If you\u2019ve still yet to fully recover from Saltburn<\/em>\u2019s bathtub scene, then it\u2019s perhaps best to look away now: Oscar-winning provocateur Emerald Fennell has set her sights on her next project, and her choice\u2014and casting\u2014has already been divisive.<\/p>\n

On July 12, 2024, the director took to X to share an illustration of a ghostly skeleton by artist Katie Buckley. At its heart sits the title Wuthering Heights<\/em>, and below it, the strapline \u201cA film by Emerald Fennell.\u201d Above the image, it reads, \u201cBe with me always. Take any form. Drive me mad,\u201d the immortal words Heathcliff utters after the tragic death of Catherine Earnshaw.<\/p>\n

Given that her last feature, and Promising Young Woman<\/em> before it, were both about obsession\u2014the former about one student\u2019s infatuation with another, and the latter about a woman\u2019s single-minded determination to avenge the death of her best friend\u2014the decision to adapt Emily Bront\u00eb\u2019s seminal tale of doomed love, as well as the accompanying tagline, makes perfect sense.<\/p>\n

However, it did leave us with a number of questions, too. Will this be a faithful period adaptation? How will it compare to the countless other big-screen renderings of this particular story, from Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon\u2019s 1939 version, to the 1992 film starring Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes, and Andrea Arnold\u2019s 2011 reimagining with Kaya Scodelario and James Howson?<\/p>\n

Would it be Barry Keoghan, I wondered, who\u2019d don a waistcoat and tousled mane to play our brooding Byronic hero? And who could possibly take the part of Cathy? Well, we now have answers: on September 23, 2024, it emerged that it was not the Irish Oscar nominee but\u2014staggeringly\u2014his Saltburn<\/em> co-star Jacob Elordi who\u2019d be delivering Heathcliff\u2019s impassioned monologues, while Margot Robbie would embody his tormented paramour. The latter will also be producing through her company, LuckyChap, after having backed Fennell\u2019s last two films, too.<\/p>\n

More news followed on November 20: Alison Oliver, Elordi\u2019s onscreen sister in Saltburn<\/em>, will be his onscreen wife, Isabella Linton, this time; Shazad Latif, who starred opposite Lily James in the rom-com What\u2019s Love Got to Do with It?<\/em>, will portray Isabella\u2019s brother and Cathy\u2019s husband, Edgar; and Oscar nominee Hong Chau (Downsizing<\/em>, The Whale<\/em>) has taken the part of one of the film\u2019s narrators, Nelly Dean.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Fennell is writing and producing, as well as directing. As for its release date? Look out for it in theaters on Valentine\u2019s Day, 2026.<\/p>\n

To that end, a first look was released on Valentine\u2019s Day, 2025 and\u2026 well, I have no words.<\/p>\n

Then, on March 23, came the first photos from the set\u2014and they show Robbie in a giant, off-the-shoulder wedding dress and veil, carrying a bouquet and drifting through the moors.<\/p>\n

More images followed on April 13, this time showing a funeral scene for which Robbie wears another off-the-shoulder number, a giant gold cross and black veil, and Elordi, in his scraggly sideburns, flashes a gold tooth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

And then came the first official teaser (and official poster) on September 3\u2014along with the announcement that the film will feature original songs by Charli XCX.<\/p>\n

Now, on November 13, just a few months ahead of the film\u2019s release, we\u2019ve been given a second and equally dramatic trailer. This one shows Elordi running about in his full Heathcliff getup alongside Robbie\u2019s Catherine in\u2014gasp<\/em>\u2014what looks like a red latex dress?! The English students will be having a field day. We also get to hear a sneak listen of a new Charli XCX track, \u201cChains of Love,\u201d from her upcoming Wuthering Heights<\/em> album. Watch the new, incredibly yearnful trailer\u2014and see all the new stills\u2014below.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
