Online vigilantes have tried to expose the Cornell University student who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornellsun.com\/article\/2026\/09\/tccsuykuvb4z\">filed a lawsuit<\/a> accusing seven fraternity members of gang rape, and in so doing have invited a torrent of abuse on several other women. Her lawyers say three women have been falsely identified and harassed \u2014 and the real Jane Doe is being inundated with threats, too. \u201cShe\u2019s not doing well,\u201d her attorney Thomas Guiffra <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/10\/02\/us\/video\/cnn-sitroom-pamela-brown-thomas-giuffra-jane-doe-cornell-university-new-york-letitia-james\">told CNN<\/a> on Sunday. \u201cShe\u2019s under siege on social media, where people are trying to identify her.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The fact several women are now facing a torrent of online abuse in connection to Jane Doe\u2019s lawsuit isn\u2019t surprising. Targeted harassment and intimidation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/9\/18\/20870541\/vic-mignogna-metoo-accusations-defamation-lawsuit-anti-slapp-laws\">campaigns<\/a> were a hallmark of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/1\/15\/16893734\/metoo-movement-backlash\">backlash<\/a> to #MeToo. These targeted harassment campaigns were once organized on websites like <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=87443X1797501&amp;xs=1&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fgoogle.com%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Dkiwifarms%2Bsite%253Atheverge.com%26oq%3Dkiwifarms%2Bsite%253Atheverge.com%26gs_lcrp%3DEgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOdIBCDI5MDRqMGo3qAIAsAIA%26sourceid%3Dchrome%26source%3Dchrome.ob%26ie%3DUTF-8\" rel=\"sponsored\">Kiwi Farms and 4chan<\/a>. But the effort to unmask Jane Doe \u2014 and to terrorize any woman they believe to be Jane Doe \u2014 is happening right in the open, on mainstream social media platforms that aren\u2019t doing anything to stop it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Jane Doe\u2019s identity isn\u2019t a total secret: It\u2019s known to her attorneys, the judge presiding over the case, the seven men she\u2019s accusing of rape, and their attorneys, too. In civil cases, a plaintiff\u2019s anonymity is ultimately up to the judge, who weighs several factors, including whether identifying the plaintiff by name will put them at risk of physical or mental injury. \u201cIn New York, there\u2019s no automatic right to proceed anonymously,\u201d said Annie Seifullah, a founding partner at the victims\u2019 rights firm Incendii Law. Still, \u201cthe law recognizes that survivors\u2019 lives are routinely put on trial, and that forcing them to sue under their real names would keep many victims of sexual violence from coming forward at all.\u201d Similarly, journalistic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spj.org\/spj-code-of-ethics\/\">ethics guides<\/a> typically suggest showing sensitivity to victims of alleged sex crimes, and reporters will often allow people alleging abuse to do so anonymously, so long as their identity can be independently corroborated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The attempt to expose Jane Doe began on X, where Substack author and podcast host Michael Tracey \u2014 who is perhaps best known for his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/journalist-epstein-skepticism-michael-tracey-1236513005\/\">skepticism toward the allegations made about Jeffrey Epstein<\/a> \u2014 solicited information about her. Tracey said he considered her identity fair game \u201csince her lawsuit didn\u2019t hesitate to name &amp; shame 7 of her peers as gang-rapists.\u201d Aidan Thompson, founder of the <em>AF Post<\/em> \u2014 a publication dedicated to articulating \u201cthe ideas, beliefs, and values of the America First Movement\u201d \u2014 also asked for help identifying Jane Doe. \u201cBeev, please help me discover the Cornell girl,\u201d he posted on September 29th, referring to the \u201cburnerverse,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/burnerverse-maddie-kowalski\/\">network of anonymous X accounts<\/a> whose members discuss college sports and wage harassment campaigns against women with equal zeal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cThe fact that people are trying so hard to dox her and are harassing her and others \u2014 women they just <em>think<\/em> might be her \u2014 underscores how serious her privacy interest really is,\u201d said Katie McKay, a senior associate at C.A. Goldberg, a victims\u2019 rights firm that specializes in tech-facilitated abuse. \u201cObviously the anonymity is necessary. It\u2019s protecting