South Korea<\/a>\u00a0will pour nearly $16\u00a0billion on\u00a0artificial intelligence<\/a> and semiconductors,\u00a0<\/a>South Korea’s President Lee Jae Myung said in his annual budget address to parliament.<\/p>\n

“We will invest 21.3 trillion won (\u20ac14.3 billion, $15.97 billion), nearly twice \u200bthis year’s amount, in AI and the three megaprojects of semiconductors, physical \u200bAI and \u200cAI data centres,” Lee said on Monday.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0added that 4.7 trillion won will be invested to bolster\u00a0“frontier AI development projects, with the aim of achieving world-leading performance for our own AI model, a national strategic asset.”<\/p>\n

The Lee administration has unveiled a record budget proposal for next year, featuring a 12.8% increase in government spending to 820.9 trillion won (\u20ac551.5 billion, $615.62 billion).<\/p>\n

The proposal needs parliamentary approval, and\u00a0Lee’s party, the Democratic Party of Korea\u00a0(DPK), currently holds the majority.<\/p>\n

South Korea is Asia’s fourth-largest economy and home to two of the world’s biggest memory chip makers \u2014\u00a0 Samsung Electronics<\/a> and SK Hynix.<\/p>\n
