A steady stream of men, women, and children entered the frequently no-frills, one-room shops that dot the neighborhood to observe the traditional New Year’s haircut.

At local institution Hair Le Pell, a woman by the name of Lady Gigi arrived Friday afternoon for her yearly trim with Phyllis Ho, who has been cutting her hair for 40 years. “Tonight you’ve got to get yourself together,” she said, fanning a bold red manicure out before her, “because after midnight, you’re not allowed to wash your hair.”

As Phyllis began to snip and shake out the strands, Gigi explained that the ritual was meant to “cut away the bad luck,” left over from the previous year, and must be done before midnight of New Year’s Day, when hair cannot be shampooed for 24 hours—“because you’ll wash away all your good luck!” In fact, Hair Le Pell and every other Chinatown salon will be closed until Monday.

“For the Chinese, there is a fortune god—that’s what my mom says,” Phyllis added. “They will only approach the person when you look nice; when you look tired, the god doesn’t notice you, so for that reason we Chinese believe haircuts are very, very important.” That goes for everyone: An infant squalled in his mother’s arms as a harried hairdresser expertly navigated his clippers, despite the constant wriggling. Nearby, a stylist quickly wound strand after strand around pink and green plastic curlers, rendering a sculptural crown.

As Phyllis finished up, she put it more simply. “We call it dead ends—it’s not a good thing, right? We cut off the ends and start everything fresh—to look great to welcome the New Year.” There’s a universal beauty in that.

Source URL: https://www.vogue.com/article/chinese-new-year-hair-cut-beauty-traditions-chinatown-new-york

Beauty See How Chinatown Locals Rang in the New Year With This Good Luck Beauty Ritual By Monica Kim January 30, 2017 View Slideshow Before a sea of paper lanterns and lion dancers swept up Mott Street on Saturday—part of the exuberant Lunar New Year’s celebrations that overtook New York City this weekend—the buzz at […]

[2
50
post-933703","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics","tag-vogue-com
["GET
