How does this magically occur? The candle keeps on getting regifted.

Like most SNL skits, the act was hilarious because it resonated. Who hasn’t been tempted to regift in a pinch, (especially this time of year)? But the risks are out there. A recipient who correctly detects that they have received a masked regift will most likely be, justifiably, offended. So is it ever okay to engage in the practice? And if so, what exactly are the rules? We asked Vogue.com editors to weigh in.

“I don’t see anything wrong with regifting, as long as the gift is appropriate,” Vogue.com Living Editor Virginia Van Zanten says. “For example, I often receive wine as a hostess gift and for one reason or another, my mildly wine-snobby husband will let me know that he probably won’t drink that particular bottle. So I hold on to those and re-use them as hostess gifts for others. Why let perfectly good wine that just doesn’t appeal to my husband’s palate go to waste?” A good point, but Van Zanten also had a caveat to share. “Seriously think twice before regifting something that might seem a bit, well, obvious—like the time I received an outfit that was at least two sizes too big, and didn’t have a gift receipt.” Obvious, and a major social blunder, indeed.

Nicole Phelps, Director of Vogue Runway, has a strategy to avoid such faux pas. “If I’m regifting, I tend to be upfront about it and say so. Knowing that a cashmere throw or a leather tote was originally meant for me hasn’t stopped my mother or my sister’s enjoyment of them,” she says.

“I think the concept of regifting is entirely acceptable if you think the person you are gifting the item to will genuinely derive pleasure or enjoyment from said object,” says Edward Barsamian, Vogue.com Style Editor. “If not, then why not donate it or sell it and donate the money to charity? ’Tis the season for giving after all.” True, and either way, a perfectly good object should not go to waste. But can regifting almost be seen as a form of somewhat responsibly minded recycling of its own?

Alessandra Codinha, Culture Editor of Vogue.com, comes down on this side of the debate. “I believe wholeheartedly in regifting—especially if the alternative is just throwing it away,” she says, adding, “I don’t think [the recipient] needs to know, especially, that it’s regifted (and it would behoove you to remove all signs of it), but I don’t see why people are so ashamed of the practice. Whether or not or how much you paid for something shouldn’t affect its meaning.”

Others come down on the opposite side of the argument. “I regift when the gift is of the impersonal variety,” emphasizes Michelle Ruiz, a Vogue.com Contributing Editor. “I might take a bottle of Champagne or wine or (unopened) chocolates that were given to me to a party,” she says. “But, usually, I bring the regift as a bonus, not my sole gesture. Otherwise, my (lapsed) Catholic guilt gets me.”

Still on the fence? Maya Singer, a Vogue.com contributor, has a cheerful outlook on the whole dilemma. “I think it’s totally fine to regift! I encourage it. I get stuff all the time that isn’t right for me, but that’s exactly the thing for one of my friends. I figure it’s a karmic good to pass those items along . . . especially if the other option is buying something new that’s less nice and less suited to the giftee.” Touché.

Source URL: https://www.vogue.com/article/regifting-etiquette-vogue-editors

Living Is Regifting Ever Okay?
