In 2019, President Omar al-Bashir, who had ruled the North African country for 30 years, was ousted in a coup. This was followed by a power-sharing agreement between the official army, the civilian parties and the RSF (a paramilitary group), intended to be a transition to democracy. But the arrangement broke down in 2023, when tensions broke out between the two military factions and eventually erupted into a war on civilians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Since then, an estimated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cjel2nn22z9o\"><span>150,000<\/span><\/a><span> people have died, and around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unrefugees.org.uk\/learn-more\/news\/refugee-stories\/sudan-humanitarian-crisis\/\"><span>12 million have been <\/span><\/a><span>displaced. The UN has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/apr\/15\/sudan-in-worlds-largest-humanitarian-crisis-after-two-years-of-civil-war\"><span>described <\/span><\/a><span>the situation as the world\u2019s largest humanitarian crisis, and there is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/press-releases\/2025\/09\/war-atrocities-sudan-civilians-deliberately-targeted-un-fact-finding-mission\"><span>evidence <\/span><\/a><span>of war crimes committed by both sides. The RSF, in particular, has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/press-releases\/2025\/09\/war-atrocities-sudan-civilians-deliberately-targeted-un-fact-finding-mission\"><span>accused <\/span><\/a><span>of a long list of atrocities, including rape, sexual violence, torture and enslavement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>An already desperate situation was made even worse over the weekend, when RSF forces managed to capture Al Fashar \u2013 a city in the Darfur region \u2013 after laying siege to it for 18 months. There were immediate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2025\/10\/1166237\"><span>reports <\/span><\/a><span>of mass killings, summary executions and forced displacements, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/nov\/01\/sudan-massacre-rsf-rampage-el-fasher\"><span>experts <\/span><\/a><span>comparing the situation to the early days of the Rwandan genocide. Human rights organisations (along with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/breaking-news\/2025\/01\/08\/us-state-department-determines-genocide-sudan\"><span>US government<\/span><\/a><span>) had already accused the RSF of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/report\/2024\/05\/09\/massalit-will-not-come-home\/ethnic-cleansing-and-crimes-against-humanity-el\"><span>ethnic cleansing<\/span><\/a><span> and genocidal conduct in Darfur, specifically aimed at the Massalit people and other non-Arab communities. Now it has near total control of the region, the next stage could be even more brutal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019re looking at Al-Fasher as the culmination of a decades-long campaign in the Darfur region and across Sudan,\u201d Maddy Crowther, co-executive director <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wagingpeace.info\/\"><span>Waging Peace<\/span><\/a><span>, a non-profit which supports the Sudanese community in Britain, including asylum seekers and refugees, tells Dazed. \u201cIf Al-Fasher fully falls, then its population will be forced into displacement, whether that\u2019s internally or across borders, to Chad, South Sudan or Egypt. It will be a \u2018successful\u2019 genocide, a \u2018successful\u2019 ethnic cleansing, and there\u2019s something particularly horrifying about seeing that live-streamed directly to your phone.\u201d Below, you\u2019ll find a list of ways you can help.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><strong>DONATE<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><span>To provide immediate humanitarian assistance to people on the ground, there are a number of organisations you can donate to, including the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/sudanbenefit\"><span>Sudan Benefit Fund<\/span><\/a><span>, which supports community-run emergency response teams in Sudan; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sapa-usa.org\/sudan-war-crisis-emergency-relief\/\"><span>Sudanese American Physicians Association<\/span><\/a><span>, which is providing healthcare access and medical assistance; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sudan_cairo_aid\/?hl=en\"><span>Cairo Sudan Aid<\/span><\/a><span>, which provides various forms of assistance at border areas, from food and water to SIM cards, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.darfurwomenaction.org\/\"><span>Darfur Women Action<\/span><\/a><span> group, which supports women in the region most affected.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<h1><strong>WRITE TO YOUR MP<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><span>\u201cWe are realistic about the limitations of what MPs alone can achieve. But we have had it repeated to us time and time again that MPs are not hearing from their constituents about Sudan,\u201d says Maddie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While Britain has in place an arms embargo against Sudan, a recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2025\/oct\/28\/uk-military-equipment-rapid-support-forces-rsf-militia-accused-genocide-found-sudan-united-nations\"><em><span>Guardian<\/span><\/em><\/a><span> report revealed that the RSF has been using British-made weapons \u2013 most likely channelled through the United Arab Emirates, which has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2025\/05\/sudan-advanced-chinese-weaponry-provided-by-uae-identified-in-breach-of-arms-embargo-new-investigation\/\"><span>accused <\/span><\/a><span>of arming and funding the group (accusations it denies). According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.uk\/press-releases\/uk-arms-licensing-system-indefensible-british-linked-weapons-used-sudan\"><span>Amnesty International,<\/span><\/a><span> \u201cThe UK kept approving arms sales to the UAE, even when the risks were staring it in the face. This raises serious questions about the UK\u2019s potential complicity in mass atrocities.\u201d\u00a0 Campaigners are calling on Britain to impose a full arms embargo and increase political pressure on the UAE, and to increase humanitarian aid to Sudan. This latter demand is particularly important at a time when Labour is slashing the foreign aid budget to fund an increase in military spending.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Finally, the Sudanese community in Britain is asking for accountability and a role in any future peace talks, which the UK government is likely to have a role in. \u201cThe history of Sudan shows that when [the peace process] doesn\u2019t involve meaningful justice and accountability for human rights abuses and atrocities, the peace has a tendency not to last, and in fact, as we\u2019re seeing now, to considerably worsen and have absolutely dire consequences for the country,\u201d says Crowther.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There\u2019s a lot going on here, and it might be difficult to know where to begin, but Waging Peace has created a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wagingpeace.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/FINAL-template-letter-to-MPs.docx\"><span>template letter <\/span><\/a><span>to make it easier to contact your MP.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<h1>PROTEST<\/h1>\n<p>Last week, a large crowd gathered outside Downing Street to protest what organisers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/demo-claiming-uk-uae-involvement-in-sudan-war-blocks-british-pms-residence\">described<\/a> as \u201cBritain\u2019s material complicity in atrocities unfolding in Sudan\u2019s besieged city of El Fasher\u201d and demand an arms embargo against the UAE. There is another demonstration planned this Saturday (November 8), which will begin at Gloucester Road Station at 1pm.
