The few hours between the <\/span>party\u2019s start <span>and the 34-year-old <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/66609\/1\/zohran-mamdani-nyc-mayor-candidate-2025-interview-policies-tiktok-palestine\"><span>democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani<\/span><\/a><span> being announced as the mayor-elect of New York City were wrought with both extreme excitement and anxiety. As someone who went to a bar with friends on November 5 of last year, hoping to witness the unfolding of America\u2019s first female president, before realising President Donald Trump would take victory, I felt it too \u2013 New Yorkers were keeping their spirits high but their fingers crossed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In line for the party were girls with glittery \u201cZohran\u201d headbands and multiple Labubus hanging off of backpacks. Many had come straight from work for this moment, and there was a vegan food truck waiting for those who hadn\u2019t eaten yet. Some shared stories about voting. \u201cThere was such an energy in the building today, but I\u2019m nervous,\u201d I overheard one person in front of me admit. Once inside, there was a large stage setup with a livestream. Beside the stage was a checklist. At the time, there was just one task checked off: \u201cKnock on 2 million doors\u201d. What\u2019s left included \u201celect Zohran\u201d, \u201ctax the rich\u201d, get \u201cIce out of NYC\u201d and \u201cbe gay and do socialism\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"9c6298d4-a5fe-4eec-b092-b38d00d6c46d\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/0\/1430364.jpeg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"0.78\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Hot Girls 4 Zohran\" class=\"img\" height=\"2745\" src=\"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1430364.jpeg\" width=\"2137\" title=\"1430364\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Jazmine Brown<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>The election watch party had less actual watching involved than it did celebrating the movement that has been Mamdani\u2019s campaign, and an affordability agenda that many people in the event space had been actively involved in canvassing for. \u201cThe 2024 election taught us that we can\u2019t take anything for granted,\u201d Katia Portela, the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/gaysforzohran\/?hl=en\">Gays for Zohran<\/a>, said in a speech at the start of the evening, before another organiser, Corbin Lopez, asked the crowd where the \u201cbad bitches\u201d were. Naturally, everyone in the room screamed. Host and comedian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/micaheames\/\">Micah Eames<\/a> and New York drag queen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/harshbabe.nyc\/following\/\">Harsh Babe<\/a> riffed about Bushwick polycules, being \u201cbi for zohran\u201d and ordering a bacon egg and cheese the right way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Jokes aside, as the night went on, the nervousness in the room seemed to evaporate into thin air. People started saying \u201cwhen he wins\u201d instead of \u201cif he wins\u201d, and making plans for the moment it happens. Some said their plans were simply \u201cdoing shots\u201d, while others talked about texting their friends that they love them. \u201cThat\u2019s the first thing I\u2019m doing when he wins is being hungover,\u201d said Lopez. \u201cA Zohran win to me would mean that we are really going to the next chapter of this country and of this world.\u201d Lopez\u2019s friend, Langston Ables, concurred: \u201cWith Trump, <\/span><span>everyone&#8217;s been so divided, and c<\/span><span>ommunity is something we really need.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Even before the announced win, the community that people were searching for through Mamdani was already evident in the room, and in hundreds of other rooms across the city. There were speeches from the highly specific \u201cFor Zohran\u201d accounts and drag performances from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/berthavnyc\/\"><span>Bertha Vanayshun<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/harshbabe.nyc\/following\/\"><span>Harsh Babe<\/span><\/a><span>, where people spelt \u201cMamdani\u201d to Chappel Roan\u2019s <\/span><em><span>Hot to Go<\/span><\/em><span>. There was even Zohran trivia, where people shouted his bodega sandwich order and recited his favourite music venue. Mamdani is an immigrant who will lead a city powered by immigrants. He will be New York City\u2019s youngest leader in more than a century, the first Muslim mayor, the first South Asian mayor and potentially the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/11\/04\/nyregion\/how-zohran-mamdani-won-nyc-mayor.html\"><span>most influential democratic socialist in the country<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cNew York itself is such a diverse and magical city, and the magic is from the people themselves: the working class and from the immigrants,\u201d said Myesha Choudhury, one of the Hot Girls for Zohran, before his win was announced<\/span>. \u201c<span>It would be so special for each person to feel like they are heard and represented in our politics.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Not even an hour after voting closed at 9pm \u2013 and far quicker than I expected \u2013 someone at the girls and gays for Zohran party grabbed the mic and screamed, \u201cThe New York motherfucking Times called it\u201d. The room erupted into cheers and people danced to \u201c<\/span>Mr Brightside\u201d<span>, as Eames and Harsh Babe ticked \u201celect Zohran\u201d off the checklist. People cried, took shots and reached for their phones to text their loved ones. I opened mine to the same text, sent to me multiple times: \u201cATTENTION YOU NEW YORK POLITIHOES ZOHRAN MAMDADDY just SLID into the NYC MAYORS OFFICE with a THIC JUICY WIN that\u2019s got us all SOAKED.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>With Mamdani taking office on January 1, 2026, there was one hot girl for Zohran, Kathleen Horan, who perhaps put it best for what comes next after the celebrations (and hangovers): \u201cWe all love Zohran so much.
