For nearly two years, the 27-year-old had been working as a content executive for an agency in Leeds, writing blog posts and product descriptions for clients. She loved it:<\/span><span> she\u2019d always enjoyed \u201creading and writing\u201d, and the role offered her a space to put these interests into practice. <\/span><span>\u201cI was proud to say \u2018I\u2019m a writer\u2019,\u201d she says.<\/span><span> She quickly bonded with her team too: \u201cWe were all really close, had great banter [&#8230;] I was friends with basically everyone. <\/span><span>I loved coming to work every day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Months after Liv joined the agency, generative AI chatbot ChatGPT was launched by OpenAI<\/span><span>, triggering global panic about long-term job security. <\/span><span>At first, Liv\u2019s company assured staff their jobs were \u201csafe\u201d, but in 2024 senior <\/span><span>management began encouraging her to use ChatGPT to \u201cspeed things up\u201d. She begrudgingly complied. \u201cMy role was to essentially \u2018proofread\u2019 the AI-generated content,\u201d she says. Soon after, management began what she now describes as \u201cthe process of managing me out of the company through a personal improvement plan.\u201d Weeks later, she was fired, and later learned that they had recruited an \u201cAI specialist\u201d as their new head of content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>ChatGPT has catalysed the ongoing <\/span><span>AI boom,<\/span><span> which is continuing to rapidly transform the world of work. Increasingly, AI is being touted as a cheaper and faster alternative to human labour: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/the-40-jobs-most-at-risk-of-ai-and-40-it-cant-touch-13447013\"><span>recent research from Microsoft<\/span><\/a><span> suggested that translators, historians, mathematicians, coders, editors and writers are some of the jobs most at risk of automation. Analysis by the <\/span><span>Tony Blair Institute (TBI) has found estimates that between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britsafe.org\/safety-management\/2024\/ai-could-displace-3m-uk-jobs-but-losses-to-be-offset-by-newly-created-roles-report-finds\"><span>one million and three million UK jobs will be displaced by AI by 2050<\/span><\/a><span>, and there are nascent signs that AI has <\/span><em><span>already<\/span><\/em><span> ousted significant numbers of workers from their jobs: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/news\/new-study-reveals-early-impact-of-ai-on-job-market-in-uk\"><span>one King\u2019s College London study<\/span><\/a><span> found that between 2021 and 2025, firms whose workforces are highly exposed to AI capabilities reduced total employment by 4.5 per cent on average.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-tiktok\" data-id=\"7556212128395398422\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>27-year-old Imogene also lost her job to AI this year. She previously worked as a social media and design executive for a sustainability company, managing \u201call of the company\u2019s social media pages, from strategy and content creation to analytics and campaign planning\u201d. Social media had always been her \u201cpassion\u201d: \u201cI\u2019m completely self-taught, I didn\u2019t go to university for it. I just fell in love with creating, building strategies and connecting with audiences online.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Earlier this year, Imogene was told her role was \u201cat risk\u201d and made redundant shortly after. \u201cThey said they\u2019d bought new AI software back in January that could supposedly do my job. They said it was more \u2018cost effective\u2019,\u201d she recalls. \u201cIt was disheartening, but I\u2019m trying to see it as a fresh start.\u201d Now, Imogene is focusing on \u201capplying for new jobs every day\u201d alongside growing her own TikTok account, where she has more than 53,000 followers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Is AI really the viable alternative to human labour that some employers are making it out to be? Neither Imogene nor Liv are convinced. \u201cI don\u2019t think AI can fully replace human creativity,\u201d Imogene says. This chimes with Liv. \u201c<\/span><span>AI can throw up a bunch of words and make it seem interesting, but nothing beats content written by humans,\u201d she says. \u201cAI can\u2019t begin to describe genuine human emotions and the way we experience the world. It will never truly relate to us on that level.\u201d Still, she says she feels her \u201c<\/span><span>ability to compete with the future of AI feels like a battle I\u2019ve already lost\u201d, and as a result she\u2019s pivoting to working in healthcare. \u201cPrimarily for the job security,\u201d she adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>One feature of capitalism is its ability to create work for people to do. A world without work is incompatible with capitalism<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/business.leeds.ac.uk\/departments-economics\/staff\/144\/professor-david-spencer\">Professor David Spencer<\/a>, an economist at the University of Leeds and author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politybooks.com\/bookdetail?book_slug=making-light-work-an-end-to-toil-in-the-twenty-first-century--9781509548620&amp;utm_source=miragenews&amp;utm_medium=miragenews&amp;utm_campaign=news\"><em>Making Light Work: An End to Toil in the Twenty-First Century<\/em><\/a>, is sceptical of the idea that AI is a silver bullet for inefficiency. \u201cAI is often seen as a way to boost efficiency, but its ability to increase efficiency very much depends on how it is used,\u201d he explains. \u201cIf it is used to replace tasks that are already inefficient, its impact may be to <em>embed<\/em> inefficiency.\u201d <\/span><span>It seems likely this is the trajectory we\u2019re currently on, given that other technological advances made in the last 100 years <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-66233654\">have not made us more productive<\/a> or led to any meaningful reduction in working hours (in 1930, John Maynard Keynes predicted that by the end of the century, a 15-hour work week would be the norm in the UK). And according to Spencer, this is a feature of the system rather than a bug: \u201cOne feature of capitalism is its ability to create work for people to do. A world without work is incompatible with capitalism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As time passes, could more and more of us fall victim to the AI boom? While Liv and Imogene\u2019s experiences prove that the threat of AI to job security is very real, Spencer stresses that it\u2019s likely too soon to draw conclusions about exactly how AI is impacting employment. \u201cData is hard to get \u2013 and it is probably too early to say,\u201d he explains, adding that figures which compare current employment rates to employment rates pre-ChatGPT really tell us very little about AI\u2019s impact on job security. \u201cIt is difficult to separate out job losses due to traditional cost-cutting from job displacement due to the adoption of AI,\u201d he continues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Spencer is also keen to stress that we are not on a \u201cpredetermined\u201d path with technological advances. \u201cThere is scope to redirect [technology], and not use it to compound inefficiency and embed work.\u201d With a little imagination, he says, technology can be used in ways which makes work <\/span><em><span>better<\/span><\/em><span>. \u201cIf technology was democratised \u2013 developed and used with a view to making life better rather than just enriching a few already-rich capital owners \u2013 then society could look forward to a better future: one where efficiency allows us all to lead more rewarding work lives, while also enjoying more free time.\u201d This resonates with Liv. \u201c<\/span><span>AI should be used as a tool to make people\u2019s lives easier,\u201d she surmises. \u201cWe should have AI handle tasks we don\u2019t want to spend time on \u2013 cooking, cleaning, washing \u2013 not taking away our creativity and ability to think for ourselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span>*Name has been changed<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<footer class=\"article-footer\">\n<div class=\"wrapper\">\n<div class=\"article-series\">\n<h4 class=\"heading\">More on these topics<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-series\"><a class=\"series\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\">Life &amp;
