If retreating into isolation in Los Angeles for the best part of three years and writing (and rewriting) lyrics in 13 different languages doesn\u2019t sound like impossibly hard work, then I don\u2019t know what does. No stranger to Herculean efforts, though, Rosal\u00eda persevered; <\/span><em><span>LUX <\/span><\/em><span>has seen the light of day, complete with features from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/bjork\">Bj\u00f6rk<\/a> and the London Symphony Orchestra. However, the true challenge \u2013<\/span> the real metaphorical boulder <span>\u2013 <\/span>would be to get modern audiences on board and immerse themselves in 60 minutes of orchestral drama. After all, it is 2025: attention spans are fried and algorithm-friendly content is king.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSince digital platforms became the main cultural arbiters of our time, and the digital platforms are controlled by algorithms, the algorithm became the cultural arbiter,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/61986\/1\/go-viral-or-die-how-the-algorithm-took-over-filterworld-kyle-chayka\">Kyle Chayka<\/a> of <\/span><em><span>The New Yorker <\/span><\/em><span>and author of <\/span><em><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterstones.com\/book\/filterworld\/kyle-chayka\/9781788708548\">Filterworld: How Algorithms Flattened Culture<\/a>. <\/span><\/em><span>\u201cThey push one type of content, and so artists have to pursue that style in order to gain and maintain an audience.\u201d The result is a world of charmless cultural goods, where every song hinges on the same hooks and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2025\/jan\/17\/not-second-screen-enough-is-netflix-deliberately-dumbing-down-tv-so-people-can-watch-while-scrolling\"><span>TV shows are getting dumber<\/span><\/a><span> to facilitate second-screen viewing. Andy Warhol famously prophesied that in the future, everyone would be famous for 15 minutes \u2013 today, in the algorithmic age, 15 <em>seconds<\/em> is the dream.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>All of which makes <\/span><em><span>LUX <\/span><\/em><span>weird. It is not optimised for a world that favours the easily digestible, shareable, and forgettable. But that is exactly what Rosal\u00eda wanted. Appearing on <\/span><em><span>The New York Times <\/span><\/em><span>\u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/30\/arts\/music\/rosalia-lux-interview.html\"><span>Popcast\u2019<\/span><\/a><span>, she was asked if she is demanding too much of her audience. \u201cAbsolutely, I am,\u201d she responded. \u201cThe more we are in the era of dopamine, the more I want the opposite.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"htQBS2Ikz6c\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/htQBS2Ikz6c\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>It appears she isn\u2019t alone in her mission. Three days after <\/span><em><span>LUX <\/span><\/em><span>was released<\/span><em><span>, <\/span><\/em><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/charli-xcx\">Charli xcx<\/a> dropped \u201cHouse\u201d, a tortured track which features The Velvet Underground\u2019s John Cale monologuing atop a screeching string arrangement. The song was written for Emerald Fennell\u2019s forthcoming adaptation of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/film-tv\/article\/66447\/1\/emerald-fennell-wuthering-heights-adaptation-terrible-margot-robbie-jacob-elordi\"><em><span>Wuthering Heights<\/span><\/em><\/a><em><span>, <\/span><\/em><span>with Charli writing on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/inbox\/post\/178712040\"><span>Substack<\/span><\/a> about how the opportunity to create music for the film encouraged her to do something different post-<em>Brat<\/em>.<span> \u201cThis world felt so opposite from the world I had been inhabiting for the past two and a half years. I began to feel a sense of freedom again,\u201d she wrote. