class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In today\u2019s art world, provocation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/list\/art-news\/artists\/controversial-artworks-21st-century-1234736563\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">controversy<\/a> are part and parcel of the market. Think recent pieces like Maurizio Cattelan\u2019s \u201cComedian,\u201d a.k.a. the duct-taped banana, or Damien Hirst\u2019s diamond- and platinum-coated 18th-century human skull titled \u201cFor the Love of God.\u201d And while art has never been immune to controversy, it hasn\u2019t always been, let\u2019s say, expected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the turn of the 20th century, art\u2014especially the \u201chigh\u201d mediums of painting and sculpture\u2014were viewed and taught through the lens of deeply ingrained conventions about what made art good. Chief among these was representation: people look like people, landscapes look like landscapes, and rooms look like rooms. That is, until Henri Matisse created \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/collection\/works\/78389\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Red Studio<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A prized painting in MoMA\u2019s collection in New York, \u201cThe Red Studio,\u201d or \u201cL\u2019Atelier rouge,\u201d was so unexpected that, according to a wonderful new video from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=unla1jTwXdY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Great Art Explained<\/a>, Matisse may not have really been able to grasp what he\u2019d done either, at least not right away. The documentary short by art historian James Payne traces the history of this paradigm-shifting painting, from the artist\u2019s personal influences to the societal and technological shifts experienced by the art-viewing public. \u201cThe painting seemed to break almost every established rule of Western painting,\u201d Payne says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one else knew what to make of the work either, which stretches more than seven feet wide. Matisse flattened the picture plane, removing the usual cues about perspective and depth with a quickly applied swath of Venetian red. (Payne delves into an interesting story about that, too.) Here, color itself defines the composition in place of line and contrast, drawing on friend, mentor, and Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau\u2019s advice that color, as Payne describes, \u201cshould be thought, dreamed, and imagined.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen Matisse painted \u2018The Red Studio\u2019 in 1911, it was one of the strangest pictures anyone had ever seen\u2014a room almost completely consumed by red\u2014furniture reduced to outlines, paintings hanging on walls that barely seem to exist, and a grandfather clock with 12 numbers but no hands,\u201d Payne says. \u201cEven Matisse wasn\u2019t entirely sure what he had created, and nobody wanted to buy it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Red Studio\u201d didn\u2019t sell even at the famous International Exhibition of Modern Art, better known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.artic.edu\/armoryshow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Armory Show of 1913<\/a>, where it was in the company of experimental styles like Fauvism and Cubism, not to mention Marcel Duchamp\u2019s proto-Dadaist \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.philamuseum.org\/objects\/51449\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nude Descending a Staircase (No. 2)<\/a>.\u201d Although \u201cThe Red Studio\u201d traveled to numerous exhibitions, it was broadly panned by critics. Matisse hid it away for about a decade before the piece experienced an unlikely stint at a London nightclub.
