It&apos;s also among his longest, chronicling a battle between a group of social outcasts and a demonic entity haunting the town of Derry, Maine across multiple time periods. It never really forges a firm connection to the Dark Tower books, but it&apos;s still worth reading for two reasons. One, it&apos;s an essential King novel that many regard as one of his best. But in terms of the adaptation itself, it\u2019s relatively straightforward. That\u2019s because Flanagan has taken the approach of faithfully adapting the books, almost to a fault, leaning heavily on the story King himself told.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cThat one I feel like I figured out,\u201d Flanagan said in a recent interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/khjwgdVs_Wg?si=QhCGsbawDNT2nF2p\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>The Process Unlocked<\/u><\/a>. &#8220;You do the books.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">That sounds obvious, but it is not the path previous The Dark Tower adaptations have followed \u2014 much to the disappointment of fans. The 2017 movie, starring Idris Elba as Roland Deschain and Matthew McConaughey as his nemesis, Walter Padick, was panned by critics. Flanagan has said of the film: \u201cWe can\u2019t let that be the final word. We really can\u2019t.\u201d <\/p>\n<div class=\"jsx-2277167929 video jsx-2008855984 aspect-ratio aspect-ratio-16-9\">\n<div class=\"badge jsx-1349606671 jsx-3647116352\"><span class=\"ign-icon icon-play jsx-2750866048 jsx-1044454891\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"false\" data-cy=\"icon-play\" aria-label=\"Play\" style=\"mask:url(https:\/\/kraken.ignimgs.com\/_next\/static\/media\/Play.59e5540b.svg?cors=1) no-repeat center center \/ contain;background:currentColor\"><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">The big idea, Flanagan has said, is for five seasons of The Dark Tower followed by two standalone movies. Or, put more simply by Flanagan in this new interview: \u201cjust doing the books and doing them in order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cStephen King is genius in how he structures The Dark Tower because he starts this giant worldbuilding potentially, overwhelming story with two people in a landscape without detail. It&#8217;s the simplest start,\u201d Flanagan explained.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cIt&#8217;s one of the most perfect lines of any book: &#8216;The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed.&#8217; It is two characters. There&#8217;s a clear objective. One is running away, one is pursuing, and it&#8217;s a desert. There is nothing else to look at. It&#8217;s so simple and so clean and on top of that foundation, he adds a universe one brick at a time.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cAnd so that&#8217;s the way to do it. The problem with the other approaches is people who try to jump in in the middle or people who try to jump in at a different point, because you can&#8217;t throw an audience face first into this huge universe. It&#8217;s overwhelming. And King did it right. He walked you in, started with two people and nothing else and walks you in one step at a time. So my adaptation was that, it was just doing the books and doing them in order. And there&#8217;s little changes you make to fit the the format, but my Dark Tower approach is remarkably faithful. And so 70% of my job is done for me by Steve. So it&#8217;s not that difficult. You know, the difficult thing is just figuring out how to get in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">The question is, will Flanagan get the chance to realize his vision? The Dark Tower is not a part of Flanagan\u2019s big Amazon deal, although he has suggested Prime Video could get behind it eventually. Next up for the horror specialist is an Amazon TV show adaptation of Warhammer 40,000, <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/mike-flanagan-explains-why-warhammer-40000-is-a-brutally-difficult-adaptation\">which he\u2019s said is much harder to adapt than The Dark Tower<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">So while Flanagan\u2019s plan for The Dark Tower sounds great, if it ever does come to pass, it will be many years from now.<\/p>\n<p><span But in terms of the adaptation itself, it\u2019s relatively straightforward. That\u2019s because Flanagan has taken the approach of faithfully adapting the books, almost to a fault, leaning heavily on the story King himself told.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cThat one I feel like I figured out,\u201d Flanagan said in a recent interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/khjwgdVs_Wg?si=QhCGsbawDNT2nF2p\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>The Process Unlocked<\/u><\/a>. &#8220;You do the books.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">That sounds obvious, but it is not the path previous The Dark Tower adaptations have followed \u2014 much to the disappointment of fans. The 2017 movie, starring Idris Elba as Roland Deschain and Matthew McConaughey as his nemesis, Walter Padick, was panned by critics. Flanagan has said of the film: \u201cWe can\u2019t let that be the final word. Or, put more simply by Flanagan in this new interview: \u201cjust doing the books and doing them in order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cStephen King is genius in how he structures The Dark Tower because he starts this giant worldbuilding potentially, overwhelming story with two people in a landscape without detail. It&#8217;s the simplest start,\u201d Flanagan explained.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cIt&#8217;s one of the most perfect lines of any book: &#8216;The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed.&#8217; It is two characters. There&#8217;s a clear objective. One is running away, one is pursuing, and it&#8217;s a desert. There is nothing else to look at. It&#8217;s so simple and so clean and on top of that foundation, he adds a universe one brick at a time.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cAnd so that&#8217;s the way to do it. The problem with the other approaches is people who try to jump in in the middle or people who try to jump in at a different point, because you can&#8217;t throw an audience face first into this huge universe. It&#8217;s overwhelming. And King did it right. He walked you in, started with two people and nothing else and walks you in one step at a time. So my adaptation was that, it was just doing the books and doing them in order. And there&#8217;s little changes you make to fit the the format, but my Dark Tower approach is remarkably faithful. And so 70% of my job is done for me by Steve. So it&#8217;s not that difficult. You know, the difficult thing is just figuring out how to get in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">The question is, will Flanagan get the chance to realize his vision? The Dark Tower is not a part of Flanagan\u2019s big Amazon deal, although he has suggested Prime Video could get behind it eventually. Next up for the horror specialist is an Amazon TV show adaptation of Warhammer 40,000, <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\"
