An Instagram post from the account miagoth_ \u2014 marked with a blue verified checkmark \u2014 quickly spread.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The post shows Goth in a T-shirt that reads \u201cMY EX IS MY BIGGEST FAN\u201d in bold black letters. The Beyonc\u00e9 song \u201cSingle Ladies (Put a Ring on It)\u201d had been added to the Instagram post. Hundreds of thousands of people \u2014 including some in the entertainment industry \u2014 liked the image, and entertainment outlets like <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aol.com\/articles\/mia-goth-takes-swipe-ex-111940000.html\">OK!<\/a><\/em> and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aol.com\/articles\/mia-goth-poses-ex-biggest-193758000.html\"><em>People<\/em><\/a> wrote about it as if it were authentic. Soon, screenshots of the post were shared widely on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/LADbible\/posts\/mia-goth-has-pictured-herself-wearing-a-t-shirt-which-reads-my-ex-is-my-biggest-\/1525152449646637\/\">other social media platforms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">But the image, Goth\u2019s representatives say, was AI-generated, posted by an account they had asked Instagram to remove.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cMia Goth does not have ownership of, nor does she engage in social media on any platform. We have filed multiple complaints with Instagram to remove the verified fan account which continues to post counterfeit, AI images of Mia Goth,\u201d Christine Tripicchio, a representative for Goth, told <em>The Verge<\/em> in an email. \u201cThe fact that this fan account meets Instagram\u2019s criteria to qualify for a \u2018blue check\u2019 is disconcerting on a fundamental level. Meta <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/2\/19\/23606268\/meta-instagram-facebook-test-paid-verification\">began selling<\/a> blue checkmarks several years ago as part of a new program, allowing accounts like the fan page to secure \u201cverified\u201d badges even if they weren\u2019t run by the person being depicted in content.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Meta didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment. As of Tuesday morning, the miagoth_ account appears to be wiped from Instagram.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Rather than ban AI-generated content of real people, Meta has taken the approach of labeling some content created with generative AI. Photorealistic AI videos of people, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meta.com\/help\/artificial-intelligence\/1783222608822690\/\">may require<\/a> an AI label \u2014 but Meta\u2019s own rules include a carve-out that the label is not required for still images.
