Groundbreaking\u201d in beauty, it might be \u201cblonde hair in the spring and summer, brunette shades in the fall and winter.\u201d (Though a compelling argument could be made that this autumn<\/a>, the color of choice is red \u2014 but that\u2019s another article<\/a>.) Clich\u00e9s exist for a reason, however; brown hair really does just hit different during the sweater seasons. Especially when it\u2019s espresso brunette, the cozy, shiny hue that\u2019s poised to become autumn\u2019s hottest dark hair color.<\/p>\n

This fall, the hue first made headlines on Dakota Johnson<\/a>, who stepped out with the glossy brown shade in September, after a spring and summer spent in darker blonde locks. \u201cThe goal was depth and shine, not a flat, solid brown,\u201d says celebrity hair colorist and Schwarzkopf Professional<\/a> U.S. creative director of color & technique Tracey Cunningham<\/a>, who created the actor\u2019s sultry new look. Not long after, Hailey Bieber also popped up<\/a> with espresso brown locks, hers with a slightly lighter base and cooler undertone. <\/p>\n

Celebrity hair colorist Matt Rez \u2014\u00a0the hands behind Bieber\u2019s new shade \u2014\u00a0previously told TZR<\/a> that \u201cvelvet espresso\u201d would be among the top trends for fall 2026, referring to the hue as \u201cthe hair-color equivalent of a luxe fall wardrobe.\u201d Much of its appeal lies in its dimension, an adjective not often used to describe very dark hair colors. \u201cRather than reading flat or overly dark, the color feels glossy, reflective, and expensive,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Fitting, considering this is the season of holiday spreads and seasonal treats. \u201cI think people are craving that kind of richness as we move into the cooler months,\u201d she adds. \u201cThere\u2019s also something really flattering about a deep brunette with a beautiful gloss. It catches the light and makes the hair look incredibly healthy and expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tone-wise, Shvonne Perkins<\/a>, master colorist and education director for Madison Reed<\/a>, considers the shade decidedly cool, with an ashiness and hints of violet and gold: \u201cIf the warm, reddish chestnut brunettes that typically trend in autumn are the pumpkin spice latte of hair color, espresso brunette is the classic Americano: the cooler, ashier choice you can wear all fall,\u201d she says. Cunningham is more flexible. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t have to mean one specific dark brown,\u201d she says. \u201cEspresso brown can range from cool-toned to warmer chocolate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Picking Your Perfect Shade<\/h2>\n

For Perkins, \u201cthe variations come from dimension, not from a different base. You can add high and lowlights in neutral-to-golden tones that offset the ash and emphasize that complex finish.\u201d For those with warmer undertones, she suggests neutral-to-golden ribbons; \u201ckeeping them softer and closer to the base leaves it cooler and smokier, which suits cool and neutral undertones.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI choose the direction based on the client\u2019s skin undertone, eye color, and natural starting level,\u201d says Cunningham. \u201cCooler espresso tends to be beautiful on cool or neutral complexions, while warmer chocolate tones can really complement golden or warm skin.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside the salon, \u201cuse color-safe products, avoid excessive shampooing, and protect the hair from heat,\u201d says Cunningham. \u201cWhen the hair is healthy and shiny, espresso brown looks its most luxurious.\u201d Perkins also suggests using a color-depositing mask, like Madison Reed\u2019s Caffe Color Therapy<\/a>, \u201cto keep it smoky and rich,\u201d she says. \u201cColor your roots only and gloss the mid-lengths and ends, so you avoid buildup that makes it look flat or too dark.\u201d<\/p>\n
