to remove a lung nodule \u2014 a small growth of dense tissue inside the lung. Here is what to know about the procedure.<br \/>\n    <\/h2>\n<div class=\"c-article-content c-article-content--health js-article-content\">\n<p>Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to have an operation in the &#8220;coming days&#8221; to remove \u201ca localised nodule\u201d in his lung that was \u201cdetected at a very early stage.\u201d It is the first medical event of his 17-month papacy and the first time a pope has made a personal medical announcement of this kind. <\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-mobile-only\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\" alt loading=\"lazy\"><span>ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-desktop\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\" alt loading=\"lazy\"><span>ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Speaking on Sunday during his weekly address in St Peter&#8217;s Square, the 71-year-old pontiff said doctors found the nodule during \u201crecent checkups\u201d and believed intervention was best option.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have decided to undergo surgery to have it removed,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<h2>What is a pulmonary nodule?<\/h2>\n<p>Pulmonary nodules are round areas in the lung where the tissue is abnormally dense. They are usually non-cancerous; most small ones cause no symptoms and are discovered only during checks for other health issues.<\/p>\n<p>However, a small percentage can signal an early-stage lung cancer. The risk is higher in older people, smokers and those with a family history of the disease. <\/p>\n<p>If the nodule is cancerous and removed at an early stage, the prognosis is \u201cexcellent,\u201d and surgery alone may be sufficient treatment, Stephen Liu, a lung cancer expert at Georgetown\u2019s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, told the Associated Press. <\/p>\n<div class=\"c-widget-related\" data-stories-id data-event=\"widget_related\">\n<div class=\"c-widget-related__title\"><b class=\"c-widget-related__title__text\" lang=\"en\">Related<\/b><\/div>\n<ul class=\"c-widget-related__list\" id=\"abe-article-related-1\">\n<li class=\"c-widget-related__item\">Vatican says Catholics may receive animal organ transplants in new guidelines <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>How common are they and what causes them?<\/h2>\n<p>Lung nodules are very common and appear in roughly one-third to one-half of all chest CT scans or X-rays. Diagnoses are increasing as medical imaging technology and routine scans become more widespread. <\/p>\n<p>Pulmonary nodules fall into two main categories: cancerous (malignant) and non-cancerous (benign). <\/p>\n<p>Benign nodules, the most common type, can result from lung infections, such as pneumonia, or from inflammation. localised nodule\u201d in his lung that was \u201cdetected at a very early stage.\u201d It is the first medical event of his 17-month papacy and the first time a pope has made a personal medical announcement of this kind.\u00a0Speaking on Sunday during his weekly address in St Peter&#8217;s Square, the 71-year-old pontiff said doctors found the nodule during \u201crecent checkups\u201d and believed intervention was best option.\u201cI have decided to undergo surgery to have it removed,&#8221; he said.What is a pulmonary nodule?Pulmonary nodules are round areas in the lung where the tissue is abnormally dense. They are usually non-cancerous; most small ones cause no symptoms and are discovered only during checks for other health issues.However, a small percentage can signal an early-stage lung cancer. The risk is higher in older people, smokers and those with a family history of the disease.\u00a0\u00a0If the nodule is cancerous and removed at an early stage, the prognosis is \u201cexcellent,\u201d and surgery alone may be sufficient treatment, Stephen Liu, a lung cancer expert at Georgetown\u2019s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, told the Associated Press.\u00a0How common are they and what causes them?Lung nodules are very common and appear in roughly one-third to one-half of all chest CT scans or X-rays. Diagnoses are increasing as medical imaging technology and routine scans become more widespread.\u00a0Pulmonary nodules fall into two main categories: cancerous (malignant) and non-cancerous (benign).\u00a0Benign nodules, the most common type, can result from lung infections, such as pneumonia, or from inflammation. Malignant ones are caused by lung cancer or by cancer that has spread elsewhere in the body.\u00a0How is the surgery and the recovery?The operation to remove a nodule is normally carried out under general anaesthetic, with the patient breathing through a tube.The Vatican said the pontiff will undergo surgery early this week and is expected to remain in the hospital for about a week afterwards to recover.\u00a0The pope will be treated at Rome\u2019s Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic, a private non-profit Catholic teaching hospital.
