When it comes to steel frames, there\u2019s always a story about a legendary frame that was built by someone with no credit. One name on the down tube, but different hands building it. It\u2019s often talked about in hushed whispers\u2014\u201cdid you know?\u201d But for the people actually building those frames, it\u2019s an opportunity.<\/p>\n

Cicli Barco is a custom steel frame builder in Italy, but it\u2019s also a contract build shop, and the story we heard from Gianluca Barco at Bespoked Osaka was one of pride in that history. The company website tells of \u201cGranda Mario,\u201d who built \u201chandcrafted frames used by legends like Freddy Maertens and Eddy Merckx\u201d without real recognition. Barco spoke with pride, though, saying that the family\u2019s reputation for high-quality fabrication has shifted that dynamic. Today, while Cicli Barco still splits production evenly between a company label and contract work, the Barco name carries such prestige that other brands now proudly advertise when their frames are \u201cmade by Barco.\u201d<\/p>\n

Under the Cicli Barco label, the brand produces around 100 frames a year, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern design concepts. For Barco, this contract work isn\u2019t just about paying the bills; it provides a valuable avenue to experiment with new techniques and view frame building from different perspectives.<\/p>\n

At Bespoked Osaka, Cicli Barco brought a literal \u201clove letter\u201d to this craft. To be clear, that\u2019s literal as in half of the frame is covered with a handwritten \u201clove letter,\u201d creating a stop-in-your-tracks aesthetic. As Barco explained, while anyone can source tubes and parts, developing a unique signature that makes a bike undeniably a \u201cBarco\u201d is one of the hardest achievements for a frame builder.<\/p>\n

The true engineering standout on the bike, however, is a zero-stack head tube designed to integrate seamlessly with modern cockpits without resorting to oversized tubing. Instead of a standard straight head tube, Barco uses a modular central section that can be adapted to specific sizes and geometries. The main tubes are spot-welded to this central part, and a special tool is used to shape the tube to fit the headset cup. Once the cup is inserted, the weld is finished and then reinforced with silver brazing, resulting in an incredibly narrow and clean aesthetic.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an elegant solution to a problem that modern metal bikes are plagued with, but the execution is mirrored throughout the rest of the bike. Look at the seatpost clamp, and you\u2019ll see TIG welding and silver brazing used once again to solve a modern bike problem that, once you see it, you can\u2019t unsee. On this bike, there is no collar. Instead, the seat stays have a bolt through them that, when tightened, closes the cut in the seatpost and acts as a clamp without the visual bulk of one. Like the head tube, it\u2019s so genius it has to be highlighted, but it\u2019s not simple. Using both welding techniques together allows the builders to tightly control material deformation, giving them the freedom to explore complex designs without compromising the structural integrity of the steel.<\/p>\n

To finish off the build, the parts have to match. Just like the metalwork, there\u2019s a beautiful balance of clean lines, high technology, and functionality. The drivetrain is SRAM RED XPLR AXS with a CeramicSpeed OSPW and an INGRD crank. The handlebars\u2014featuring an integrated stem\u2014and the wheels come from Polymer Workshop, a brand that has also staked its reputation on solving modern integration problems and fitting into as many contemporary frames as possible. In this case, the definition of modern is slightly turned on its head, but aesthetically, everything is a perfect match. The deep wheels bring a contrast of black that matches the handwritten text, the fork, and the INGRD chainring. There are pops of chrome in the RED drivetrain, and there are even easter eggs of red in the script that match the Italian flag at the back of the bike.<\/p>\n
