away from being able to copy and spread themselves onto internet-of-things devices such as smart ovens and TVs, making them difficult to stop should they decide to carry out cyberattacks.<br \/>\n    <\/h2>\n<div class=\"c-article-content c-article-content--next js-article-content\">\n<p>Anthropic announced this week that small AI models are just months away from being able to self-replicate themselves on internet-of-things devices such as smart ovens and TVs.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-mobile-only\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" something goes wrong.<\/p>\n<p>A model scattered across thousands of poorly secured gadgets in homes and offices would have no such off switch. Stopping it would mean tracking down and cleaning every infected device, making it extremely hard to halt if it turned to cyberattacks.<\/p>\n<p>The latest announcement comes in a year that has seen the world\u2019s leading AI models and their agents repeatedly bypass their safety nets or guardrails, mounting attacks on competing companies and government agencies around the world.<\/p>\n<p>While this is one way a rogue AI could spread, Anthropic warned that a self-replicating AI could also be a \u201cpowerful cyber model that breaches data centres at high pace, or a model that scams people for compute credits\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The company says it cannot say for certain what form exactly autonomous AI replication will take.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-widget-related\" data-stories-id data-event=\"widget_related\">\n<div class=\"c-widget-related__title\"><b class=\"c-widget-related__title__text\" lang=\"en\">Related<\/b><\/div>\n<ul class=\"c-widget-related__list\" id=\"abe-article-related-1\">\n<li class=\"c-widget-related__item\">Got a rogue AI? A new hotline is encouraging agents to tell on each other<\/li>\n<li class=\"c-widget-related__item\">Rogue AI agents tried and failed to hack US and Canadian government websites<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Models with 30 billion parameters or fewer can already complete many of the steps needed to replicate, though they make mistakes when stringing them together end to end, according to Anthropic.<\/p>\n<p>But if small models keep improving at their current historical rate, they will be able to match this capability by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Anthropic says the cyberthreat posed by self-replicating AI is an unintended consequence of progress elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe capabilities that make AI models generally powerful coding agents also generalize to cyber tasks, including autonomous replication,\u201d the company said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Code that copies itself from one computer to another is nothing new. Some of the most damaging cyberattacks in history have relied on this kind of self-spreading program, known as a worm.<\/p>\n<p>The 2010 Stuxnet attack used a sophisticated worm, widely believed to have been built by the US and Israel, to sabotage centrifuges at Iran\u2019s Natanz uranium enrichment plant. <\/p>\n<p>In 2017, the WannaCry ransomware attack locked users around the world out of their files and demanded ransoms in Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike these worms, however, AI models and agents will be able to work out unfamiliar devices on their own. as smart ovens and TVs.That matters because today\u2019s AI models operate in data centres, where the companies that own them can pull the plug if something goes wrong.A model scattered across thousands of poorly secured gadgets in homes and offices would have no such off switch. Stopping it would mean tracking down and cleaning every infected device, making it extremely hard to halt if it turned to cyberattacks.The latest announcement comes in a year that has seen the world\u2019s leading AI models and their agents repeatedly bypass their safety nets or guardrails, mounting attacks on competing companies and government agencies around the world.While this is one way a rogue AI could spread, Anthropic warned that a self-replicating AI could also be a \u201cpowerful cyber model that breaches data centres at high pace, or a model that scams people for compute credits\u201d.The company says it cannot say for certain what form exactly autonomous AI replication will take.Models with 30 billion parameters or fewer can already complete many of the steps needed to replicate, though they make mistakes when stringing them together end to end, according to Anthropic.But if small models keep improving at their current historical rate, they will be able to match this capability by the end of the year.Anthropic says the cyberthreat posed by self-replicating AI is an unintended consequence of progress elsewhere.\u201cThe capabilities that make AI models generally powerful coding agents also generalize to cyber tasks, including autonomous replication,\u201d the company said in a statement.Code that copies itself from one computer to another is nothing new. Some of the most damaging cyberattacks in history have relied on this kind of self-spreading program, known as a worm.The 2010 Stuxnet attack used a sophisticated worm, widely believed to have been built by the US and Israel, to sabotage centrifuges at Iran\u2019s Natanz uranium enrichment plant.In 2017, the WannaCry ransomware attack locked users around the world out of their files and demanded ransoms in Bitcoin.Unlike these worms, however, AI models and agents will be able to work out unfamiliar devices on their own.
