Not satisfied with having several grands prix in highly questionable parts of the world, F1 has said \u2018hold my Amnesty International report\u2019 and announced a new African Grand Prix in\u2026 Rwanda. Because of course.<\/p>\n

Expected to join the calendar \u2018in the early 2030s\u2019, it\u2019ll be the first race hosted on the continent since Kyalami held the South African Grand Prix in 1993.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It\u2019ll take place at a brand new circuit that\u2019ll be built in Bugesera, some 25 miles away from the capital Kigali and \u2018adjacent to\u2019 its new international airport.<\/p>\n

The track \u2013 which you can see rendered in the image up top \u2013 has been designed by former F1 driver Alex Wurz, and is \u201cdesigned to work in harmony with the natural landscape, using the area\u2019s elevation changes to create a unique and challenging racing experience while delivering exceptional viewing opportunities for fans”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Once up and running, the African Grand Prix will be on the calendar for 10 years. We don\u2019t yet know where the race will slot into the schedule.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday is a landmark moment for Formula 1,\u201d said F1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali. \u201cWith Rwanda joining the calendar from the next decade, our sport will race in every inhabited continent, bringing the World Championship closer than ever to fans around the globe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThis is about much more than hosting a Grand Prix. Together, we can create lasting economic and social benefits through tourism, investment, skills development and local business growth, ensuring the positive impact of this event is felt for generations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s hope so. Amnesty International says Rwandan authorities continue to \u2018suppress dissenting voices across political, civil society and labour sectors\u2019 and the nation\u2019s president \u2013 who has held office since 2000 \u2013 won the most recent election with 99.18 per cent of the vote. Which seems as likely as Lance Stroll winning Driver of the Day by a landslide.<\/p>\n
