regions averaging 21.1\u00b0C on 22 August. With El Ni\u00f1o still intensifying in the Pacific, it is unlikely temperatures will drop dramatically in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>But even under the \u201cmost extreme ocean cooling conditions imagined\u201d, new research led by British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has found that the Doomsday Glacier, located in West Antarctica, will continue losing ice for at least the next 150 years.<\/p>\n<p>The total collapse of the ice sheet would contribute an estimated 65cm to global sea level rise. To put that into perspective, for every centimetre of sea level rise around an additional six million people on the planet are exposed to coastal flooding.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Unavoidable future ice loss\u2019 for Doomsday Glacier<\/h2>\n<p>Researchers ran a modelling experiment for Thwaites Glacier and its neighbour Pine Island Glacier, which are currently the largest contributors to ice loss from this area of Antarctica.<\/p>\n<p>They completely switched off the melting effects of the ocean \u2013 driven by climate change \u2013 beneath both glaciers in three independent computer models. <\/p>\n<p>Published in the science journal Geophysical Research Letters, the study revealed a \u201cstriking difference\u201d between how the two glaciers fared over a 150-year period. <\/p>\n<div class=\"c-widget-related\" data-stories-id data-event=\"widget_related\">\n<div class=\"c-widget-related__title\"><b class=\"c-widget-related__title__text\" lang=\"en\">Related<\/b><\/div>\n<ul class=\"c-widget-related__list\" id=\"abe-article-related-1\">\n<li class=\"c-widget-related__item\">\u2018Doomsday Glacier\u2019 is melting faster than we thought. Under the modelling, the ice sheet stopped melting and began thickening \u2013 advancing back towards the position it held in the first half of the 20th century.<\/p>\n<p>However, Thwaites Glacier continued to lose ice, even without any ocean melting. With El Ni\u00f1o still intensifying in the Pacific, it is unlikely temperatures will drop dramatically in the near future.But even under the \u201cmost extreme ocean cooling conditions imagined\u201d, new research led by British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has found that the Doomsday Glacier, located in West Antarctica, will continue losing ice for at least the next 150 years.The total collapse of the ice sheet would contribute an estimated 65cm to global sea level rise. To put that into perspective, for every centimetre of sea level rise around an additional six million people on the planet are exposed to coastal flooding.\u2018Unavoidable future ice loss\u2019 for Doomsday GlacierResearchers ran a modelling experiment for Thwaites Glacier and its neighbour Pine Island Glacier, which are currently the largest contributors to ice loss from this area of Antarctica.They completely switched off the melting effects of the ocean \u2013 driven by climate change \u2013 beneath both glaciers in three independent computer models.\u00a0Published in the science journal Geophysical Research Letters, the study revealed a \u201cstriking difference\u201d between how the two glaciers fared over a 150-year period.\u00a0Pine Island Glacier responded as scientists might have expected. Under the modelling, the ice sheet stopped melting and began thickening \u2013 advancing back towards the position it held in the first half of the 20th century.However, Thwaites Glacier continued to lose ice, even without any ocean melting.
