It\u2019s housed within the Poly Center, one of many skyscrapers scattered across Chengdu\u2019s clouded skyline. Here, clubgoers pile into lifts, shoulder-to-shoulder with office workers, and ride up to the 21st floor where the city\u2019s most elusive club awaits to \u201ctake them to another galaxy\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It could easily sound mythical \u2013 a hidden club up in the clouds packed out with club kids raving until the light pours in. But, however high up .TAG may be, the club is firmly grounded by a desire to create a space for people to become something larger than themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Founded in 2014 by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/hakkaellen\/?hl=en\">Ellen Zhang<\/a>, the space has become a sanctuary for LGBTQ+ partygoers in the city, thriving despite regulatory hurdles and sociopolitical pressures. Just over a decade since its conception, the club is now closing its doors, living on in the hazy memory of the clubbers and photographs like those captured by Berlin-based photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DOGmzn-jFzz\/?hl=en&amp;img_index=1\">Julien Tell<\/a> in his latest series.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"28a07f24-9c88-4f7f-aa98-b37301573c37\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/1365\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1420\/8\/1428027.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"0.67\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Julien Tell, .TAG\" class=\"img\" height=\"2048\" src=\"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1428027-1.jpg\" width=\"1365\" title=\"1428027-1\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Julien Tell<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Some photographs capture a dance floor packed out with sweaty ravers: lollipops in mouths, arms wrapped around waists as DJs tether to the decks and their sprawl of colourful cables. \u201cIt\u2019s all music, all the time,\u201d Tell says. \u201cThe sound fills every corner, even the spots where you can sit, catch your breath, and sometimes nap, as some of the Chinese ravers famously do.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In other shots, the space feels more sparse as clubbers rest along window ledges or on each other\u2019s laps. Light cuts through the window to cast singular silhouettes of those who have made it to see the morning in. There\u2019s a noticeable split in the space: moody industrial techno sets downstairs, ambient and house upstairs in the Hidden Bar. But beyond the sound, if you can escape it, the club produces space for both hedonism and tenderness, often in conjunction.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"b7cd4340-8a44-477d-9638-b37301572e91\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/1365\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1420\/8\/1428024.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"0.67\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\".TAG\" class=\"img\" height=\"2048\" src=\"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1428024-1.jpg\" width=\"1365\" title=\"1428024-1\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Julien Tell<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Although hidden high up in the sky, .TAG attracted a diverse crowd of clubgoers. \u201cThere were tattoo artists, students, office workers, and anyone who just wanted to be themselves and dance,\u201d Tell recalls. This included the \u2018Chengdu OGs\u2019 \u2013 regulars who\u2019d been coming to the club since its inception. \u201cThen there were the boss women. Chengdu femmes are direct, powerful, almost intimidating, and they owned the room,\u201d Tell continues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Those nights also challenged the photographer\u2019s own assumptions. \u201cGrowing up in the US as a person of Asian descent, I was often surrounded by stereotypes portraying Asian people as shy or reserved. Over time, and through my own experiences, those notions were completely shattered. The people I met were bold, open, and unafraid to be themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The photographer was first welcomed into the club while visiting a friend in Chengdu for the Lunar New Year. The annual celebration sees cities come to a standstill for a week \u2013 shops close, traffic halts, and people travel back home. But as shutters came down, .TAG opened up, hosting an eight-day Hot Pot Marathon where DJs, ravers and friends from across China and beyond came together for techno, house, ambient sets, live performances, massages and a communal hotpot meal on the final day.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"2262a857-ba72-409c-8a26-b3730157417e\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1420\/8\/1428028.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.5\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\".TAG\" class=\"img\" height=\"1365\" src=\"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1428028.jpg\" width=\"2048\" title=\"1428028\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Julien Tell<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>A community like .TAG can be hard to come by for queer people, especially in places with restrictive politics. While the city of Chengdu has become known as China\u2019s gayest city \u2013 a place distant from Beijing and Shanghai, where the government maintains a tougher image of social order \u2013 it\u2019s not perfect. It\u2019s an impression of the city that Tell quickly learned was more complicated. \u201cOn my first trip, a raver asked me what I thought of China. I immediately said, \u2018I love it!\u2019 But he went on to explain how challenging life can be, especially for queer people and ravers like those at .TAG, with constant police pressure, raids, and threats of closure. That really hit me. I began to see how much love and quiet resistance was settled into that space.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That\u2019s why his documentation feels especially vital: a way to immortalise and share the legacy of what can be created when club spaces are built on genuine care and consideration. While the club has now closed, Zhang already has plans for a new space \u2013 one that will keep the spirit alive. \u201cI have no doubt she\u2019ll continue creating places like this: spaces that are alive, inclusive, and full of care,\u201d Tell says. \u201cThe spirit of .TAG isn\u2019t gone; it\u2019s just evolving.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<footer
