Two years ago, right before life as we knew it changed dramatically, I threw a holiday party. I slipped into a red dress, painted on a cat eye, and in hopes of channeling the hostess to end all hostesses\u2014Breakfast at Tiffany\u2019s<\/em> Holly Golightly, of course\u2014had my hair fashioned into a bouffant. It proved to be the ultimate head-swiveling hairstyle, and as we usher in a holiday party season that feels decidedly merrier after a tough year and a half, I can\u2019t help but feel called back to it. It doesn\u2019t hurt that Instagram has been rife with references for an inspired take.<\/p>\n

There was the backstage footage at Moschino\u2019s spring 2022 show, where hair legend Danilo put his own spin on the classic teased style\u2014one he called a cross between the famed Breakfast at Tiffany\u2019s<\/em> do and Cindy Crawford\u2019s \u201990s French twist\u2014accented with chunky, contrasting highlights \u00e0 la Ms. Golightly. And then there was all the glamorous red carpet action, from Lady Gaga\u2019s ultra-sleek iteration punctuated by a set of razor-sharp baby bangs at the New York premiere of House of Gucci<\/em> to Tessa Thompson\u2019s gravity-defying \u201cbreakfast at TT\u2019s\u201d bouffant moment, as hairstylist Lacy Redway called it, at the Gotham Awards.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I love to do for Black women going to Hollywood events is show that textured hair can do anything,\u201d explains Redway, who, in collaboration with Thompson, decided they would remix retro hairstyles during the actors\u2019 Passing<\/em> press tour, pulling inspiration from Hepburn for their imaginative bouffant moment. Upping the drama, Redway wrapped strips of black latex around the base of Thompson\u2019s twist to match her glossy evening gloves. \u201cEven if you\u2019re referencing a hairstyle that\u2019s not of this current time, adding an updated hair accessory can make it feel modern,\u201d she says. \u201cIt took the look from Audrey Hepburn [in 1961] to Tessa Thompson in [2021].\u201d<\/p>\n

Mischa G, New York hairstylist and owner of East Village hair salon Tree House Social Club, also loves to see twisted updos \u201cdressed up\u201d with hair accessories, such as velvet ribbons and sparkling pins, for an extra dose of personality. The beauty of beehives is that they’re strikingly versatile. \u201cBouffants can either be sweet and demure or more bad-girl-in-the-\u201960s, a little messed up from singing in a band or running around the party scene,\u201d she explains. \u201cIt\u2019s a style that someone who doesn\u2019t want to hide wears\u2014because you can\u2019t really hide when you have that much height on your head.\u201d<\/p>\n

In crafting a bouffant, you want to build a strong foundation with hair that has some grit to it\u2014especially if you have unprocessed hair. \u201cIt\u2019s all about texture, texture, texture,<\/em>\u201d says Mischa G. \u201cIf your hair is super healthy and slippery, the shape will just fall out, which is why bleached hair works wonders for styling bouffants. If you don\u2019t have bleached hair, use a texture spray, like Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray, to really build volume.\u201d If you want to smooth out texture for your twist, Redway recommends applying a lightweight mousse, like Nexxus Mousse<\/strong> Plus Volumizing Foam, and blow drying with a round brush for extra body. While the hair is still warm, set it in pin curls, paying extra attention to the crown \u201cwhere you\u2019ll need the most volume.\u201d Then, take a teasing comb and backcomb the crown to give it lift and volume, before smoothing it down with a flat brush misted with hairspray, like Nexxus Weightless Hold hairspray. Pro tip: \u201cDepending on the thickness of the hair, I sometimes use small bun fillers that match the hair color in the crown,\u201d says Mischa G. \u201cIt will make the shape a little bit more solid without having to overtease it.\u201d To put it up, pull the hair back into a ponytail, twist it in the desired shape (being sure to hide the ends), and pin it into place with U-pins before setting it with as many blasts of high-hold hairspray as it takes.<\/p>\n
