I like to think I\u2019m an adventurous person. I\u2019ve been heliskiing, white water rafting, and to a three-hour experimental performance of The Sound and the Fury<\/em> in which actors switched parts every fifteen minutes, and there was no intermission! So when I got an email from Starbucks announcing their new Juniper Latte, I thought, I will try this for the sake of journalism and the people.<\/p>\n

While the unstoppable pumpkin spice latte is Starbucks\u2019s most popular drink of all time, get this: according to analytics firm Second Measure, December is by far the company\u2019s most profitable month. Sure, a lot of it is because customers are buying presents. But beyond buying a gift card for their weird uncle, people are also springing for festive drinks. Which is why Starbucks has an entire holiday line: the Peppermint Mocha, Caramel Brul\u00e9e Latte, Chestnut Praline Latte, Gingerbread Latte, Eggnog Latte, and now the Juniper Latte, all of which will appear on menus in November and December.<\/p>\n

Starbucks says the Juniper Latte tastes like winter. And winter, to Starbucks, is a \u201chint of juniper and sage,\u201d along with \u201can evergreen aroma and citrus notes.\u201d The full recipe breakdown for their new drink is: espresso, steamed milk, juniper syrup, and pine-citrus sugar.<\/p>\n

But what is Juniper, exactly? It\u2019s a tart, bitter berry that grows on evergreen shrubs, with a taste often described as \u201cpiney\u201d crossed with \u201ccitrusy\u201d (so now that pine-citrus sugar is starting to make sense, huh?). It\u2019s often used to flavor hearty meats like venison or pork, or desserts like fruitcake.<\/p>\n

And what does it taste like in coffee? Unlike, say, caramel or gingerbread, it\u2019s more of an acquired flavor. (Case in point: turns out there were two Elises at my Starbucks today. When Elise #2 accidentally grabbed my drink, she squinted at the label and said to no one in particular, \u201cJuniper?<\/em> This isn\u2019t mine!\u201d) The pine and citrus notes are certainly palpable, and combined with caffeine, they\u2019re herbaceous and biting. Kind of like you went to a 16th century apothecary for your morning cup of joe.<\/p>\n

Or an evening cocktail. Because, yeah, it also takes like you spiked your espresso with gin.<\/p>\n

Juniper is also the key ingredient in the distilled spirit with origins in the middle ages. And when I passed the drink around the office (hope everyone got their flu shot!), most tossed out a couple of descriptors\u2014fragrant, medicinal, woody\u2014before pursing their lips and going, \u201cand er, like gin.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

As someone who drinks (and writes) about gin, I agree. Sipping it, I felt like I was back at the Coral Bar in London. Except instead of trying to charm the well-suited bartender, I was at my desk responding to emails with more exclamation points.<\/p>\n

So will you like the new Juniper Latte? If you like fragrant drinks, or adding CBD to your oat-milk cappuccino, maybe. If you like a gin and tonic? Definitely. So excuse me while I ask the barista to pour it over ice.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n
