When Taylor Swift first made her mark on the music world, she was a young country singer with buttery blonde corkscrew curls and cowboy boots. A lot has changed since then\u2014like, a lot<\/em>\u2014but the mid-2000s curls made a cameo appearance in Swift’s new music video, \u201cThe Fate of Ophelia,\u201d in a very surprising shade indeed.<\/p>\n

Swift has experimented with different shades of blonde throughout the years, starting with that bright, golden hue of her country-star years and evolving into a darker wheat blonde after a brief but memorable foray into platinum. She wears a few different blonde hues in the \u201cFate of Ophelia\u201d video, starting with a long, golden wig worn in a half-up style for a romantic, Shakespearean vibe, then shifting into Marilyn Monroe mode in a retro platinum bob, but a little over a minute into the video, she tries out a color she’s never worn before: red!<\/p>\n

In the scene, which takes place on a pirate ship, Swift wears a long, curly copper-red wig as she swashbuckles her way across the boat. Both her hair and gown look very<\/em> similar to the famous painting of Ophelia done by Sir John Everett Millais, with the tragic heroine submerged in water, her reddish curls flowing around her. The curls are slightly less defined than her Taylor Swift<\/em> and Fearless<\/em> ringlets, but they’ve got that same voluminous energy, even while plunging off the boat.If Swift ever wants to mix things up again like she did with the platinum blonde, this exact shade of red looks really<\/em> good on her\u2014not to mention with her signature bright red lip.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the video, Swift revisits life as a brunette, which she’s done in several music videos of the past, including \u201cWildest Dreams\u201d and \u201cYou Belong with Me.\u201d She tries out a ’60s girl-group shag and a bob with bangs before returning to her dark blonde roots. topped with a showgirl headdress.<\/p>\n
