It\u2019s the kind of queer media its protagonist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/coreyfogelmanis\/\">Corey Fogelmanis<\/a> \u2013 who plays non-binary teen Ben DeBacker \u2013 didn\u2019t grow up with. \u201cI think I looked for it,\u201d he says, \u201cbut it wasn\u2019t always something that was super readily available.\u201d At 26, just ahead of his press run, he\u2019s witnessing a long-overdue swell of queer storytelling finally taking shape \u2013 and this time, he\u2019s at the centre of one of those stories.<\/p>\n<p><span>Based on Mason Deaver\u2019s acclaimed novel, <\/span><em><span>I Wish You All the Best<\/span><\/em><span> follows Ben as they navigate the fallout of coming out as non-binary to unsupportive parents and move in with their older, estranged sister. The debut feature from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tommy.dorfman\/\">Tommy Dorfman<\/a> avoids the archetypal queer melodrama, opting instead for a gentler, more expansive view of Ben\u2019s world. Even with its heavier moments, the film is balanced with irreverent Gen Z humor. With lines like \u201cIs it giving they\/them?\u201d, nods to King Princess, and jabs at Noah Centineo, it lands on a humour that\u2019s hard to get right.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"QXwxIk0am8c\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QXwxIk0am8c\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Fogelmanis first came across the story years before he was cast, when Dorfman shared it on Instagram in 2019. \u201cI saw the cover and thought it was so beautiful \u2013 these two kids, this sense of safety with each other \u2013 it just spoke to me.\u201d He bought the book, but it sat on his shelf, until the audition came years later. \u201cI picked it up and dove right in. It felt like it fit like a glove,\u201d he recalls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On set, he found that relating to Ben\u2019s character came easily, in part because of Dorfman\u2019s writing and direction. \u201cTommy would write scenes as we were filming, and she would say things in a way that were so familiar to me \u2013 like I\u2019d had the thought before, or I\u2019d said it before,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt was really exciting, because I had a clear idea of what it meant to me, which isn\u2019t always the case. It was like living my life in a new way, exploring problems I hadn\u2019t really examined before.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"d9d08578-18d9-48cf-bc2b-b3a000f2531f\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/1\/1431468.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.87\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IWYATB_SG_00929R\" class=\"img\" height=\"1605\" src=\"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1431468.jpg\" width=\"3000\" title=\"1431468\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Lionsgate<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>The story is ultimately uplifting: Ben has already grappled with their identity, so at its core it\u2019s a story about the people around them and how they interact with Ben. \u201cI think a really big reason for Ben making it out the way they do is because of the people in their life that show up for them and hold them when they need it most,\u201d Fogelmanis says \u2013 the most formative being their on-screen love interest Nathan, played by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/milesgutierrezriley\/\"><span>Miles Gutierrez-Riley<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another figure in Ben\u2019s support system is Ms Lyons, the art teacher, played by Lena Dunham. We watch Ben find refuge in the art room, where Ms Lyons offers guidance and support. It\u2019s a familiar archetype in queer coming-of-age stories, one that resonates with many \u2013 including the actor himself. \u201cWhen I was doing that sitcom as a kid and through high school, I had the same teacher for all my years of high school. He\u2019s still in my life \u2013 he had such a big part in my development as a student and as a person, and I\u2019m incredibly grateful for him,\u201d he says. \u201cYou don\u2019t always get to choose who you have access to, so I feel lucky I had this person. And Ben has Ms Lyons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The rarity of stories like Ben\u2019s isn\u2019t lost on Fogelmanis. \u201cBen starts the story in a really scary place, and I think there\u2019s a lot of different versions of this story that maybe don\u2019t end up so hopeful,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s a wonderful reminder of the power of community, of giving love and receiving love. I\u2019m so excited for this story to be out there, and I don\u2019t want to be too prescriptive, but for it to hopefully be a beacon of light.\u201d For viewers who\u2019ve been waiting to see themselves reflected on screen, it\u2019s set to be just that.<\/p>\n<p>I Wish You All the Best <em>is out now.
