At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/dilara-findikoglu\">Dilara Findikoglu<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/gallery\/35943\/0\/di-petsa-ss26\">Di Petsa<\/a>, models walked with mud-smeared faces and chests; at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/charlie-constantinou\">Charlie Constantinou<\/a>, they had dirt streaked down their faces; and at Lueder, models dragged clumps of soil across a dining table in their upturned, spiked shoes. It\u2019s a material that\u2019s been resurfacing for a few years now, splashing the legs of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/57100\/1\/kanye-balenciaga-runway-paris-fashion-week-mud-demna-gvasalia-catwalk\">Balenciaga\u2019s SS23 <\/a>models as they waded through a peat bog, and coating the bodies of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/59561\/1\/elena-velez-working-class-midwest-new-york-designer-eartheater-rosalia\">Elena Velez<\/a>\u2019s SS23 cast as they thrashed around in her mud pit show. But this season, the dirt has kicked its way up to faces, as our relationships to grime, the world around us, and authenticity continue to shift.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Part of dirt\u2019s new appeal lies in its distance from our current reality. It belongs to a broader turn toward fantasy and escapism that\u2019s defined both the runway and the wider zeitgeist in recent years. Charlie Constantinou\u2019s collections have drawn on mythic and historical worlds; Lueder\u2019s on medieval silhouettes and \u201cmental armour.\u201d Beyond fashion, the same impulse surfaces in <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/beauty\/article\/68316\/1\/how-neo-medievalist-tattoos-became-a-ruling-aesthetic-middle-ages-gothic-dark\">neo-medieval tattooing<\/a><\/span> and <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/music\/article\/49595\/1\/bardcore-is-the-medieval-music-trend-taking-over-youtube-lady-gaga-radiohead\">bardcore music<\/a><\/span> \u2014 aesthetics reaching back to pre-digital eras that now feel aspirational precisely because they\u2019re so far removed from the present. As with all collective desires, that longing inevitably takes shape through the aesthetics we gravitate towards.<\/p>\n<p><span>In the product world, beauty is embracing a grimier aesthetic. Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/blendbunnycosmetics.com\/collections\/mei-pang-x-blend-bunny-rotten-collection\">Blend Bunny x Mei Peng<\/a> released the <\/span><em><span>Rotten Palette<\/span><\/em><span>, inspired by mould spores with shades like Stain, Spora and Mildew; meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DCuAUSpzg9V\/?hl=en-gb\">Huda Beauty\u2019s <\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DCuAUSpzg9V\/?hl=en-gb\"><em><span>Face Gloss <\/span><\/em><\/a><span>mimics mould spreading in a petri dish. These are part of a wider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/beauty\/article\/62604\/1\/why-are-we-all-obsessed-beauty-grossness-aesthetic\">fascination with decay<\/a>, also seen in the rise of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/beauty\/article\/61508\/1\/grotesque-the-rise-of-purposefully-disgusting-nail-art\">grotesque nails<\/a> and other looks that draw from the detritus of the world around us. The emergence of this grime within the fashion sphere is something heavily explored within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barbican.org.uk\/whats-on\/2025\/event\/dirty-looks\">Barbican&#8217;s Dirty Looks<\/a> exhibition.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>This aestheticisation of grime functions as a kind of resistance, challenging the gleaming perfection long upheld in mainstream beauty. It\u2019s the same impulse behind the mud-streaked faces at Dilara Findikoglu\u2019s runway show, which explored \u201cthe expectations of purity and lightness that women have for too long been confined by.\u201d It also speaks to a broader embrace of unruly beauty: from \u201cmessy girl\u201d to \u201cgoblin mode,\u201d a now-exhausted carousel of aesthetics that celebrate curated chaos. Greasy hair, chipped nails and smudged eyeliner become their calling cards. As an antithesis to the hyper-groomed ideals of \u201cclean-girl\u201d culture, these looks reject filters, pixel-perfect imagery and the sanitised aspirations of the online world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In their upcoming macrotrend The Great Beauty Blur, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefuturelaboratory.com\">The Future Laboratory<\/a> frames this resistance as a form of \u201canti-fluencing aesthetics,\u201d which Alice Crossley, senior foresight analyst at the consultancy, tells me is \u201ca way of thinking about beauty that\u2019s less about harmony or perfection and more about provocation, strangeness and visual interruption as a means of disrupting the homogenisation of appearance that we are currently experiencing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This presentation of dirt within beauty also acts as a marker of experience. Tutorials for the look often come with captions like \u201clook like you\u2019ve been too busy to do your make-up\u201d or \u201cout all night so my mascara\u2019s smudged.\u201d Dirtiness here becomes <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/beauty\/article\/58077\/1\/we-may-be-in-a-sex-recession-but-post-shag-make-up-trend\">a kind of proof of contact<\/a><\/span>. Yet rather than actually living through the moments that make us dirty, we\u2019re simulating them \u2013 perhaps because we\u2019re too burnt out, broke, anxious or absorbed in online life. In a sense, we\u2019ve aestheticised experience because we\u2019re starved of it.<\/p>\n<p>Dirt also connects us to the cycles of birth, death and fertility, grounding us in the earth in a way that screens, filters and pixel-perfect aesthetics never can. \u201cBeauty\u2019s embrace of dirt and decay speaks to a growing demand for grounding in fashion and beauty by reconnecting with aspects of the natural world,\u201d says Crossley. She points to examples like Nike\u2019s ISPA shoe, which mimics the sensation of walking barefoot through a forest, describing it as \u201cthe beauty industry\u2019s interpretation of this desire to be closer to nature and disconnected from technology.\u201d This attraction to dirt signals a wider cultural yearning to experience the world directly. But in an era when we\u2019re constantly told to \u201ctouch grass\u201d to offset the disorientation of digital life, even our dirt is curated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<footer
