Even if you fancy yourself a design enthusiast, proficient when it comes to selecting the well-above-average couch when called upon or even casually keeping up with the latest from Salone del Mobile, you\u2019d be forgiven for not knowing much about Wiener Werksta\u0308tte. (You\u2019d also be forgiven for not knowing how to properly pronounce the name.) But Wiener Werksta\u0308tte is actually one of the earliest 20th century\u2019s most creative, and important, design workshops.<\/p>\n

Founded in 1903, Wiener Werksta\u0308tte, which simply translates to \u201cVienna Workshops,\u201d always emphasized its identity as a collective. Great furniture designers such as Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffmann joined the group, as well as less famous designers such as Vally Wieselthier and Carl Otto Czeschka. But what these artists and artisans produced together helped establish contemporaneous modern design, and laid the groundwork for what came next.<\/p>\n

The years in which they operated, after all, were well before the dawn of Abstract Expressionism, let alone mid-century modern design. Wiener Werksta\u0308tte\u2019s philosophies dovetailed nicely with the Arts and Crafts movement, and the products produced tended to focus on the decorative arts. The Workshops also looked ingenuously toward the past, as the Metropolitan Museum of Art\u2019s recent jewel-box of an exhibition, \u201cLate Antique Textiles and Modern Design,\u201d elegantly demonstrated.<\/p>\n

But whereas that show brought a few of the Workshops\u2019s pieces out under the museum\u2019s brick archways, a major new retrospective, \u201cWiener Werksta\u0308tte 1903\u20131932: The Luxury of Beauty,\u201d is now on view at the Neue Galerie. What\u2019s more, while the museum has in fact staged solo shows dedicated to the works of Moser and Hoffmann in the past, this is the first time such an all-encompassing exhibition on the Workshops has been organized in the U.S. Curated by Christian Witt-D\u00f6rring, the exhibition is careful to include all major artists who were members of the Workshops.<\/p>\n

Witt-D\u00f6rring\u2019s efforts have clearly paid off. From an ebonized oak and boxwood inlay table to a silver flower basket, the details seen in these objects will delight any decorative arts enthusiasts. The immersive environments in which they are displayed will also be appreciated by anyone who likes a good interior. These days, it feels as if we are in a moment where mid-century modern aesthetics dominate decor landscapes. You see it in that newly decorated apartment, and everywhere on your Pinterest feed. But for all this interest, it\u2019s important to know what came first\u2014and helped pave the way. Besides, maybe these craft-oriented pieces will even give your holiday shopping an inspired new theme.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
