The Metro\u2019s A Line rumbles overhead, while a crowd of leather-jacketed scenesters spills into the parking lot, digital cameras pointed up at the billboard overhead: \u201cDeadbeat in Los Angeles.\u201d The crowd continues to rapidly multiply; just an hour prior, <a class=\"T3D\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tameimpala\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Tame Impala<\/a>\u2019s Kevin Parker had announced a surprise DJ set at <a class=\"T3D\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/cafetondo\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Caf\u00e9 Tondo<\/a>. At 9 p.m., Parker slips behind the decks, soundtracking the night with cuts from his fifth studio album, <em>Deadbeat<\/em>. For one hour, an impromptu rave pulses through the night. But by morning, the location would be back to serving lattes.<\/p>\n<p>In just over a year, Caf\u00e9 Tondo (or \u201cTondo,\u201d as the regulars call it) has accumulated the kind of lore most venues spend years trying to manufacture. By morning, it\u2019s a WFH-friendly hot spot where locals linger over lattes, but by nightfall, the DJ booth and dance floor take over. With more than 46,000 Instagram followers, Tondo has become a destination for hush-hush celebrity drop-ins and a glittering roster of artists who\u2019ve taken to its decks. <a class=\"T3D\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nylon.com\/entertainment\/laufey-pinkpantheress-etsy-collab-coachella-exclusive\">PinkPantheress<\/a>, <a class=\"T3D\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/remiwolf\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Remi Wolf<\/a>, and <a class=\"T3D\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/iambeckyg\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Becky G<\/a> have all passed through, and a recent filming sighting has sparked speculation amongst locals that the bar could cameo in the second season of <em>I Love LA<\/em>, putting it among the ranks of Season 1 locales like <a class=\"T3D\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tenantsofthetrees\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Tenants of the Trees<\/a> and <a class=\"T3D\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/canyoncoffee\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Canyon Coffee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sWr iGR CEt\">\n<figure class=\"Qf5 E1M\">\n<div class=\"vmZ F8Y ap2\" style=\"padding-top:133.3333%\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgix.bustle.com\/uploads\/image\/2026\/10\/30\/a5a5fd6d\/2025_08_tondo1759-final.jpg?w=414&amp;h=552&amp;fit=crop&amp;crop=faces&amp;dpr=2\" alt class=\"EdX\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Yte pt7 okb\"><figcaption class=\"rv9 TrI\"><cite class=\"hW6\">Courtesy of Rich Stapleton<\/cite><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s a pretty good trick for a place that wasn\u2019t necessarily trying to become a nightlife destination in the first place. Originally envisioned as a daytime-focused caf\u00e9, Tondo quickly took on a life of its own after dark. On opening night in July 2025, Mexico City-based <a class=\"T3D\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/escuby.wav\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">DJ Escuby<\/a> took over the decks to celebrate, as a line snaked around the block; cofounder <a class=\"T3D\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/abrahamcampillo\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Abe Campillo<\/a> had to send his team on multiple unexpected beer runs to keep up with the crowd. \u201cI was like, \u2018Oh shit, we\u2019re onto something.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That instinct to bring people together is rooted in Campillo\u2019s upbringing. The creative director and cofounder of <a class=\"T3D\" href=\"https:\/\/mouthwash.studio\/\" target=\"_blank\">MOUTHWASH Studio g<\/a>rew up in Texas with family roots in Monterrey, Mexico, frequently moving across country lines. Coffee was always in the house, as were mugs of Abuelita hot chocolate, fresh pastries from nearby<em> panader\u00edas<\/em>, and, most important, people. Campillo drew on the tradition of all-day hosting that would eventually become part of the blueprint for Tondo.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"rs0\"><p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of places that do good food. There\u2019s a lot of places that look beautiful. There\u2019s a lot of places that do good music. I think there\u2019s very few that do all of them.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But its musical identity was taking shape long before Parker showed up. Before launch, <a class=\"T3D\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/escuby.wav\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Escuby<\/a> consulted Tondo about the caf\u00e9\u2019s sound, helping shape an environment where DJs could experiment without being confined to one genre. Since then, DJs including <a class=\"T3D\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/victoriamoura\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Victoria Moura<\/a>, <a class=\"T3D\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/hektormass\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Hektor Mass<\/a>, and <a class=\"T3D\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lovebaila\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Love Baila<\/a> have taken their turns behind the decks, making Tondo\u2019s weekend nights as much about who\u2019s playing next as who might unexpectedly walk through the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we first started, it was predominantly Latin DJs,\u201d Campillo says. Since then, the programming has expanded to include other DJs within the team\u2019s circle, along with the occasional vinyl set.<\/p>\n<p>For Spanish DJ <a class=\"T3D\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/hektormass\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Hektor Mass<\/a>, the appeal was immediate. \u201cIt was amazing because the place is unique \u2014 where it\u2019s located, the crowd, the vibe,\u201d says Mass, reflecting on his first time playing Caf\u00e9 Tondo. Earlier this month, he returned for his third set, playing house, melodic, and Afro house tracks. By 10 p.m., the ambient red light hadn\u2019t changed, but the crowd had doubled in size. It\u2019s so rich and it\u2019s because of its Latin culture, not even Mexican per se,\u201d he says. \u201cTo understand the Latin culture of Los Angeles is really a wider view that it became its own thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chinatown wasn\u2019t necessarily where Campillo set out to open. He had been searching everywhere from Silver Lake to Echo Park and Northeast LA before coming across the former Oriel space, a French bistro and wine bar that he describes as his dream location. The \u201c<a class=\"T3D\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/los-angeles\/news\/l-a-s-chinatown-is-officially-one-of-the-coolest-neighborhoods-on-the-planet-091726\" target=\"_blank\">coolest neighborhood in the world<\/a>\u201d already had its own established nightlife scene with spots like <a class=\"T3D\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cafetristela.