her, to some extent, from even more harassment, even more targeting and retaliation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">X\u2019s terms of service expressly prohibits users from sharing a person\u2019s private information without their consent, and from threatening to do so; the site has also banned people who post the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/social-media\/elon-musk-x-bans-revealing-names-anonymous-users-cartoon-rcna144486\">alleged names<\/a> of pseudonymous users. But non-users\u2019 names and photos aren\u2019t considered \u201cprivate information,\u201d even if they can be used to dig up <em>actual<\/em> private details like their phone number or home address. X\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/help.x.com\/en\/rules-and-policies\/abusive-behavior\">rules<\/a> also say users \u201cmay not target others with abuse or harassment, or encourage other people to do so,\u201d but the platform is flooded with posts disparaging women believed to be Jane Doe. X did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">On X, Thompson posted photos and biographical details of a woman he claimed was Jane Doe. Tracey later identified the same woman as Jane Doe on his Substack, claiming to have seen her name on court records. In fact, Tracey got the name from a court records <em>aggregator<\/em> \u2014 a website that, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jaredlholt\/status\/2106090285109219617\">according to<\/a> disinformation researcher Jared Holt, was registered in mid-September and seems to selectively post information about <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jaredlholt\/status\/2106090288569790723\">polarizing cases<\/a>, like Clavicular\u2019s and Lindsay Clancy\u2019s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Despite Tracey\u2019s repeated assertions that Jane Doe\u2019s identity was a matter of public interest, many comments on his Substack post focused on the purported Jane Doe\u2019s sex appeal and how this related to the veracity of her allegations. On X, dozens if not hundreds of people \u2014 ranging from anonymous accounts to prominent right-wing commentators \u2014 are now scrutinizing her appearance, making sexual comments about her, and disparaging her boyfriend. Anonymous accounts have circulated her Instagram and TikTok posts and made AI deepfakes of the woman Tracey and Thompson named.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Substack, too, is known for its lax content moderation policies. The platform has taken a laissez-faire approach to publishing, and in 2023 infamously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/12\/21\/24011232\/substack-nazi-moderation-demonetization-hamish-mckenzie\">refused to remove or demonetize several Nazi publications<\/a> from its website. Tracey has seemingly benefited from his posts about Jane Doe: Substack lists his newsletter as 66th on its politics leaderboard. Substack did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement _1xorkac2 _1xorkac0 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote c39lj10\">\n<div class=\"c39lj11\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup c39lj12 _19wv7tc9\">Most survivors don\u2019t report and this is why.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Tracey, for his part, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mtracey.net\/p\/note-on-jane-doe\">deleted<\/a> the post in which he claimed to have identified Jane Doe \u2014 not because of his shoddy sourcing but because he claimed to have made his point: High-profile litigants shouldn\u2019t be allowed to be anonymous, especially when accusing others of rape. \u201cThat\u2019s all I ever sought to accomplish here,\u201d he wrote. \u201cNot to impugn this young woman on a personal level. I have no animus toward her, and never have. I sincerely wish her the best, and hope her life is not defined by this calamity.\u201d Tracey did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Jane Doe isn\u2019t anonymous to the court. \u201cUnderlying this is the belief that it\u2019s somehow unfair to these defendants that she\u2019s anonymous and they\u2019re not. But they know who she is,\u201d McKay said. \u201cI don\u2019t see a lack of accountability, even as a Jane Doe, in voluntarily subjecting your claims to the scrutiny of a court, with the subpoena power and the discovery power of the court.