It started off in the face, as the technology behind surgical procedures hit new advancements, and now it\u2019s migrated down to the rest of the body. \u201cPOV: my doctor gave me the best BBL because you wouldn\u2019t have known if I didn\u2019t tell you,\u201d one user writes on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/t\/ZP8DVcRmk\/\"><span>TikTok<\/span><\/a><span>. The post, tagged with #skinnybbl, is part of a growing trend where people are forgoing big, bouncy BBLs in favour of barely there sculpting designed to appear \u2018natural\u2019. In October, Kylie Jenner\u2019s best friend, Stassie Karanikolaou, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@stassiebaby\/video\/7558546290427055390?is_from_webapp=1\"><span>documented<\/span><\/a><span> her BBL reduction after having expressed regret over the procedure. \u201cEveryone is getting the diaper removed,\u201d one comment with 25K likes joked on her post.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The skinny BBL is the quiet luxury of cosmetic surgery, less about volume and more about being a seamless lift that\u2019s invisible. \u201cFrom what I\u2019ve seen, this ass looks nice, lifted and smaller,\u201d Karanikolaou reported after her reduction operation. It\u2019s also a signpost of a broader moment in which algorithms, politics, gender ideals and our collective obsession with \u2018effortless\u2019 optimisation are rewriting beauty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After moving to Miami in 2024, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@228shay?_r=1&amp;_t=ZP-91O92ihS5Rm\"><span>Shay<\/span><\/a><span>, 25, thought about getting a BBL constantly. \u201cI\u2019d go back and forth with myself,\u201d she says. \u201cThe thought of it going out of style and people telling me not to do it\u2026 I thought, maybe they\u2019re right. I tried going to the gym and working out, but eventually I decided to take the easy way out.\u201d Shay previously underwent a rhinoplasty and a breast augmentation while living in Arizona in 2023, but \u201cthose were minor upgrades\u201d. Miami, a renowned plastic surgery destination, played a role in her decision, in addition to her \u201ctoxic\u201d Instagram feed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI feel like Miami has influenced me to just better myself. Everything I\u2019ve done cosmetically is to upgrade myself. My nose wasn\u2019t drastic, my boobs were. [With] my skinny BBL, I did the most minimalist fat transfer. I didn\u2019t think my hips and butt needed to be drastic. I like to be able to dress myself up and dress myself down.\u201d Despite agonising over her decision, Shay didn\u2019t tell anyone she had gotten a skinny BBL until three days after the procedure. \u201cI think it looks natural enough that people would never guess. But then that\u2019s the worst thing too because I want people to know,\u201d she laughs. Shay describes these contradictory feelings as a \u201cdevil and angel fighting\u201d on her shoulders.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-tiktok\" data-id=\"7558546290427055390\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drjacobson.com\/\"><span>Dr Joshua Jacobson<\/span><\/a><span>, a Beverly Hills-based board-certified plastic surgeon, has seen this play out on his operating table. \u201cEveryone who comes in says they don\u2019t want to look exaggerated, they don\u2019t want to look fake. People don\u2019t want anyone to know that they\u2019ve had anything done; they just want to look better,\u201d he says, adding that Karanikolaou\u2019s surgery has been a catalyst for more people coming in to reduce theirs. \u201cIt\u2019s become a lot more common.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Beauty critic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jessicadefino_\/?hl=en\"><span>Jessica DeFino<\/span><\/a><span> describes the tension between getting procedures and wanting to go unnoticed as a central contradiction. \u201cThe market tells us the body must be optimised, so it\u2019s almost irrelevant if we think other people notice because it\u2019s so deeply internalised. But if we conform to the beauty standard, we don\u2019t focus enough on what we lose existentially. The tangible resources we funnel into the project of algorithmic beauty \u2013 our time, money, energy, headspace \u2013 are finite. These are resources we use to build our lives, and if we\u2019re using them to build our bodies, there\u2019s a cost in life fulfilment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The BBL was and remains a defining symbol of 2010s beauty. The KarJenners played a pivotal role in cementing this standard; an amalgamation of features often associated with Black women and people of colour. Candy-coloured lace front wigs, lips plumped with Juvederm, and the cherry on top being an hourglass figure, emphasised by a large, cosmetically enhanced derriere. This body type led to the normalisation of cosmetic surgery for both celebrities and civilians, simultaneously creating pressure to undergo procedures and (briefly) momentum in the body positivity movement as curvier bodies graced runways and the covers of magazines.