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/music\/article\/68402\/1\/willoughby-tucker-lore-ethel-cain-new-album-janie-holly-reddick-story-2025\"><span>Ethel Cain<\/span><\/a><span>, with her Southern Gothic worldbuilding in both <\/span><em><span>Preacher\u2019s Daughter <\/span><\/em><span>and <\/span><em><span>Willoughby Tucker, I\u2019ll Always Love You, <\/span><\/em><span>as well as 2025\u2019s surprise ambient drone project <em>Perverts<\/em>, h<\/span>as also long been <span>crafting a cerebral antidote to the internet\u2019s run-of-the-mill sad girl pop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Simply put, artists are looking to resist the algorithm, crafting sonically complex, deeply human works to challenge their audiences. And i<\/span><span>nterestingly, the audience response has been overwhelmingly positive. \u201cPop music is sooooo weird rn, I love it\u201d, read one viral <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/isid__or\/status\/1987935239008628959?s=46\"><span>post on X<\/span><\/a><span>. <\/span><span>Discussing <\/span><em><span>LUX <\/span><\/em><span>on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DQ_yOGODWqG\/?hl=en\"><span>podcast<\/span><\/a><span> with Nick Grimshaw, DJ Annie Mac said people had been requesting the album\u2019s operatic lead single \u201cBerghain\u201d in the club. <\/span><span>\u201cIt\u2019s changed everything,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@nickgrimshaw\/video\/7570039180768644374\">Grimshaw said<\/a>. The album has even broken <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/rosalias-lux-breaks-spotify-record-for-most-streamed-album-in-a-single-day-by-a-spanish-speaking-female-artist\/\"><span>Spotify\u2019s record<\/span><\/a><span> for the most-streamed album in a single day by a Spanish-speaking female artist. <\/span><span>\u201cWe\u2019ve gotten too used to fast-food music and fast-food art,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/classicallyclare\/?hl=en\">Clare Yeo<\/a>, a writer and content creator. \u201cBut this&#8230; this is a feast.\u201d Audiences are proving that they, too, are ready for more than just dopamine bait hooks; just as artists want to challenge them, they want to be challenged.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But why? \u201cIn the era of the long 2010s, we reached and passed peak social media, coming to understand and get bored of the flattening of culture,\u201d says Chayka. \u201cNow, we are looking for something that speaks to us differently. What [Rosal\u00eda] chose to make is so individual and self-expressive, and so not optimised that it comes across as this great artistic act. Now, we are looking for something that speaks to us differently<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>\u2018Professional music fan\u2019, DJ and radio host <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/gee_derrick\/?hl=en\">Derrick Gee<\/a> points to fatigue with AI-generated content as another reason why audiences are hankering for <em>real<\/em> art again. \u201cYou think you know when you\u2019re listening to AI, but you really don\u2019t. To have someone so clearly going \u2018I want to be as human as possible\u2019, it\u2019s like hell yeah! We should fight back and make it very apparent that we\u2019re going to be as real as can be,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s a fight for what music arguably is for \u2013 expression and humanity. Are we ready for it [art to challenge us again]? I think it\u2019s a choice. We have to choose to be ready for it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And audiences <em>are<\/em> starting to make that choice, initiating their own acts of resistance. From \u2018rawdogging boredom\u2019, an internet trend where people sit for extended periods of time with no distractions in an attempt to improve their attention spans and reconnect with their imaginations, to constructing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@classicallyclare\/video\/7544945201916251413?q=personal%20curriculum&amp;t=1763655530096\">\u2018personal curriculums\u2019<\/a> comprising classic literature and cult cinema, growing numbers of people are evidently seeking out art that demands <em>more<\/em>. \u201cWe\u2019re finally understanding what this digital fatigue we\u2019re feeling is,\u201d says Yeo, who regularly posts breakdowns of her own personal curriculum on TikTok. \u201cIt\u2019s us not using our brains and being challenged enough. It\u2019s like someone took the blinders off. The [idea of a] personal curriculum is an opportunity to explore those things that we otherwise would not have. It\u2019s a small thing to reclaim [art] for ourselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>All of this hints at a broader cultural recalibration that goes beyond the flickering of a few pyrotechnical pop releases. On all sides, for artists and audiences alike, there is not just a willingness to engage in art that defies the algorithm, but a real hunger for it. Whether that hunger can withstand the force of the algorithm \u2013 and AI \u2013 remains to be seen, but for the first time in a long time, the desire for depth feels stronger than the impulse to
