In August this year, when she was still 25, she went viral on TikTok for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@curatedbycoco___\/video\/7534082564827401486\"><span>\u201clooking old\u201d<\/span><\/a><span>. Only Pons never asked the internet to comment on her supposed age. She didn\u2019t use any of the age-guessing filters or take part in any of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/discover\/how-old-do-i-look-tiktok\"><span>\u201chow old do I look?\u201d trends<\/span><\/a><span>. She simply posted a fun, transitional video of her mum and her getting ready for her cousin\u2019s wedding in Raleigh, North Carolina. \u201cThe hotel lighting was obviously pretty harsh, and I am like naturally like a freckly, fair-skinned person,\u201d she says. \u201cI couldn\u2019t even remember what I posted, but I woke up the next morning to thousands of comments and all these views.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Pons\u2019 video with her mum now has over eight million views and nearly three thousand comments, with many calling the young woman \u201cretired\u201d and telling her to wear sunscreen. She\u2019s also not the only young person to go viral for apparent visible ageing. Other 25-year-old women like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@taylordonoghuee\"><span>Taylor Donoghuee<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@harrishikers\/video\/7561220332783144247\"><span>Conley Thompson<\/span><\/a><span> have received attention for appearing older, dressing older or not protecting their skin from sun damage. Last year, Gen Z as an entire age group were deemed to be ageing \u201clike milk\u201d, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/beauty\/article\/61834\/1\/is-gen-z-really-ageing-faster-kylie-jenner-social-media-retinol\"><span>according to the internet<\/span><\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>First, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/beauty\/article\/61908\/1\/filler-botox-gen-z-cosmetic-tweakments-now-being-deemed-aging\"><span>it was about cosmetic tweakments<\/span><\/a><span>: influencers and Love Island contestants in their early 20s <\/span><em><span>must<\/span><\/em><span> be looking older because of filler and Botox. Then, the internet came for any young woman who dared to ask their age or open the door to comments by declaring themselves \u201cyouthful looking\u201d. Today, any person or video is fair game, and looking older than you are as a 20-something-year-old woman is a crime punishable by a mix of online bullying and unsolicited skincare advice.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-tiktok\" data-id=\"7534082564827401486\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>It\u2019s a lesson Pons learnt the hard way. \u201cPeople won\u2019t stop, and I still get comments,\u201d she says. \u201cAt first, it made me feel insecure and upset, questioning if I really looked old, but then I got over it.\u201d As a young person who hasn\u2019t had any work done, Pons said the comments did leave her considering cosmetic treatments. This seed was eagerly and happily planted by those bombarding her with constant unsolicited recommendations on how to change her eyebrows, what skin regimen she should be on and why to stay out of the sun. Some people even asked her what skincare products she used, to know what ones to stay away from. \u201cI was scared to post another video and had to distract myself with friends and family who would tell me there\u2019s nothing wrong with my face, and I don\u2019t need to get any work done,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Calling 20-something-year-olds \u201cold\u201d generally exists only as an extremely online experience. The same people telling others to start retinoids likely (and hopefully) don\u2019t stop people on the street to tell them they aren\u2019t ageing \u201cwell\u201d. But the comments do reflect how we\u2019ve long thought and talked about women ageing in general \u2013 and how warped our perception of what people look like has become. While mother-daughter duos who look \u201cyoung\u201d together are praised for their genetics and dedication to the highly regimented and expensive beauty-industrial complex, others that fall short are positioned as warnings of how not to exist, grow and move through time. The repulsion of the ageing woman has existed throughout modern history. It\u2019s what sells anti-ageing creams and syringes of Botox. If you can age out of patriarchal womanhood <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@starsofeternalyouth\/video\/7552602221850987798\"><span>and be deemed a \u201cthing\u201d<\/span><\/a><span> to be fixed or bullied into submission, instead of a person, in your 20s, anti-ageing also becomes a pursuit for the young. Then, we wonder why young people are getting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/beauty\/article\/65926\/1\/is-there-ever-such-thing-as-a-preventative-facelift-twenties-ageing\"><span>preventative facelifts<\/span><\/a><span>, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DQsDKBxklvU\/?hl=en\"><span>Shay Mitchell has brought out a skincare line for kids<\/span><\/a><span>. Even when people discuss ageing in a positive light, it\u2019s usually to praise those \u201cageing gracefully\u201d, as if it carries some moral value. The reality is that <\/span>we don\u2019t owe the world or each other the appearance of graceful ageing.<\/p>\n<p><span>To unpack how people became so comfortable with bullying 25-year-olds for looking \u201colder\u201d online, we need to understand ageism in society at large. Ashton Applewhite, author of<a href=\"https:\/\/thischairrocks.com\/\"><em>This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism<\/em><\/a>, says that how we think about ageing is intertwined with class. \u201cThe longer we live, the more different from one another we become,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019re shaped by things like our access to good food, whether we can afford to stay indoors, and, you know, stress gives you wrinkles.\u201d Anti-ageing products or services are often marketed as a \u201cfix\u201d \u2013 the industry runs on a cycle of invented \u201cproblems\u201d and perceived, expensive \u201csolutions\u201d. \u201cThese are interventions that only wealthy women can afford,\u201d says Applewhite. \u201cNo one makes money off satisfaction.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-tiktok\" data-id=\"7560424480888098080\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Ageism has never had its true pop culture reckoning. It\u2019s a largely un-sexy topic that\u2019s hard to broach without someone simply calling you \u201cold\u201d (even by writing this, I\u2019m aware I\u2019m opening that door myself). But it <em>is<\/em> one of the last <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/2023\/03\/cover-new-concept-of-aging\"><span>socially acceptable prejudices<\/span><\/a><span>, and, because of how it intertwines with gender and class, it negatively impacts not only the psychological well-being of older adults, but also how we talk about young people\u2019s transition through adulthood. Musician<\/span>\u00a0Sombr recently used the term \u201c25-year-old\u201d <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/21\/entertainment\/sombr-tiktok-drama-concert-review\">as practically an insult<\/a>, when a fan complained about his show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWomen in the workforce are never the right age,\u201d says Applewhite. \u201cFirst, we\u2019re too sexy to be taken seriously, then we are too fertile and, then, women are punished for making the terrible error of ageing and you\u2019re not sexy or fertile anymore, so it\u2019s all over.\u201d It\u2019s true: while having children often leads to less pay for mothers, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/19thnews.org\/2023\/03\/parenthood-stereotypes-gender-pay-gap\/\"><span>fatherhood leads to an increase<\/span><\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The fear of the ageing woman is so deeply rooted in the beauty industry today that it\u2019s spewing out to an increasingly younger audience. It\u2019s projected onto those who attempt to fight the first visible signs of ageing, but also onto those who don\u2019t, and the<\/span><span> young women in the <\/span><span>comments of the videos. It\u2019s so widespread that Applewhite says it takes \u201coriginality, courage, humour and vision\u201d to resist falling into it. For 28-year-old <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@lakeishaleids\/video\/7560424480888098080\"><span>Lakeisha<\/span><\/a><span>, that vision looks like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@lakeishaleids\/video\/7560424480888098080\"><span>de-centring age entirely<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cI don\u2019t see it as a limit or a cage anymore because there\u2019s no guideline of how someone should look at a certain age,\u201d she says. \u201cI used to believe 25 would be the age where I would have everything figured out, but that wasn\u2019t the case, so I realised I\u2019m on my own path, my own timeline.\u201d After all, for those fortunate enough to grow old, being on the winning side of ageist culture has an inevitably short-lived
