The blessed event is finally here: Mad Men<\/em> is officially streaming on HBO Max in 4K as of December 1, and I, for one, am extremely ready to revisit the slicked-haired, cig-ripping, Scotch-swilling ways of Don Draper and company. (Not for nothing did I once throw a Mad Men<\/em>-themed holiday party in my college suite, for which I made \u201960s-style Grasshoppers that almost gave everyone alcohol poisoning.)<\/p>\n

Below, find literally every thought I had about Season 1, Episode 1 of Mad Men<\/em>, \u201cSmoke Gets In Your Eyes\u201d:<\/p>\n

  1. It\u2019s the floaty little falling-businessman song!<\/li>\n
  2. God, we used to be a proper country.<\/li>\n
  3. (While this show was on the air, I mean, not during the time period it depicts.)<\/li>\n
  4. I know \u201960s bars wouldn\u2019t<\/em> necessarily have been fun for me as a fat, gay woman, but I can\u2019t help admiring their hustle and bustle anyway.<\/li>\n
  5. I forgot that the full sentence \u201cI love smoking\u201d is spoken aloud within the first two minutes of this pilot.<\/li>\n
  6. Also: \u201cLadies love their magazines.\u201d<\/li>\n
  7. I feel a little personally attacked by that one, as someone with a 2000s-era YM<\/em> and a 1979 People<\/em> magazine with Miss Piggy on the cover currently on the way to my apartment via eBay.<\/li>\n
  8. Midge! My wife! My mean-brunette prototype!<\/li>\n
  9. Taking notes on Midge\u2019s apartment decor for furnishing my own studio.<\/li>\n
  10. This drafting table, for example, rocks.<\/li>\n
  11. The line \u201cI love you, Grandma\u201d has never been so hot.<\/li>\n
  12. \u201cI don\u2019t make plans, and I don\u2019t make breakfast.\u201d Iconic.<\/li>\n
  13. How did women not snap and mass-murder men more regularly in the \u201960s?<\/li>\n
  14. Aw, it\u2019s Hildy!<\/li>\n
  15. \u201cI have an important appointment right now, so why don\u2019t you go shopping or something?\u201d I do not<\/em> want a man to talk to me like this, but a woman could and should.<\/li>\n
  16. Okay, the woman in the framed picture in Pete\u2019s office is not<\/em> the Trudy Campbell we know and love, so clearly they hadn\u2019t cast Alison Brie yet.<\/li>\n
  17. We love a minor inconsistency, don\u2019t we, folks?<\/li>\n
  18. Joan Holloway, ladies and gentlemen! We are so back.<\/li>\n
  19. \u201cAlso, men love scarves.\u201d LOL.<\/li>\n
  20. Is that\u2026true?<\/li>\n
  21. Ah, casual anti-semitism, the bread and butter (or\u2026Wonder Bread and Jell-O?) of the \u201960s.<\/li>\n
  22. The amount of gay that Salvatore is serving from the pilot of this show is truly remarkable.<\/li>\n
  23. Like\u2026if I were a closeted ad man in the \u201960s, I might not turn in sketch drafts of my shirtless male neighbor, but listen, I don\u2019t know his life!<\/li>\n
  24. This German woman is terrifying.<\/li>\n
  25. Actually, is she\u2026Viennese?<\/li>\n
  26. Am I as dumb as these \u201960s ad execs?<\/li>\n
  27. Thanatopsis time!<\/li>\n
  28. In many ways, Peggy Olson invented Bushwick bangs.<\/li>\n
  29. Or are we calling them Rama bangs now?<\/li>\n
  30. God, Pete is such a creep.<\/li>\n
  31. I could watch an eight-hour supercut of Don shutting Pete\u2019s barf-inducing \u201cfraternity house\u201d misogyny down.<\/li>\n
  32. My God, this show is really a compendium of enchanting brunettes, isn\u2019t it?<\/li>\n
  33. And on that note\u2026we meet Rachel Menken!<\/li>\n
  34. I need a copy of this \u201960s doctor-provided book titled It\u2019s Your Wedding Night<\/em> to display in my apartment.<\/li>\n
  35. Aw, I love that Joan sent Peggy to her gyno! Girls are gonna girl.<\/li>\n
  36. That said, the mere thought of being in 1960s-era stirrups makes me want to die a little bit.<\/li>\n
  37. I badly want to shop at Rachel Menken\u2019s department store, and no, this isn\u2019t a euphemism (entirely).<\/li>\n
  38. Yay, more of Don humiliating Pete.<\/li>\n
  39. I really feel like I could have won over the Sterling Cooper phone operator girlies, especially the one played by Kristen Schaal.<\/li>\n
  40. I want to work at Lucky Strike\u2019s self-funded Tobacco Research Center.<\/li>\n
  41. Actually, that was probably the one workplace in 1960s America more sexist than Sterling Cooper, so nevermind.<\/li>\n
  42. \u201cNo, everybody else\u2019s tobacco is poisonous. Lucky Strike\u2019s is toasted.\u201d And that\u2019s why they pay him the big bucks, baby.<\/li>\n
  43. \u201cIt\u2019s not like there\u2019s some magic machine that makes identical copies of things.\u201d Dramatic irony boots!<\/li>\n
  44. Oh God, Peggy, don\u2019t put the moves on Don. That\u2019s your work wife-to-be!<\/li>\n
  45. God, transport me to a \u201960s strip club, stat.<\/li>\n
  46. Or at least the store where the strippers buy their lingerie.<\/li>\n
  47. I mean, those nip tassels!<\/li>\n
  48. God, I hate Pete so<\/em> much.<\/li>\n
  49. Deep respect for Rachel Menken\u2019s drink order: a fruit-and-mini-umbrella-laden Mai Tai.<\/li>\n
  50. This hairstyle rocks so hard, too.<\/li>\n
  51. Don really getting his Jewish mother on as he hectors Rachel about why she isn\u2019t married, isn\u2019t he?<\/li>\n
  52. Ugh, Pete seducing Peggy is maybe the worst thing he does in this pilot that\u2019s chock-full of egregious Pete behavior.<\/li>\n
  53. Again\u2026rise up and kill men, \u201960s women!<\/li>\n
  54. I\u2019m so team Marjorie, Peggy\u2019s judgmental roommate.<\/li>\n
  55. Aaaaaaaand\u2026wife reveal!<\/li>\n
