Funding trouble has been brewing at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam since at least 2023, when the museum began negotiating with the Dutch Ministry of Culture over the budget for a much-needed building renovation. In the summer of 2025, two years into the negotiations, museum director Emilie Gordenker told the New York Times that the current situation was “dangerous for the art and dangerous for our visitors.” The necessary repairs were so urgent that Gordenker worried the museum—one of the top tourist destinations in Amsterdam—might have to close.

On October 8 came news that the museum has reached an agreement with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science following mediation talks that both parties entered into in order to avoid a public court case. The Van Gogh Museum will now be able to proceed with the planned three-year renovation, set to begin in the fall of 2028. During this time, the museum will remain partially open to the public, and the permanent collection—including iconic van Gogh paintings like Sunflowers, The Bedroom, and The Harvest—will be on view.

The museum’s statement does not specify the exact terms of the settlement, but in 2025 the Times noted that the renovation was expected to cost a total of $121 million, $88 million of which would go toward maintenance and structural modernization. The museum typically receives a $10 million annual subsidy from the government, and had asked for nearly $3 million more per year in order to finance the extensive upgrades, most of which have to do with climate control, accessibility, fire safety, security, and sustainability.

“We are relieved and grateful to be able to move forward with this important project,” Gordenker said about the settlement.

The background of the dispute is more complicated than a simple culture sector funding squabble. Van Gogh’s nephew, also named Vincent, inherited his uncle’s unsold artworks from his mother Jo (Theo van Gogh’s widow), and donated the entirety of the remaining estate (over 200 paintings, 500 drawings, and 800 letters, plus other art that the family had collected over the years) to the newly established Vincent van Gogh Foundation in 1960. In 1962, the Dutch state signed an agreement with the foundation, promising to build a museum dedicated to the artist and (crucially) taking responsibility for maintaining the museum-to-be. Therein lies the years-long dispute between the museum and the state regarding who is responsible for paying for the renovations.

Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld was commissioned to design the Van Gogh Museum in 1963, and a decade later, it opened to the public on Amsterdam’s Museumplein. It has undergone several renovations over the past 50 years, and in 1999 a new wing designed by Kisho Kurokawa opened to house temporary exhibitions.

[analyse_source url=”https://www.artnews.com/art-news/news/van-gogh-museum-agreement-dutch-government-renovation-budget-1234801813/”]

[analyse_image type=”featured” src=”https://www.artnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/GettyImages-2167818481.jpg?w=1024″] Funding trouble has been brewing at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam since at least 2023, when the museum began negotiating with the Dutch Ministry of Culture over the budget for a much-needed building renovation.
