When the tree at Rockefeller Center arrived this year, the internet deemed its less-than-perfect posture as a metaphor for 2020. The scraggly tree, 75-feet tall and 11 tons, had big gaps in its branches after traveling 200 miles to get to the city (further than most New Yorkers had traveled in the preceding months). Jealousy and skepticism led internet onlookers to dismiss 2020 as a total disaster until a small owl was found wrapped in the tree\u2019s prickly branches. Even in a bad year, cute surprises take place.<\/p>\n

For the boutique clothing brand Leorosa, the past year has also presented challenges that led to pleasant developments. Founded by Julian Taffel and Paolina Leccese, the brand\u2019s first collection, an array of colorful cardigans, made its debut at a trunk show in an apartment on the Upper East Side and at a pop-up store in London. Part of Leorosa\u2019s founding philosophy is the intent to sell clothes in an intimate way that encourages community as well as permanence. During lockdown, the founders started to interview their friends and family members, leading to the release of a magazine alongside the otherwise digital debut of their second collection. Collection II consists of equally timeless cardigans with an emphasis on buoyant collars, explained by the designers as their exploration of the \u201cuniform.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taffel and Lecesse are responding to this year with heightened imaginations, channeling their inspirations into their wildest dreams to create a Leorosa-style Christmas with Vogue<\/em>. \u201cThere is this wonderful piece by Andreas Schulze that represents the overall mood,\u201d Taffel says of the artist\u2019s oil painting, a long table draped with a white cloth, decorated with beads, lamps, a giraffe and other oddities. The piece is called Untitled (Ich kaufe nichts)<\/em>, meaning \u201cI don\u2019t buy anything\u201d in German. While Taffel and Leccese consider this the perfect sentiment for the year, they\u2019re also excited about some newly released Leorosa gloves\u2014made to cherish, and to be passed down.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Here, Taffel and Leccese share their favorite holiday traditions and items that make for a festive time at home, wherever you are, because as they say, \u201cwhimsical and fun seem to be what we all need right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where were you both born and where do you live now?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Currently we both live in our home cities\u2014Cologne and New York. But Leorosa is still looking for a permanent home. Any tips?<\/p>\n

What are both of your Christmas plans? Who will you be spending the holidays with?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Is there anything NOT happening this year that you will miss?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Certainly not weddings. Maybe Christmas parties?<\/p>\n

What is your earliest Christmas memory?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Paolina: \u201cThe Christmas Bell. It was gold with a black top, and when my father would ring it, it meant that Santa had arrived and the gifts were delivered under the tree.\u201d<\/p>\n

Julian: \u201cWe would always create our own Christmas tree by cutting out the shape from a large piece of green cardstock. From there we would make illustrations, add stickers, and punch holes in for lights and hang ornaments over them.\u201d<\/p>\n

You mentioned on the phone that Leorosa is a lifestyle brand more than a fashion company. Can you explain that?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We love to discover different ways to create a world beyond our cardigans. For the second collection, we created a magazine that explores our initial idea of uniformity. Through it we were able to work with writers and artists to create something tangible that represents our vision of the brand. It was the first time either of us made a magazine, and it was so much fun. Maybe we will make a second edition for the third collection. Who knows! For the first collection we designed a small temporary shop with lavender walls and blue and yellow velvet curtains. We love imagining a Leorosa world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
