But just as we thought single-use MP3 players were made redundant, music fans began <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/thefilter\/2025\/sep\/12\/best-mp3-players-uk\"><span>hailing their resurrection<\/span><\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIn the past few years, since Covid, we\u2019ve seen way more people looking to get a new MP3 player,\u201d Chris Laidler, office manager of Advanced MP3 Players, an Edinburgh store specialising in audio equipment,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/thefilter\/2025\/sep\/12\/best-mp3-players-uk\"><span>recently told <\/span><em><span>The Guardian<\/span><\/em><\/a><span>. This resurgence is, in part, aesthetics-driven: wired headphones and click wheels have a novel tactility in today\u2019s screen-based world, meaning they\u2019ve been picked up and popularised as part of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/discover\/mp3-player\"><span>Y2K revival<\/span><\/a><span>. But this reasoning barely scratches the surface for their comeback. The real value lies in their limitations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-tiktok\" data-id=\"7525250087149374776\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Modern music streaming is designed for endless background listening, trapped inside a device optimised to distract and seize your attention at every turn. But, after a decade of unrelenting progress and tech integration, people are acutely aware of their screen-based vices and looking for ways to digitally detox. One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stokesentinel.co.uk\/news\/uk-world-news\/digital-detox-smartphones-britain-tendendo-10338250\">2025 survey of 2,000 UK adults<\/a> found 41 per cent believe they look at their phones \u201ctoo much\u201d, while 35 per cent are actively trying to cut down or eliminate their screentime altogether. In this context, MP3 players \u2013 or digital audio players (DAPs), as they\u2019re more accurately known \u2013 are being leveraged as a tool for digital deceleration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI really dislike spending time on my phone in a non-intentional way,\u201d says 28-year-old Jozef, who uses a Sony Walkman. \u201cGetting a cheap DAP was a conscious move to reclaim that time, whether for listening to music undisturbed or being offline altogether.\u201d As dedicated devices, they demand focused listening, turning music back into a mindful act, free from the constant barrage of notifications.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u201cIt\u2019s cynical but I\u2019m aware I\u2019m essentially attention real estate, and the methods for gaining and maintaining your attention have become a lot more sophisticated in recent years,\u201d he adds. \u201cSo from my perspective, relying on willpower and Airplane Mode alone is a losing battle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Technology expert and behavioural psychologist Bob Hutchins seconds this perspective. \u201cStreaming services augmented availability and convenience, but taken to an extreme, they reversed into something oppressive and dehumanising \u2013 algorithmic control, phantom ownership, involuntary distraction,\u201d he says. \u201cThe MP3 player is a retrieval process, a recovery of what the streaming platform age erased: intentional listening and bounded attention.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>I don\u2019t think it\u2019s a coincidence that people are romanticising the past at a time when those shaping the future of tech are intent on selling a vision where effort becomes optional and so much of what brings us joy is outsourced to AI<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>In another sense, adopting a dedicated DAP is being seen as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/DigitalAudioPlayer\/comments\/1oreht9\/cancelled_my_shitty_ass_streaming_subscription\/\">something of a rebellion<\/a>. \u201cI stopped using Spotify earlier this year as a result of Daniel Ek\u2019s investments in AI war technology,\u201d says Emma, 25, a long-term iPod user and music journalist. \u201cThe way they pay artists is incredibly poor and has made it even harder to make a sustainable living as a musician. [Using an iPod is a] conscious choice to support artists I really care about in a way that\u2019s cheaper than vinyl and also portable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Streaming has failed to provide a sense of personal agency or ownership. Many young music fans are looking to grow a real, tangible archive. In this way, building a digital music library is an act of identity creation. \u201cCurating a library takes time and effort; it requires intention,\u201d says Hutchins. \u201cBut it also means you own something tangible. That means something to a generation that grew up seeing their entire cultural environment be at the mercy of platform decisions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Hunting down tracks and manually curating. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/music\/article\/68810\/1\/has-the-algorithm-killed-music-discovery-social-media-echo-chamber\">That effort is the new social currency<\/a>. It proves you\u2019re a true fan with values, not just a passive consumer. People don\u2019t want to simply lease their culture from tech giants that are increasingly seen as unethical, they want to own and curate it themselves \u2013 it\u2019s a way of forming stronger connections to the music you love. \u201cI was getting quite fed up of getting lost in remembering and knowing what I was listening to,\u201d says Willem, 25, a \u201cweird\u201d phone collector, iPod user and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dia-phones.com\/\">technologist<\/a>. \u201cDiscovery features are just so busy and noisy. It doesn\u2019t even matter if it\u2019s good music that I found through that functionality, it\u2019s just gonna get lost.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html-embed\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>The return to DAPs doesn\u2019t have to mean dusting off your old 1GB Sony Walkman (basically a memory stick with bells and whistles). A cottage industry has sprung up, with online stores like <a href=\"https:\/\/player-mods.com\/?srsltid=AfmBOooNgcqduiXJkYHsyHD2Wc_p4oNuWSJSgH3EE37az2YP0G0In58s\">PlayerMods<\/a> souping up iPod classics with modern batteries, USB-C charging and up to 2TB of storage. At the same time, audiophile brands like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiio.com\/\">FiiO<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/activostyle.co.uk\/?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=23088392840&amp;gbraid=0AAAAA-8IGCA3JFQ6WPYfXHI-SUTDI8110&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQiA5uDIBhDAARIsAOxj0CHGkx7C5PW5tfjk5Hv9FVcW5i-Iy4FD502PETsVfD84xv0AbJq0tAYaAvwIEALw_wcB\">Activo<\/a> are producing high-end, single-purpose DAPs that provide superior sound quality and a novel listening experience. In all of these cases, the medium serves the music \u2013 not the other way around.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This revival isn\u2019t happening in a vacuum; it\u2019s one part of a much larger generational pushback. \u201cThe use of MP3s is just one example of the way that Gen Zers are experimenting with tangible media, from digital cameras to film,\u201d says Lottie Hanwell, a cultural insights researcher. \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s a coincidence that people are romanticising the past at a time when those shaping the future of tech are intent on selling a vision where effort becomes optional and so much of what brings us joy is outsourced to AI.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So, rather than a retro gimmick, the resurgence of single-use DAPs can be seen as a generational search for agency and connection. \u201cUsing an iPod really feels like a step forward,\u201d says Willem. \u201c<\/span><span>Even though it\u2018s an older technology, they\u2019re tools through which we can feel more grounded and find more community.\u201d So, <\/span><span>for young music fans raised with smartphones and seamless tech at their fingertips, choosing a single-purpose device isn\u2019t just nostalgia.