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-tiktok\" data-id=\"7513059587595996458\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Then, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/beauty\/article\/66958\/1\/beauty-backslide-how-the-pendulum-swung-back-to-thinness-and-conservatism\"><span>the vibe shifted and it all changed<\/span><\/a><span>. Kim Kardashian drastically lost 16lb to fit into Marilyn Monroe\u2019s dress for the 2022 Met Gala, the KarJenners reduced their BBLs, Ozempic took over, the clean girl aesthetic gained popularity, certain people <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/beauty\/article\/66383\/1\/are-the-tides-really-turning-against-tattoos\"><span>turned against tattoos<\/span><\/a><span>, and there was a resurgence of ultra-thin ideals, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/beauty\/article\/65234\/1\/shift-beauty-standards-trump-win-president-utah-curls-nara-smith\"><span>conservative aesthetics<\/span><\/a><span> and regressive socio-political attitudes shaping our bodies. The result is a more \u2018natural\u2019, undetectable beauty becoming more desirable. (Although of course, none of it is actually natural. \u201cWhat we consider the height of feminine beauty today would not be possible without cosmetic technology,\u201d as DeFino says.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s all connected: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/beauty\/article\/65341\/1\/the-year-of-maxxing-how-self-optimisation-obsession-came-to-a-peak-in-2024\"><span>looksmaxxing<\/span><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/beauty\/article\/64559\/1\/undetectable-era-beauty-plastic-cosmetic-surgery-christina-aguilera-xtina-age\"><span>undetectable face procedures<\/span><\/a><span>, people wanting more natural-looking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/beauty\/article\/64884\/1\/turkey-teeth-have-veneers-lost-their-shine\"><span>veneers<\/span><\/a><span>, the shift to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/beauty\/article\/66958\/1\/beauty-backslide-how-the-pendulum-swung-back-to-thinness-and-conservatism\"><span>skinny conservative trends<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cWhat\u2019s happening right now, particularly after the second election of President Donald Trump, is a big anti-woke movement,\u201d DeFino says. \u201cThis ends up being anti-Black, anti-working class and anti-disabled people, all of which feed into beauty standards as physical manifestations of systemic oppression.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Conservative politics focus on traditional and biological femininity, \u201cwhich I would say is typically associated with effortlessness,\u201d DeFino continues. \u201cI think it\u2019s very telling that the undetectable era is coming at a time where politically and socially we\u2019re seeing a strong emphasis on the glorification of cisgender women and the demonisation of trans people. That is part of why it\u2019s desirable to have your work look undetectable \u2013 it\u2019s because it&#8217;s a performance of biological womanhood.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The coronation of the skinny BBL is a sign that we\u2019ve officially moved into a new era of beauty, one that tows the line between algorithmic compliance, gender performance, and a glorification of whiteness. \u201cThe skinny BBL is about editing the body to fit the dominant visual grammar of the moment,\u201d as trend forecaster<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lizzyabowring\/?hl=en\"><span> Lizzy Bowring<\/span><\/a><span> puts it. \u201cThe body is shaped not only for in-person perception, but also for how it will be read, compressed, and circulated as an image.\u201d The tragedy isn\u2019t just that artificial beauty is being repackaged as authenticity. It\u2019s that people are being told to be quieter, subtler, and to slowly erase themselves. Ultimately, the more we perfect our image, the less of ourselves remains.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<footer class=\"article-footer\">\n<div class=\"wrapper\">\n<div
