Grateful in a ‘once in a career’ kind of way. Right from our first meeting, he made it known that the only reason to play Picard again was to break new ground. His challenge was clear: Picard needed to be the man we knew and loved, but also entirely different, just as Patrick himself was 30 years after last wearing the uniform. The world of the Federation had to feel fresh and mirror many of the big issues the world faces today, issues that he wanted to face as a human and an artist, which meant interrogating an ideal to expose something more honest. He demanded truth. And in perhaps the trickiest high wire act, he wanted to reward fans with the nostalgia they would rightly demand, while subverting their expectations.”

View this post on Instagram

Stewart’s Next Generation cast members also paid tribute, with Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher) posting a photograph of the two with the caption: “Godspeed, Captain.”

Elsewhere, Will Riker actor Jonathan Frakes released a statement that read: “There’s no one on this planet that I have acted with or directed more often than my late great friend Patrick Stewart. class="articleBody" data-key="articleBody">Tributes from across Hollywood and beyond are pouring in following the news of the death of legendary actor Sir Patrick Stewart, who died at the age of 86.The celebrated actor, a two-time Olivier Award winner and multiple-time Tony, Golden Globes, and SAG Awards nominee, died following a “brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia”.Stewart was a commanding and charismatic performer who brought gravitas to all his roles – be it Shakespeare or a starship captain on Star Trek: The Next Generation and a mutant telepath in the X-Men series. He will be remembered for his roles as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Professor Charles Xavier, Enobarbus in “Antony and Cleopatra”, Claudius opposite David Tennant’s Hamlet, as well as his memorable turns in John Boorman’s Excalibur, David Lynch’s Dune, Mel Brooks’ Robin Hood: Men in Tights, and as the soft-spoken neo-Nazi leader in Jeremy Saulnier’s Green Room. The official Star Trek social media account thanked Patrick Stewart. “A voice. A presence. A captain unlike any other,” the account says, adding: “Sir Patrick Stewart gave generations of fans an icon who inspired us to look toward the stars. Today, we celebrate an extraordinary life and an enduring legacy.”His fellow USS Enterprise captain William Shatner wrote: “What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work. My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.”George Takei, who starred in Star Trek: The Original Series with Shatner, wrote on Bluesky: “Fans across the world mourn the passing of a true and irreplaceable legend. As Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart took the starship Enterprise to places it had never gone before. He inspired a whole next generation of star-gazers who looked longingly ahead to a brighter future for all humanity. Our hearts are heavy, indeed. Rest in the heavens, Captain.”Alex Kurtzman, who co-created “Star Trek: Picard”, wrote: “It’s hard, impossible really, to express how grateful I am to have shared this moment with him. And in perhaps the trickiest high wire act, he wanted to reward fans with the nostalgia they would rightly demand, while subverting their expectations.”Stewart’s Next Generation cast members also paid tribute, with Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher) posting a photograph of the two with the caption: “Godspeed, Captain.”Elsewhere, Will Riker actor Jonathan Frakes released a statement that read: “There’s no one on this planet that I have acted with or directed more often than my late great friend Patrick Stewart. He will be with me forever. May he rest in Peace.” Marvel Studios also paid tribute to Stewart, saying he brought Charles Xavier to life with “extraordinary grace, intelligence, and humanity, defining the character for generations of fans, from X-Men to Logan to Avengers: Doomsday.”“He was a singular talent, a generous collaborator, and a true gentleman. Our hearts go out to his wife Sunny, his children, his friends, and the countless fans around the world whose lives he touched with his art.”Actor Hugh Jackman, who starred alongside Stewart in the X-Men films as Logan/Wolverine, described him as a “tremendous friend and man”. In a post on Instagram, he wrote: “We lost one of the greats of stage and screen today.””I learned so much from him. I will miss you, Patrick Stewart, all of my days.”Rebecca Romijn, who played Mystique in X-Men said: “I feel so grateful to have known him for the last 25 years, and to have been in his orbit.””He was positively delicious, hilarious, naughty, incredible sense of humour,” Romijn added, “and that booming vice of his that always spoke to the back of the room…”A particularly heartfelt tribute came from Sir Ian McKellen, with whom Stewart shared a longtime friendship, the screen in the X-Men films, and the stage with performances in “Waiting for Godot” and “No Man’s Land.”McKellen described Stewart as the “most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic”.In a statement shared on social media, McKellen described him as “a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love”.The two frequently expressed their affection for each other, with McKellen officiating Stewart’s wedding in 2013.“Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end,” McKellen wrote. “You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues.”McKellen remembered trying to talk Stewart out of accepting the role of Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek, asking: “But Patrick, think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”Stewart took the part anyway. “Thank goodness for us all that he did,” McKellen said, going on to praise his friend who used his “international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes”, as well as classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Harold Pinter and Samuel Beckett.McKellen wrote that despite the US becoming his “adopted home”, the actor “never forsook his origins”.“And the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire,” he wrote.McKellen will share the screen with Stewart one last time for his the actor’s final performance as Professor Charles Xavier in Avengers: Doomsday, which will be released on 18 December.RIP Sir Patrick. As he said as Picard: “Make now always the most precious time. Now will never come again.”

[analyse_source url=”https://www.euronews.com/2026/10/30/godspeed-captain-heartfelt-tributes-pour-in-for-sir-patrick-stewart”]

[analyse_image type=”featured” src=”https://images.euronews.com/articles/stories/09/97/30/05/1200x675_cmsv2_876fafe9-0f1d-5b53-be93-11d198949d40-9973005.jpg”] No Comment DR Congo: MSF celebrates Ebola patient discharges in Ituri province Europe Today ‘A living hell’: Oleshky captures the world’s attention Israel Netanyahu bloc short of majority as Arab parties secure record seats Art Knot for eating: Welcome to the Italian restaurant where every meal is knitted Culture Culture news ‘Godspeed, […]

[90
226,36
post-2227882","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-international","tag-crawlmanager","tag-euronews-com
["GET
