What to do when it\u2019s cold outside and you\u2019re home and bored senseless? You could tackle that long overdue closet rehaul, but wouldn\u2019t it be much more fun to grab a friend, a cuppa something hot, and watch a movie or miniseries? As the choices on streaming services can seem endless, here\u2019s a tight edit: 19 selections, each of which inspired a Spring 2019 collection. On the list: the binge watch\u2013worthy Babylon Berlin<\/em>, from which Tom Ford borrowed a theme song and a brooding decadence for his dressed-up collection; Jaws<\/em>, of course, courtesy of Raf Simons at Calvin Klein; and The Witches of Eastwick<\/em>, which inspired Attico\u2019s splashy stay-out-all-night looks\u2014plus, many more. Angel<\/em> (2011)<\/strong>
Drama is part and parcel of the work of Section 8, a fashion collective fronted by Akeem Smith that teases and tantalizes with the anonymity of its authorship. Its still-emerging aesthetic is strong on tailoring with an avant-garde twist. For Spring, reported Chioma Nnadi, Section 8 re-created scenes \u201cfrom Angel<\/em>, Sebastiano d\u2019Ayala Valva\u2019s documentary about a trans woman living in Paris, who works as a boxer by day and a prostitute by night to support her family back in Ecuador. There\u2019s a simpering provocateuse energy running through the clothes, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Babylon Berlin<\/em> (2017)<\/strong>
Sex and decadence are words that can be used to describe Tom Ford\u2019s aesthetic and the vibe of Weimar Berlin. The designer, who has one foot in film and the other in fashion, was watching the Babylon Berlin<\/em> series, and revisiting his back catalog, as he whipped up an ultra-luxurious Spring collection dripping with glamour (leopard print, fringe) and intrigue (trenchcoats).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Badlands<\/em> (1973)<\/strong>
Karen Walker\u2019s Spring lineup mixed references to the Garden of Eden with a Midwestern 1970s mood, culled from the gritty drama Badlands<\/em>. The movie stars one of the designer\u2019s all-time-favorite muses, Sissy Spacek, who plays the fresh-faced Holly Sargis, a young woman with a penchant for jeans and the puffed sleeves of a neo-prairie woman.<\/p>\n

Creamy Mami, the Magic Angel<\/em> (1983)<\/strong>
Undercover\u2019s Jun Takahashi skipped the runway in favor of a lookbook that was organized into different episodes, opening with David Bowie and closing with a sequence, done in collaboration with John Derian, of black clothes whose celestial prints were revealed under ultraviolet black light. In the middle was an homage to Creamy Mami, the Magic Angel<\/em>, \u201ca 1980s Japanese anime show,\u201d noted Nicole Phelps, \u201cthat is an obsession of current-day Tokyo otaku (geeks).\u201d<\/p>\n

Disney Classics<\/strong>
This year marks the 90th anniversary of Mickey Mouse\u2019s creation. Evidently, he was too busy to make it to Coach\u2019s Spring show and sent his \u201cpeople\u201d instead. Worked into Stuart Vevers\u2019s bohemian, festival-ready collection were images of Dumbo and characters from Bambi<\/em> and The Aristocats<\/em>, all of whom were watched over by a giant iron dinosaur.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Endless Summer<\/em> (1966)<\/strong>
The ideal of the Spring season was the sun-kissed, free-spirited, one-with-nature surfer. At Etro, this type was evoked by models in tropical prints and manifested in the flesh by Victoria Vergara and Maribel Koucke, pro surfers. While you won\u2019t catch a glimpse of anything looking remotely like the paisley-printed boards they carried in Bruce Brown\u2019s cult film The Endless Summer<\/em>, its spirit infused Veronica Etro\u2019s lineup.<\/p>\n

Escapism was the main message of the Spring season. IRL, Atlein designer Antonin Tron let loose surfing in Indonesia, but on the runway, he \u201cwas thinking about the utopian idylls depicted in the work of French animator Ren\u00e9 Laloux, specifically his 1973 movie Fantastic Planet<\/em>,\u201d reported Mark Holgate.<\/p>\n

Raf Simons has been soaking up American culture through films; for his Spring Calvin Klein show, he drew on two classics in a collection that veered from sophisticated to sporty, referencing his sources directly (Jaws<\/em> poster prints, bite-slashed skirts, twisted cocktail dresses, and mortarboards \u00e0 la The Graduate<\/em>).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Carol and Sarah Piron, the 30-something sisters behind Filles \u00e0 Papa (Daddy\u2019s Girls), made a splash with a Spring collection meant to evoke the sexy cool of poolside lounging. Starting with the idea of water parks, the duo \u201cspliced it with references to iconic scenes from such films as The Swimmer<\/em> and Swimming Pool<\/em>, with a little Wild Things<\/em> and Spring Breakers<\/em>,\u201d reported Tina Isaac-Goiz\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Attico\u2019s Giorgia Tordini and Gilda Ambrosio, the chic Italian design duo, who, as Sally Singer observed, are \u201centhralled by older ideas of glamour,\u201d fell under the aesthetic spell of Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer. In place of the good versus evil push and pull that propelled the The Witches of Eastwick<\/em>\u2019s plot, the pair offered a dazzling array of choices for their high-living customer. Call it an embarrassment of riches or, simply, a win-win situation.<\/p>\n

World on a Wire<\/em> (1973)<\/strong>
Mark Holgate wrote of Kwaidan Editions\u2019 Spring collection: \u201cIt was all coolly elegant and utterly compelling, yet there was also\u2014and I mean this as a compliment\u2014something jarring and off, unsettling even, a sense that what\u2019s surface and what\u2019s beneath sat in an uneasy dialog.\u201d Not surprisingly, one of L\u00e9a Dickely and Hung La\u2019s references was Rainer Werner Fassbinder\u2019s dystopian made-for-TV series World on a Wire<\/em>, the focus of which was illusion versus reality in a technological world. Heady stuff, yet spot on in our \u201cfake news\u201d era.<\/p>\n
