and inclusion consultancy Tilting the Lens, is pushing forward for adaptive design. Burke has spent the last year working on an open-source white paper on how fashion brands can better understand the disabled community.<\/p>\n<p>The playbook, \u201cCo-Designing Adaptive Fashion With the Disabled Community\u201d, which was partly funded by Asos, touches on the power of co-design, the accessibility gap within the fashion market, how to connect with the disabled community through solutions and practices, as well as creating a sustainable landscape for disabled consumers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we began to undertake the research, both quantitative and qualitative, with over 100 disabled people from a global perspective, we began to realize that the insights that we were collecting and the frameworks that we were developing couldn\u2019t and shouldn\u2019t just stay with us,\u201d says Burke, when referencing her decision to make the paper open for all.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"AssetEmbedWrapper-fkZDUs kHRAYC asset-embed\">\n<div class=\"AssetEmbedAssetContainer-eEeytc eRSvCP asset-embed__asset-container\"><span class=\"SpanWrapper-zEXFr koTknX responsive-asset AssetEmbedResponsiveAsset-cIfZLr fHIkTW asset-embed__responsive-asset\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Image may contain Body Part Face Head Neck Person Happy Smile Adult Photography Portrait and Dimples\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"ResponsiveImageContainer-eNxvmU cfBbTk responsive-image__image\" src=\"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/11-27-25-the-ultimate-adaptive-fashion-playbook-vogue-business-story-inline.jpg\" title=\"11-27-25-the-ultimate-adaptive-fashion-playbook-vogue-business-story-inline\"><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"CaptionWrapper-jYrTxZ jNLyNY caption AssetEmbedCaption-fyuOdR iTyhpv asset-embed__caption standard\" data-testid=\"caption-wrapper\"><span class=\"BaseWrap-sc-gzmcOU BaseText-eqOrNE CaptionText-brNLzD deqABF bhzovp fGraOh caption__text\">Sin\u00e9ad Burke, chief executive officer of Tilting the Lens.<\/span><span class=\"BaseWrap-sc-gzmcOU BaseText-eqOrNE CaptionCredit-eowWKH deqABF mdLVF gxwcqg caption__credit\">Photo: Courtesy of Tilting the Lens<\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"GridWrapper-cFSKbf cxzKYj grid grid-margins grid-items-2 ArticlePageChunksGrid-hkPQhP lnoYVP grid-layout--adrail narrow wide-adrail\" data-journey-hook=\"grid-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-beYvyV kCPYUp grid--item grid-layout__content\">\n<div class=\"BodyWrapper-kzyFNv nCpFP body body__container article__body\" data-journey-hook=\"client-content\" data-testid=\"BodyWrapper\">\n<div class=\"body__inner-container\">\n<p>\u201cOver 25 per cent of the sample that we engaged with said that they didn\u2019t even know that adaptive fashion existed,\u201d she says. \u201cIt really just created a call to action within ourselves and the need to open source the information, insight and frameworks, in the hopes that adaptive fashion and accessibility holistically becomes part of the wider agenda across curriculums, conversations and business strategies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adaptive fashion has been largely embraced by the high street, with the likes of Primark and Asda\u2019s George in the UK, but Burke\u2019s mission is to get luxury involved.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The disabled community wants a fair shot<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In the summer, Burke worked with Tommy Hilfiger on bringing adaptive fashion to this year\u2019s CFDA\/<em>Vogue<\/em> Fashion Fund, introducing an initiative that pairs 10 designers with muses from the disabled community in creating an adaptive-friendly look. \u201cWhat we really tried to put in place was a co-design framework, ensuring that disabled people are equal stakeholders when it comes to design and that there\u2019s learning happening across the partnership,\u201d says Burke.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Ashlynn Park of Ashlyn, who was paired with influencer and disability advocate Bri Scalesse for the challenge, thought about what a wheelchair user may need from clothes in terms of functionality and form. And fundamentally, disabled people deserve that same right and experience,\u201d she explains. \u201cWhat we know from the research and the data is that disabled people have been underserved within the fashion market at every price point. There has been some really good progress in adaptive fashion at high street levels, in particular, but having one key piece is not good enough for disabled people \u2014 they need to get dressed everyday and go into the office.\u201d Burke points out that, historically, there\u2019s been a lack of trust between the disabled community and fashion industry because the former party has been routinely let down.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>An untapped demographic<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to the thesis, the disabled community counts for $2.6 trillion in disposable income across the US, Canada, the UK and the EU, with a population of 1.3 billion that\u2019s globally growing. Adaptive fashion accounts for $400 billion in the US alone, and there\u2019s potential for expanding that market through design.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat disabled people find with the adaptive options that are available is that there is a lack of consideration around the aesthetic. There is a lack of variety in terms of pattern, style, color palette and fabrications,\u201d says Burke. \u201cDisabled people want a choice in what they want to wear. Burke hopes that the Tilting the Lens\u2019s report will help broaden the perception and imaging of the disabled community.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Educating the future<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Tilting the Lens wants to cement the conversations it had with past collaborators such as Farfetch, Ralph Lauren, Netflix, Pinterest and Unilever in order to give brands a springboard for continuing to cater to the disabled community. \u201cWe have been really clear that education is part of our mission, but also part of our practice,\u201d says Burke.<\/p>\n<p>Before venturing into the CFDA\/<em>Vogue<\/em> Fashion Fund\u2019s challenge earlier this year, Tilting the Lens hosted several workshops on co-design for the contributing designers to ensure there was a baseline knowledge and understanding of the processes and frameworks of adaptive fashion.<\/p>\n<p>Burke\u2019s consultancy has been partnering with New York\u2019s Parsons School of Design for the last three years working with its fashion students. \u201cWe hope that that creates a pipeline of talent in the fashion industry, both in the US and further afield, but this cannot become an exception.
