attendant rasping into the loudspeaker, miles to go before you sleep (or take off, for that matter). Throw in a winter head cold and a vocal toddler three rows back, and it’s enough to bring you to the brink of shouting a Seinfeld-ian “serenity now!” In the 1997 episode, George Costanza’s father, Frank, bellows out the mantra in the back of a taxi before explaining the backstory: “The doctor gave me a relaxation cassette. When my blood pressure gets too high, the man on the tape tells me to say, ‘Serenity now!’ ” But as the catchphrase circulates—driving a once-mellow Kramer to the brink—it turns out to be more stopgap than fix. “Insanity later,” one character says, with a bug-eyed warning.

Two decades later, with a churning news cycle stoking daily angst, the current vein of self-care prescribes a different auditory release: sound baths. Inside meditation centers, vinyasa studios, and wellness-minded destinations (MNDFL and Sky Ting in Manhattan; Los Angeles’s Love Yoga and the Native Hotel), practitioners like Nate Martinez are creating textured soundscapes using instruments like singing bowls, gongs, and tuning forks. The sessions are transporting—but only if you can transport yourself there. “The response I’ve had from people is, ‘I wish I could shrink you and put you in my ear,’ ” Martinez says with a laugh. While it’s hard to top the in-person experience—the reverberating analog waves have a way of cutting through mental chatter—he has landed on a worthy substitute: a just-launched series of sound recordings called Awave. The first two, “Unwind” (10 minutes) and “Clarity” (20 minutes), anchor a growing catalog to follow.

For the Brooklyn-based musician, who runs a recording studio alongside his bicoastal healing practice, translating improvisational sound baths into audio files posed certain challenges—one of them being that “it’s easy for people to shut that sound off because [they sense a] more esoteric, New Age-y, woo-woo aspect to it,” Martinez explains. In other words, anything remotely close to a “serenity now” cassette might trigger a knee-jerk dismissal. But in his hands, the sonic experience—a fluid improvisation that evolves without rhythm or rhyme—marries the intimacy of the studio context with modern convenience. “That’s the thing about recorded sounds: They go where they need to go,” he says of the tracks’ inherent flexibility. “In an ideal situation, you’re in a space where you have a moment to turn off and tune in,” he suggests. But he has already received thumbs-up testimonials from cubicle workers and, in one case, a New Yorker stuck on a gridlocked highway.

That’s when the slow-rolling “Unwind” might dial things down. For that recording, Martinez pared back his diverse cache of instruments to just BioSonic tuning forks, showcasing their higher-pitched peals as well as the softer tones generated by striking metal against knee. “Clarity,” meanwhile, is bubbling and alive with the interplay of Koshi chimes. “They’re higher in frequency, so it’s a little bit more active of a listening experience,” Martinez says—though “it doesn’t mean that somebody might not listen to it and completely pass out.” Which is totally allowed. The whole idea is to offer an easy reset, a way to “tap in and gain a little bit of perspective,” he adds, whether it’s a quiet escape in the guest room at your in-laws’ or a panic-avoidance strategy during a train delay. “This 10-minute thing could become a practice,” he says, quickly adding, “but you don’t even have to refer to it as a practice. It could just be your moment.”

Awave Sound Meditations by NTM Sound Healing: “Unwind,” $5, and “Clarity,” $7, ntmsoundhealing.com

Source URL: https://www.vogue.com/article/sound-bath-recordings-music-nate-martinez-stress-relief-relaxation-energy

Wellness These Soothing Sound Recordings From a Brooklyn Healer Are the Key to Holiday Sanity By Laura Regensdorf December 6, 2017 Photographed by Arkan Zakharov, Vogue, September 2016 Picture this: airplane idling on the tarmac, flight attendant rasping into the loudspeaker, miles to go before you sleep (or take off, for that matter).
