A later-than-usual Thanksgiving meant the seasonal shopping window was shorter than usual too, so there’s a good chance you’re still crossing people off your list. While it’s tempting to take the easy route and place a massive online order, we can think of a few reasons to avoid an e-commerce haul—least of all because it’s too late to guarantee on-time arrivals. Carriers such as FedEx, UPS, and the U.S. Postal Service are expected to deliver a record number of packages this holiday season, and delays and lost items are highly likely.

All of those orders will probably require a record number of flights and trucks too, not to mention cardboard boxes and the plastic packaging that comes inside. That’s a lot of waste, and if you’re conscious of your carbon footprint this season, you’re better off shopping IRL at your local boutiques. Not only will you avoid excessive packaging and support small businesses, but these are the places to go and discover new artists, designers, beauty brands, and other treasures you wouldn’t know to search for online. We’re particularly lucky to be surrounded by so many well-curated specialty stores here in New York, but even longtime residents need a few tips now and then. Who better to ask for shopping recommendations than Vogue editors? We asked 17 staffers to share their neighborhood finds, hidden gems, and brand-new shops throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, and even upstate. From furniture shops to artful cafés, read all of their recs, below.

Virginia Smith, fashion director

Tradewinds in Hudson, New York, is a great place to shop on so many fronts. It’s a nonprofit store that offers fair trade items from both local and global artisans as well as items crafted by individuals with disabilities. It has beautiful toys for kids and interesting salts and spices for the chef in your life. Jao’s first brick-and-mortar store on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn is based on a vintage Paris apothecary, and besides the fabulous Jao products, there are great blankets and soaps, and even the superchic blue-and-white floor tiles are for sale. Aside from having the most amazing facials, Rescue Spa also has a great selection of beauty products—Biologique Recherche, Dr. Barbara Sturm, Dr. Vranjes, and Wonder Valley to name a few. And who doesn’t like a bottle of bubbly or a small-production wine you’ve never heard of? Chamber Street Wines is one of the best wine stores in the city.

Nicole Phelps, director, Vogue Runway

I find the best gifts at the Alchemist’s Kitchen in the East Village, whether that’s a crystal for my 11-year-old son’s collection, a Sacred Space room mister for my sister, or Jetlag Remedy Tincture for me. Lots of good vibes in there.

Chioma Nnadi, fashion news director

I’m ashamed to admit that I’m a total last-minute shopper. As a result, I tend to do all my holiday shopping at one place. In the past couple of years, I’ve always ended up at Coming Soon, an art and design store on the Lower East Side. It has a really good selection of kooky ceramics (think: side dishes in the shape of a bathing lady) and sophisticated stocking fillers (I bought my brother a really chic set of marble ice cubes there last year). It’s also fun to ogle the cool furniture, even if I’ll probably never be able to afford the gorgeous fringed lamps or fancy neon light fixtures.

Rickie de Sole, head of fashion initiatives

I am going to Holiday on Madison [at 831 Madison Avenue] to get my holiday gifts this year. The pop-up is open until December 23 and provides one-stop shopping for well-curated gifts, many from female-founded businesses that I love to support, including Grace Fuller’s florals and Indré Rockefeller’s Paravel luggage.

Ella Riley-Adams, senior living and beauty editor

My local coffee shop in Brooklyn’s Clinton Hill, Head Hi, is a worthy destination for a well-curated selection of art books and zines. I recently picked up birthday gifts in the form of Phaidon’s Breaking Ground: Architecture by Women and a hand-drawn psychedelic plant calendar for 2020. It also sells select home goods, including mugs, delectable Brooklyn-based Masha Tea, and bright pom-pom keychains. To turn your trip there into a gift-buying extravaganza, make an appointment to check out the bonsai shop next door, and pick up some rugelach at Russ & Daughters’s Navy Yard location.

Alexandra Michler, director of fashion development

I love to shop at William & Wayne. It’s a New York institution, and whatever you buy there, be it a current best-seller or a rare first edition, it feels like you’re investing in keeping a classic alive. At the same time, you’re giving a gift that comes from somewhere very real, somewhere with its own story.

Laird Borrelli-Persson, archive editor

My holiday shopping agenda always includes three local stops: The Greenwich Exchange for Women’s Work, which is the perfect place to find handmade presents for kids, from sweaters to wooden toys, and you never know what you’ll find in the little vintage-filled house behind the main store. Back 40 for homewares with backstories. And finally, a stop for myself: the Village Ewe for a needlepoint canvas and thread to pass the time on a flight or in front of the fire.

Emily Farra, senior fashion news writer

Warm is one of my favorite shops in New York, holiday season or not. It’s one of the only places I can find gifts for everyone on my list: handmade jewelry for my sister, ceramics and beautiful bath products for my mom, and groovy T-shirts or Warm sweats for my boyfriend. I’m also excited about Apiece Apart’s new shop in Tribeca: In addition to its beautiful, wearable clothes, it sells jewelry and beauty products by hard-to-find brands, and it’s conveniently located a few blocks from the office. When I’m in the West Village, I love stopping by the Village Apothecary for beauty gifts, and I’ll be making several trips to Tombolo’s holiday pop-up on Bleecker Street. It collaborates with artists to create unique prints for its vintage-y Hawaiian shirts, which I’m planning to pick up for my dad and brother. Its ultra-cozy new quilted jackets aren’t to be missed either!

Liana Satenstein, senior fashion news writer

I go to Jane at New Top Jewelry if I want to buy someone a chain or a charm. Sneak in a visit to the Met Breuer, and end it all with a dirty martini at Bemelmans Bar!

Rachel Hahn, fashion news writer

Lara Koleji, a pint-size store that opened in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, this summer, is one of my favorite places to shop. It’s quickly become a haven for New York vintage fanatics in the know; on any given weekend, you’re likely to see the owners of Chinatown vintage store James Veloria rummaging through the shop’s small racks. If, for some reason, a well-curated mix of vintage Prada, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Betsey Johnson pieces doesn’t do it for you, it also has a fun selection of campy deadstock T-shirts, beautiful antique jewelry, shoes, and housewares, like hand-painted ceramics and handblown glassware. Lara Koleji fills up every square inch of the tiny space (even five people will likely feel packed in like sardines) with something to marvel at.

Christian Allaire, fashion news writer

I recently made my first visit to John Derian in the East Village, and I’m obsessed. It’s important to me in terms of sustainability. I know that when I buy used clothing, I’m not contributing to a demand for fast fashion that promotes exploitative labor practices and destroys our environment. This season I’ll be shopping for friends and family at places like Screaming Mimi’s in the West Village (great for your zany best friend who believes that Halloween is a year-long holiday), the Break in Greenpoint, Brooklyn (excellent for your minimalist pal who lives in vintage suiting), and Stella Dallas in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (a must for vintage denim, varsity coats, and ’50s day dresses).