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Caf\u00e9 Triste<\/a> and <a class=\"T3D\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lasita-la.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lasita<\/a>, and Los Angeles State Historic Park \u2014 a longtime destination for music festivals and DJ sets \u2014 sitting just across the street. With an existing beer-and-wine license, Tondo went from idea to opening in roughly 75 days.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sWr iGR CEt\">\n<figure class=\"Qf5 E1M\">\n<div class=\"vmZ F8Y ap2\" style=\"padding-top:74.9584%\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgix.bustle.com\/uploads\/image\/2026\/10\/30\/3ecacbf9\/sean-davidson_10.jpg?w=414&amp;h=310&amp;fit=crop&amp;crop=faces&amp;dpr=2\" alt class=\"EdX\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Yte pt7 okb\"><figcaption class=\"rv9 TrI\"><cite class=\"hW6\">Courtesy of Sean Davidson<\/cite><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Even the name has an artistic reference: A <em>tondo<\/em> is a circular work of art, a shape that appears throughout the caf\u00e9\u2019s visual identity. The concept itself was similarly fluid from the beginning: part caf\u00e9, part bar, part restaurant, and, eventually, something much harder to categorize, just like the clientele it attracts. Think girls dressed to the nines, tattooed guys in trucker hats and baggy jeans, and Dodgers fans fresh from the stadium, still wearing their sunglasses after dark. It\u2019s a room where a full beat and a baseball cap feel equally appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>That middle ground (somewhere between a casual glass of cava and committing to a night out on the dance floor with your friends) seems to be part of Tondo\u2019s appeal. \u201cYou have a glass of wine, you\u2019re dancing to the music. It\u2019s always a unique scene,\u201d adds regular Tanya Garcia, who started coming to Tondo for its World Cup watch parties but has stuck around since.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sWr iGR CEt\">\n<figure class=\"Qf5 E1M\">\n<div class=\"vmZ F8Y ap2\" style=\"padding-top:133.3333%\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgix.bustle.com\/uploads\/image\/2026\/10\/30\/098c3aaf\/outside_boleros-night_tuesday_1.jpg?w=414&amp;h=552&amp;fit=crop&amp;crop=faces&amp;dpr=2\" alt class=\"EdX\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Yte pt7 okb\"><figcaption class=\"rv9 TrI\"><cite class=\"hW6\">Courtesy of Wally Montes de Oca<\/cite><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>New and returning DJs rotate through the decks, the menu changes seasonally, and no two nights seem to attract exactly the same crowd. \u201cI think it\u2019s the overall experience,\u201d Campillo says. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of places that do good food. There\u2019s a lot of places that look beautiful. There\u2019s a lot of places that do good music. I think there\u2019s very few that do all of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And apparently, some people are leaving Tondo with more than a good night out. According to Campillo, the caf\u00e9 has even become something of a matchmaking destination. \u201cI\u2019ve seen a lot of people find love at Tondo,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Part of Tondo\u2019s charm is how seamlessly the party spills between the caf\u00e9 and the outdoor space, making it feel like you\u2019re a part of the action whether you\u2019re inside or out. Step inside the roughly 1,200-square-foot caf\u00e9 and bar, and the atmosphere shifts depending on the time of day. Campillo originally envisioned something more focused on mornings, but the crowd had other ideas. \u201cWe originally were more into the caf\u00e9, but [customers] were craving live music and the ability to hang out with friends at scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"sWr iGR CEt\">\n<figure class=\"Qf5 E1M\">\n<div class=\"vmZ F8Y ap2\" style=\"padding-top:74.9584%\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgix.bustle.com\/uploads\/image\/2026\/10\/30\/c8afddb9\/sean-davidson_8.jpg?w=414&amp;h=310&amp;fit=crop&amp;crop=faces&amp;dpr=2\" alt class=\"EdX\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Yte pt7 okb\"><figcaption class=\"rv9 TrI\"><cite class=\"hW6\">Courtesy of Sean Davidson<\/cite><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Designed by <a class=\"T3D\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/aunt_studio\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Aunt Studio<\/a>, the space retains traces of its past lives as a French bar, acupuncture clinic, and mechanic shop. Original scuffed floors, painted brick, and exposed ceilings remain, while earthen red plaster connects the different rooms. Blue tabletops inspired by Mexican cantinas, furniture made in Mexico, and artwork Campillo has collected during his travels bring some of his personal history into the space.<\/p>\n<p>And no night out is complete without a plate or two. The fried chicken, for instance, has proved a little tricky to navigate, thanks to its generous accompaniment of aioli. It\u2019s a distinctly LA hospitality dilemma: How do you serve a proper meal without asking someone to sacrifice their outfit?<\/p>\n<p>As Tondo strengthens its footing in LA\u2019s nightlife orbit, the question is how to keep the momentum going. \u201cYou already proved your point and your concept works, but now you have to maintain it,\u201d says Escuby. \u201cI hope Tondo is one of those places that lasts the testament of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Campillo, though, there are moments when he can simply enjoy what they\u2019ve already built. On a recent packed Saturday night, he watched as the crowd spilled from the caf\u00e9 into the parking lot and deck. \u201cIt\u2019s like exhaling a cigarette,\u201d he says. \u201cBecause a lot of time and energy went into doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He takes another drag, watching the room fill back up as the next DJ gets ready to take over.
