Some storms deliver light, fluffy powder that seems to float around your skis, while others leave behind heavy, wet snow that takes considerably more effort to turn through. The difference often comes down to something called the snow-to-liquid ratio (SLR).

Snow is surprisingly complex. Once it reaches the ground, it can change shape, settle, compact, gain or lose stability, and transform in response to temperature and moisture. But even before it lands, the conditions in the atmosphere play a major role in determining what kind of snow we get.

What Is Snow-to-Liquid Ratio?

Snow-to-liquid ratio is a measurement of how much snow accumulates compared with the amount of liquid water it contains. Put simply, it tells us how much snow would be left if we melted a fresh snowfall.

For example, imagine measuring 20 inches of fresh snow and then melting it down to one inch of water. That gives you a snow-to-liquid ratio of 20:1. If the same amount of water produced only 10 inches of snow, the ratio would be 10:1.

The difference is important. A higher SLR means lighter, less dense snow, while a lower SLR means heavier, denser snow. A 20:1 ratio is generally considered very fluffy, while 10:1 snow is noticeably heavier.

For skiers, this is one of the reasons some powder days feel so much better than others. Light snow is easier to move through, making turns feel effortless. Heavier snow can grab at your skis, require more energy and make an otherwise excellent snowfall feel like hard work.

Fluffy, high SLR snow — the best to ski! | Photo Credit: BMG

Why Do Some Places Get Lighter Snow Than Others?

Geography has a major influence on the type of snow a mountain receives. Maritime regions, such as the Cascades, Sierra Nevada and Coastal Ranges, are influenced by moisture-rich air moving in from the Pacific Ocean. Their storms often deliver substantial precipitation, but the resulting snow can be relatively dense and heavy.

Continental regions, including much of the Rockies and Wasatch, tend to have colder, drier conditions. They are often associated with lighter snowfall and higher snow-to-liquid ratios.

As a general rule, maritime snow is often described as having ratios around 10:1 to 12:1, while continental snow can reach 16:1 or higher. These are broad regional tendencies, not guarantees. Conditions can vary considerably from one storm to another, even at the same resort.

This is also why a storm total alone doesn’t tell the whole story. A foot of snow at a maritime resort can feel very different from a foot of snow in the Rockies. Both might look impressive on the snow report, but the amount of water contained in that snowfall can be quite different.

Snowflake size and temperature chart. The result is generally heavier snow with a lower SLR.

Colder conditions usually favor higher ratios and lighter snowfall. However, the relationship is not quite as tiny particles in the atmosphere called ice nuclei. As they grow, their shape and structure depend on the temperature and moisture available in the cloud. Under favorable conditions, they can develop intricate, branching structures known as dendrites. Notice the dropoff as the temperature decreases past 10F. | Photo Credit: BoulderCast

Is It Possible for It to Be Too Cold?

Surprisingly, yes. If temperatures become extremely cold, snow crystals can become smaller and take on different shapes, such as columns and simple plates, rather than the large, branching dendrites associated with fluffy powder.

These smaller crystals can pack together more tightly when they land, resulting in denser snow and a lower SLR than might be expected from the temperature alone.

The best conditions for high snow-to-liquid ratios often occur when cloud temperatures are around 4°F to 15°F (-15°C to -9°C). This range can encourage the growth of large, branching dendritic crystals. Once temperatures drop well below that range, crystal growth changes and ratios can begin to decrease.

Of course, temperature isn’t the only factor. Moisture availability, wind and the structure of the storm all influence the final result. Strong winds can break delicate snow crystals apart and pack them more tightly together, reducing the amount of space they occupy. The snow can also become denser after landing as it settles and compacts.

This is why two storms at the same resort can produce very different snow conditions, even if their temperatures are similar.

For skiers, the takeaway is simple: snowfall totals only tell part of the story. The snow-to-liquid ratio helps explain why one storm delivers bottomless, effortless powder while another leaves behind heavy snow that has you fighting for every turn. Next time a forecast promises a foot of fresh snow, it might be worth looking beyond the total and checking the ratio, too.

Snow liquid ratio.
