legs. Everywhere you go, everything you do is recast in Old Hollywood glamour. (Try a heavy hand with the jewelry: Dramatic drop earrings never felt so right.) Suddenly you\u2019re in the back of a handsome baron’s sleigh, circa 1955, instead of a sweaty cab, blurring by scarlet-studded holly bushes, intent on running red lights. Of course, for a truly elegant evening, I have three words: winter white everything.<\/p>\n

The silk maxi looks as ready for a stole as it does for an end-of-the-night date\u2019s dinner jacket. Modern and throwback at once: Jenna Lyons<\/strong> at the Met Ball, Rihanna<\/strong> at the CFDA Fashion Awards, cocktail-hour Katharine Hepburn in Bringing Up Baby.<\/em> The stuff of Ralph Lauren\u2019s dreams. It’s a throwback to an age when sportswear meant independence and independence meant elegance. We\u2019re still seeing that motif today\u2014 women outfitting themselves according to their own desires and preferences. And it works in a variety of climates, depending on where your holiday travels will take you\u2014just vary the depth of the knit.<\/p>\n

And if you\u2019ve been inspired by the legion of sneaker-head models clad in the Alex Wang “performance” look, it\u2019s the only logical formal conclusion. Channel a yachting Kennedy or maybe Nan Kempner in Aspen\u2014with a varsity cardigan or sweatshirt-style pullover in cashmere for a hint of down-home casual charm. After all, doesn’t luxury always involve a little relaxation?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n
