href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ambroise.degenne\/\">Ambroise Degenne<\/a> and his best friend overheard the phrase \u201cchunky milk\u201d. They assumed it meant spoiled milk and spent the entire evening joking about it. When he came to name his first photo book, the words came back to him, only they meant something far more personal. \u201cThe title feels even more meaningful now because my best friend has been going through some tough times and, sadly, we don\u2019t see each other as much as we used to; so, the title serves as a little nod to her,\u201d he says. \u201cA sense of time passing is also important to me in my photographs, so the idea of \u2018spoiled milk\u2019 felt fitting for this collection of images.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/burbia.studio\/\">Burbia Studio<\/a> in an edition of 150, <\/span><em><span>Chunky Milk <\/span><\/em><span>has the loose, instinctive rhythm of someone who carries a camera everywhere and stops whenever a person or composition snags their attention. Made largely in Paris and on his travels between 2025 and early 2026, you\u2019ll see moments between strangers, graffiti sprayed on building facades, days spent lounging in bedrooms, smoking cigs out the window and clinking beers with friends \u2013 all caught in an unflashy, documentary-learning style. \u201cI don\u2019t really plan out my days, so I never quite know who I\u2019ll see or where I\u2019ll go,\u201d Degenne says. \u201cI like being able to photograph those unexpected moments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Born in Paris in 2007, Degenne grew up facing a railway line, spending afternoons at the living-room window watching painted trains pass and copying their graffiti into sketchbooks. He wondered about \u201cthe people who defied the rules to express their art\u201d \u2013 and, by age eight, he\u2019d joined them. At home, he was inspired by his father\u2019s jungle and drum &amp; bass records featuring artist names and label logos in lettering resembling graffiti tags. \u201cNaturally, I soon started getting involved myself,\u201d he says, \u201cvisiting graffiti shops to find magazines and books dedicated to the culture.\u201d What he found were publications including <\/span><em><span>Subway Art, Descente Interdite, French Kiss, Wild War <\/span><\/em><span>and <\/span><em><span>Thunder Control.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"2c5e4ac1-9274-48dd-9dd9-b4e2010a00e9\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1450\/7\/1457490.jpeg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.51\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ambroise Degenne, Chunky Milk (2026)\" class=\"img\" height=\"1357\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1450\/7\/1457490.jpeg\" width=\"2048\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Ambroise Degenne<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Photography began as a way of archiving his own paintings, until people from the scene introduced him to Dash Snow, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/ari-marcopoulos\">Ari Marcopoulos<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/ryan-mcginley\">Ryan McGinley<\/a>, chroniclers of raw, unvarnished youth subculture. These days, he\u2019s drawn to photographers who turn an observational, anti-spectacular gaze on the everyday: Guido Guidi, whose work lingers on the unglamorous margins of the Italian landscape; Luigi Ghirri, whose pictures make deadpan poems of signs and walls; and Lewis Baltz, whose imagery finds cool, orderly grids in suburbs and industrial parks. Ambroise brings a similar unshowy attention to the landscapes of Paris. \u201cSometimes it\u2019s a sign, a bench or even a section of a wall that catches my eye, without me fully understanding why I feel such an urge to photograph it,\u201d he says. \u201cPhotography has become an obsession, replacing the one I previously had for graffiti.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And while the graffiti still features heavily throughout the book, giving it context and grit, it\u2019s the people who add a sense of warmth through the pages. In one frame, taken in New York in April 2025, his friend Tenzin lies half-awake in bed, towers filling the window behind him and a laptop abandoned on the floor. It was Ambroise\u2019s first trip to the city alone, and he spent ten days sleeping fully dressed on a deflated mattress in Tenzin\u2019s living room, beside a window that wouldn\u2019t close properly. \u201cI was exhausted and sick; all I could think about was getting back to my own bed in Paris,\u201d he recalls. \u201cTo me, this photo sums up the end of that trip.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"91e92c4d-57ad-46ea-8102-b4e2010b90b8\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1450\/7\/1457500.JPG\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.51\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ambroise Degenne, Chunky Milk (2026)\" class=\"img\" height=\"1988\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1450\/7\/1457500.JPG\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"caption\">Portrait of <span class=\"nowrap\">Ambroise Degenne<\/span><\/span><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of <span class=\"nowrap\">the artist<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Elsewhere, Nelson sits in a green jumper, head tilted, in his girlfriend\u2019s Paris apartment. <\/span>Degenne <span>met him at 13, and he has become a kind of older brother; he was there when Degenne painted his first subway train. \u201cI grew up alongside him,\u201d he says. \u201cHe taught me so much, always treating me with respect and never looking down on me.\u201d Then there\u2019s a flash-lit wedding in Tokyo last October, where one half of the couple holds up a peace sign in a white glove and the other wears a long veil like a scarf. Ambroise hardly knew the newlyweds, Sorat and Barry McGee, when he landed for his first trip to Japan, but after a few days of surfing in the south, they became friends. \u201cIt is largely thanks to them that I began exploring painting and drawing beyond graffiti.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>These are not just subjects but the people through whom Degenne has lived this stretch of his life. \u201cBeyond friendship, they intrigue and inspire me! I suppose I\u2019m a bit of a fan of theirs,\u201d he says. \u201cSome are people I worry about, others I don\u2019t yet know very well, and some are people I see every day. Together, they feel like a second family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The first version of <\/span><em><span>Chunky Milk <\/span><\/em><span>was made for his entrance interviews at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he now studies Fine Art, and shaping it into a book has changed how he sees his pictures. \u201cI used to think my photos could stand on their own \u2013 an idea that seems completely absurd to me now,\u201d he says. He already suspects he\u2019ll see this edition differently in a few months. But for someone who calls himself \u201cpretty hopeless with technology\u201d, print offers a kind of safekeeping. <\/span><em><span>Chunky Milk, <\/span><\/em><span>then, is a book about time, and a small act of defiance against it \u2013 and unlike the real thing, the pages won\u2019t go bad if left too long in the fridge. \u201cI\u2019ve always loved seeing my work in print, as something tangible,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve always appreciated the physicality of things; that\u2019s one of the reasons I use analogue photography as a medium. So, in a way, now that <\/span><em><span>Chunky Milk <\/span><\/em><span>exists, I feel like these photos will remain alive forever.