health risks on the job, yet the subject remains taboo.<br \/>\n    <\/h2>\n<div class=\"c-article-content c-article-content--health js-article-content\">\n<p>Health and safety is the backbone of working life. However, as workplaces and working practices evolve, new challenges emerge while old ones remain unsolved. <\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-mobile-only\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\" alt loading=\"lazy\"><span>ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-desktop\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\" alt loading=\"lazy\"><span>ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Against a backdrop of staff shortages and ageing populations, Europe\u2019s workforce is battling poor mental health; however, the issue is still not being recognised at workplaces, William Cockburn, EU-OSHA executive director, told Euronews. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether we&#8217;re asking employers or workers, they identify a reluctance to speak openly about mental health issues as the \u2026 main obstacle to actually taking action,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Many EU employees say their jobs are hurting their mental health. Nearly half of workers (45%) face risks to their mental health on the job, according to the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA). <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see psychosocial risks at the workplace, for example, long working hours, highly intense work, emotionally demanding tasks \u2026 and we link that to increased impact on workers\u2019 health,\u201d Cockburn said. <\/p>\n<p>Around 44% of workers report severe time pressure or overload. According to the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI), work-related depression costs the EU more than \u20ac100 billion a year, when absenteeism, reduced productivity, and healthcare and wider social costs are combined. <\/p>\n<p>Despite the burden these conditions place on employers, Cockburn said a reluctance to talk and persistent stigma among workers are slowing action. <\/p>\n<p>So, what can be done about it?<\/p>\n<p>For Cockburn, mental health issues \u201cneed to be addressed like physical health issues at work\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The approach, he noted, is to assess the risks first and then adapt whatever is needed to minimise harm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe identify hazards like long working hours, like adverse relationships at work \u2026 to an extreme you can go to bullying and harassment, violence or threats of violence,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<div class=\"c-widget-related\" data-stories-id data-event=\"widget_related\">\n<div class=\"c-widget-related__title\"><b class=\"c-widget-related__title__text\" lang=\"en\">Related<\/b><\/div>\n<ul class=\"c-widget-related__list\" id=\"abe-article-related-1\">\n<li class=\"c-widget-related__item\">Burnout at work: MEPs call for stronger EU protections<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Workers should be part of the conversation<\/h2>\n<p>While many see mental health as a personal issue, Esther Lynch, general secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), argues that prevention should focus on the workplace rather than on the individual affected. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#8217;t wait until people have a finger chopped off before we put guardrails in place,\u201d Lynch said. \u201cWe do a risk assessment and say what&#8217;s the risk associated with the way this work is carried out and then we put the guardrails in place\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>To achieve this, experts agree, workers must be part of the conversation. Yet only 45% say they are consulted about the stressful aspects of their jobs, according to EU-OSHA. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorker participation is a legal obligation under European law, but it&#8217;s also a key success factor for successful interventions in health and safety at work,\u201d said Cockburn. <\/p>\n<p>This week, the European Commission launched the Healthy Workplaces campaign, an initiative to help employers prevent, assess and manage psychosocial risks at work. However, as workplaces and working practices evolve, new challenges emerge while old ones remain unsolved.\u00a0\u00a0Against a backdrop of staff shortages and ageing populations, Europe\u2019s workforce is battling poor mental health; however, the issue is still not being recognised at workplaces, William Cockburn, EU-OSHA executive director, told Euronews.\u00a0\u201cWhether we&#8217;re asking employers or workers, they identify a reluctance to speak openly about mental health issues as the \u2026 main obstacle to actually taking action,\u201d he said.Many EU employees say their jobs are hurting their mental health. Nearly half of workers (45%) face risks to their mental health on the job, according to the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA).\u00a0\u201cWe see psychosocial risks at the workplace, for example, long working hours, highly intense work, emotionally demanding tasks \u2026 and we link that to increased impact on workers\u2019 health,\u201d Cockburn said.\u00a0Around 44% of workers report severe time pressure or overload. According to the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI), work-related depression costs the EU more than \u20ac100 billion a year, when absenteeism, reduced productivity, and healthcare and wider social costs are combined.\u00a0Despite the burden these conditions place on employers, Cockburn said a reluctance to talk and persistent stigma among workers are slowing action.\u00a0So, what can be done about it?For Cockburn, mental health issues \u201cneed to be addressed like physical health issues at work\u201d.The approach, he noted, is to assess the risks first and then adapt whatever is needed to minimise harm.\u201cWe identify hazards like long working hours, like adverse relationships at work \u2026 to an extreme you can go to bullying and harassment, violence or threats of violence,\u201d he added.\u00a0Workers should be part of the conversationWhile many see mental health as a personal issue, Esther Lynch, general secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), argues that prevention should focus on the workplace rather than on the individual affected.\u00a0\u201cWe don&#8217;t wait until people have a finger chopped off before we put guardrails in place,\u201d\u00a0 Lynch said. \u201cWe do a risk assessment and say what&#8217;s the risk associated with the way this work is carried out and then we put the guardrails in place\u201d.\u00a0To achieve this, experts agree, workers must be part of the conversation. Yet only 45% say they are consulted about the stressful aspects of their jobs, according to EU-OSHA.\u00a0\u201cWorker participation is a legal obligation under European law, but it&#8217;s also a key success factor for successful interventions in health and safety at work,\u201d said Cockburn.\u00a0This week, the European Commission launched the Healthy Workplaces campaign, an initiative to help employers prevent, assess and manage psychosocial risks at work.