\u201d Because the defendants know Jane Doe\u2019s identity, their attorneys will be able to request access to her medical records, psychiatric records, and personal communications. \u201cIf the worry is that she wouldn\u2019t be held accountable for any kind of false allegation, the whole process is designed to vet these allegations and only allow the claim to move forward \u2014 and her to potentially recover anything \u2014 if it\u2019s deemed meritorious upon examination of all this evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">And regardless of their stated motivations for doing so, anyone who has spent any time on X since 2022 (or the internet more broadly) would know that identifying a woman as Jane Doe would inevitably result in that woman getting a torrent of abuse. Either Thompson and Tracey identified and directed harassment toward an alleged rape victim, or they directed harassment toward an unrelated woman in their quest to expose the identity of an alleged rape victim. These harassment campaigns reverberate beyond their intended targets, creating a broader culture of intimidation. \u201cI\u2019ve already had many clients call me to ask if they should be worried about being doxxed over their Jane Doe status,\u201d said Seifullah, the victims\u2019 rights attorney. \u201cMost survivors don\u2019t report and this is why.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Ironically, Tracey is now complaining that an online mob is not only going after his family but also targeting the new owners of his childhood home, to which he has no relation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Harassment of people who come forward with sexual assault allegations isn\u2019t a new phenomenon, andbut McKay noted that stringent efforts were taken to protect the identity of Emily Doe, woman who accused Stanford swimmer Brock Turner of rape in 2015, and \u201cI don\u2019t recall much of a doxxing campaign,\u201d McKay said \u2014 even after Emily Doe\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/katiejmbaker\/heres-the-powerful-letter-the-stanford-victim-read-to-her-ra\">victim impact statement<\/a> went viral. When <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5879561\/chanel-miller-on-coming-forward-know-my-name\/\">Chanel Miller came forward four years later<\/a>, the news of her identity was truly revelatory even to those who had criticized her during Turner\u2019s high-profile trial.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cI think the interest in \u2018exposing\u2019 victims is going to be magnified these days,\u201d McKay said. Though it\u2019s impossible to pinpoint what changed, McKay pointed to harassment campaigns directed at Amber Heard and E. Jean Carroll, two women who publicly accused famous men of rape. \u201cThose women were publicly identified, and they were torn to shreds, viciously attacked by the public,\u201d McKay said. \u201cI don\u2019t know if perhaps that\u2019s created more of an interest or an expectation that every case is going to let observers who are non-litigants pick apart the victim, but it seems pretty clear to me that\u2019s what they want to do here.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement _1xorkac1 _1xorkac0 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<div class=\"ejz0tzd\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Just like the #MeToo movement encouraged women to share their stories, the attempt to expose Jane Doe has generated a new wave of solidarity. On TikTok and Instagram, hundreds of women responded to Tracey\u2019s request for information about the alleged Cornell victim with an \u201cI am Spartacus\u201d-esque campaign in which they proclaim to be Jane Doe. Some women are even coming forward with their own stories of sexual assault.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Sarah Lupica, a 24-year-old content creator with more than 1.5 million followers on TikTok, posted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@sarah.lupica\/video\/7691482434382155038\">video<\/a> about being sexually assaulted when she was 16 years old. \u201cFor the longest time, I blamed myself for being in that situation,\u201d Lupica told me. Until now, she said, she lacked the language to explain what happened to her. Lupica was 13 years old at the height of #MeToo and had no recollection of the movement. It didn\u2019t reach her. The moment passed, the culture changed, and the abuse of women persisted in a culture that is even more hostile to survivors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">For Lupica, #IAmJaneDoe is a way of not only sharing her own story but showing other women that they aren\u2019t alone. Lupica said she felt emboldened by the amount of other women who were coming forward. \u201cI was really touched by it, and the whole movement of saying \u2018I am Jane Doe,\u2019\u201d she told me. \u201cIt\u2019s saying you stand with her and with everyone who\u2019s been scared to speak \u2014 survivors who never got justice and girls who are really trying to understand what happened to