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Chunky Milk<em><span> by Ambroise Degenne is published by Burbia Studio and will be available <a href=\"https:\/\/burbia.studio\/\">here<\/a>. They assumed it meant spoiled milk and spent the entire evening joking about it. When he came to name his first photo book, the words came back to him, only they meant something far more personal. \u201cThe title feels even more meaningful now because my best friend has been going through some tough times and, sadly, we don\u2019t see each other as much as we used to; so, the title serves as a little nod to her,\u201d he says. \u201cA sense of time passing is also important to me in my photographs, so the idea of \u2018spoiled milk\u2019 felt fitting for this collection of images.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/burbia.studio\/\">Burbia Studio<\/a> in an edition of 150, <\/span><em><span>Chunky Milk <\/span><\/em><span>has the loose, instinctive rhythm of someone who carries a camera everywhere and stops whenever a person or composition snags their attention. Made largely in Paris and on his travels between 2025 and early 2026, you\u2019ll see moments between strangers, graffiti sprayed on building facades, days spent lounging in bedrooms, smoking cigs out the window and clinking beers with friends \u2013 all caught in an unflashy, documentary-learning style. \u201cI don\u2019t really plan out my days, so I never quite know who I\u2019ll see or where I\u2019ll go,\u201d Degenne says. \u201cI like being able to photograph those unexpected moments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Born in Paris in 2007, Degenne grew up facing a railway line, spending afternoons at the living-room window watching painted trains pass and copying their graffiti into sketchbooks. He wondered about \u201cthe people who defied the rules to express their art\u201d \u2013 and, by age eight, he\u2019d joined them. These days, he\u2019s drawn to photographers who turn an observational, anti-spectacular gaze on the everyday: Guido Guidi, whose work lingers on the unglamorous margins of the Italian landscape; Luigi Ghirri, whose pictures make deadpan poems of signs and walls; and Lewis Baltz, whose imagery finds cool, orderly grids in suburbs and industrial parks. Ambroise brings a similar unshowy attention to the landscapes of Paris. \u201cSometimes it\u2019s a sign, a bench or even a section of a wall that catches my eye, without me fully understanding why I feel such an urge to photograph it,\u201d he says. \u201cPhotography has become an obsession, replacing the one I previously had for graffiti.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And while the graffiti still features heavily throughout the book, giving it context and grit, it\u2019s the people who add a sense of warmth through the pages. In one frame, taken in New York in April 2025, his friend Tenzin lies half-awake in bed, towers filling the window behind him and a laptop abandoned on the floor. It was Ambroise\u2019s first trip to the city alone, and he spent ten days sleeping fully dressed on a deflated mattress in Tenzin\u2019s living room, beside a window that wouldn\u2019t close properly. \u201cI was exhausted and sick; all I could think about was getting back to my own bed in Paris,\u201d he recalls. \u201cTo me, this photo sums up the end of that trip.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"91e92c4d-57ad-46ea-8102-b4e2010b90b8\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1450\/7\/1457500.JPG\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.51\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ambroise Degenne, Chunky Milk (2026)\" class=\"img\" height=\"1988\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1450\/7\/1457500.JPG\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"caption\">Portrait of <span class=\"nowrap\">Ambroise Degenne<\/span><\/span><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of <span class=\"nowrap\">the artist<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Elsewhere, Nelson sits in a green jumper, head tilted, in his girlfriend\u2019s Paris apartment. <\/span>Degenne <span>met him at 13, and he has become a kind of older brother; he was there when Degenne painted his first subway train. \u201cI grew up alongside him,\u201d he says. \u201cHe taught me so much, always treating me with respect and never looking down on me.\u201d Then there\u2019s a flash-lit wedding in Tokyo last October, where one half of the couple holds up a peace sign in a white glove and the other wears a long veil like a scarf. Ambroise hardly knew the newlyweds, Sorat and Barry McGee, when he landed for his first trip to Japan, but after a few days of surfing in the south, they became friends. \u201cIt is largely thanks to them that I began exploring painting and drawing beyond graffiti.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>These are not just subjects but the people through whom Degenne has lived this stretch of his life. \u201cBeyond friendship, they intrigue and inspire me! I suppose I\u2019m a bit of a fan of theirs,\u201d he says. \u201cSome are people I worry about, others I don\u2019t yet know very well, and some are people I see every day. Together, they feel like a second family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The first version of <\/span><em><span>Chunky Milk <\/span><\/em><span>was made for his entrance interviews at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he now studies Fine Art, and shaping it into a book has changed how he sees his pictures. \u201cI used to think my photos could stand on their own \u2013 an idea that seems completely absurd to me now,\u201d he says. He already suspects he\u2019ll see this edition differently in a few months. But for someone who calls himself \u201cpretty hopeless with technology\u201d, print offers a kind of safekeeping. <\/span><em><span>Chunky Milk, <\/span><\/em><span>then, is a book about time, and a small act of defiance against it \u2013 and unlike the real thing, the pages won\u2019t go bad if left too long in the fridge. \u201cI\u2019ve always loved seeing my work in print, as something tangible,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve always appreciated the physicality of things; that\u2019s one of the reasons I use analogue photography as a medium.
