What one person finds cloying, another may find adorable; what one finds cringe-y another may find hysterical.

Despite this, there’s no denying the genre’s everlasting appeal. Rom-coms have captured our hearts for centuries—the ancient Greeks were fans, and Shakespeare even wrote a few—with notable peaks and valleys in their power and prevalence. While many in the modern era say the golden age of the rom-com began in 1989 with When Harry Met Sally and ended in the early aughts, there are plenty of recent films to prove that the category is alive and well. (La La Land and Licorice Pizza, anyone?)

However you slice it, the basic recipe for the best rom-coms remains unchanged: one part romantic love plus one part humorous high jinks. The story of the listless Benjamin Braddock, recent college graduate who begins an affair with his father’s partner’s wife, and ends up falling for her daughter, did more to advance the critical value of comedy than perhaps any other film.
