Yet tucked along the wild borderlands where southeastern Alaska meets the southwestern Yukon and the far northwestern corner of British Columbia sits another wall of rock and ice — one that eclipses even the Alaska Range in total high-altitude concentration. These are the St. Elias Mountains, and they are extreme in every physical dimension.

Related: Comparing North America’s Highest Peaks, Denali vs. Mount St. Elias—Goliaths of the North

Spanning two nations, the St. Elias range contains 15 of North America’s 27 highest major summits, when measured by mountains with at least 1,500 feet of topographical prominence. While Denali holds the continent’s single highest peak, the St. Elias range claims a higher average concentration of giant mountains. Its top three summits — Mount Logan, Mount St. Elias, and Mount Lucania — average roughly 18,300 feet above sea level. As noted in regional mountain registries, that tops the average of the Alaska Range’s three highest peaks by nearly 900 feet, establishing the St. Elias as the highest overall mountain mass on the continent.

Mount Saint Elias Mountains, which is part of the larger Coast Mountains range. Mount St. Elias itself is the second-highest peak in both the United States and Canada, standing at 18,008 feet. | Photo: extremetur.com

What makes the range singular, however, is its direct interaction with the sea. The National Park Service recognizes the St. Elias as the highest coastal mountain range on Earth, where sheer granite walls and massive glaciers drop straight into Pacific waters. Standing near tidewater at Icy Bay, Mount St. Elias rears up to an elevation of 18,008 feet in roughly 10 horizontal miles from the head of Taan Fjord. Further south in the range’s coastal sector, Mount Fairweather rises abruptly to 15,325 feet above the surf. There are few places on the planet where high-alpine cold and salt water meet with such immediate, vertical violence.

Deep within the interior of the range sits Mount Logan, Canada’s highest point at 19,551 feet. According to geographic accounts documented by The Canadian Encyclopedia, Mount Logan is widely recognized as possessing the largest base circumference of any non-volcanic mountain on Earth. It is not merely a single peak, but an immense ice-draped massif capped by a high-altitude summit plateau stretching nearly 12 miles long. Because it is cradled behind outer coastal guardians like Mount St. Elias, Logan remains difficult to view from lower valleys, hiding its true proportions within a wilderness of endless blue ice.

Pacific slam directly into the 18,000-foot wall of coastal stone. The mountains force the air upward in a rapid atmospheric lift, generating catastrophic precipitation. Environmental monitoring by the National Park Service indicates that higher elevations within Wrangell-St. Elias routinely receive over 60 feet (720″) of annual snowfall. Prolonged winter storms routinely lock down the high icefields for weeks at a time, bringing temperature drops well below zero and hurricane-force winds that strip the ridges bare.

The St. Elias Mountains do not cater to casual travelers. Heavy weather, remote access, and vast glacier fields obscure them from easy view on many days of the year. Yet for those who catch them clear against a cold blue sky, there is no mistaking what stands before them: a wilderness of sheer, unyielding scale, where the earth reaches its highest coastal limit.

Related: 365 Million Years in a Snowmelt Puddle: The Bizarre High-Alpine Biology of Sierra Nevada Fairy Shrimp

Mount Logan is widely recognized as possessing the largest base circumference of any non-volcanic mountain on Earth. | Photo: thecanadianencyclopedia.ca

An aerial view of Icy Bay, Yahtse Glacier, and Mount St. Elias. | Photo: NPS/Jacob W.
