The power purchase agreement is meant to guarantee the revenue needed to cover the cost of efficiency upgrades at existing nuclear plants and \u201crepresents more than $4.3 billion of new investment by Constellation,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.googlecloudpresscorner.com\/2026-10-06-Google-and-Constellation-Announce-Landmark-Agreement-to-Bring-890-MW-of-New-Nuclear-Capacity-to-PJM-Grid-as-Part-of-Long-Term-Power-Deal\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Over the next five years, the companies expect new equipment at each site to collectively lead to 890 megawatts of additional nuclear capacity. That\u2019s roughly equivalent to the amount of electricity one large new nuclear reactor or three small modular reactors might generate, according to Google and Constellation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement _1xorkac2 _1xorkac0 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote c39lj10\">\n<div class=\"c39lj11\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup c39lj12 _19wv7tc9\">PJM has struggled lately to meet growing demand from AI data centers<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">They plan to modernize 11 reactors at six sites in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Each is connected to the PJM Interconnection grid, the largest power grid in the US, which spans 13 states and the District of Columbia \u2014 including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/cs\/features\/975597\/loudoun-county-virginia-data-center-backlash\/\">nation\u2019s largest hub for data centers in Loudoun County, Virginia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/heatmap.news\/energy\/pjm-interconnection-reforms\">PJM has<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/heatmap.news\/energy\/pjm-data-center-plan\">struggled<\/a> lately to meet growing demand from AI data centers. An independent market monitor filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/elibrary.ferc.gov\/eLibrary\/filelist?accession_number=20251125-5275&amp;optimized=false&amp;sid=53de8368-82a1-4e72-a2c3-b9a3fbc0073c\">complaint<\/a> last year with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) saying that PJM was planning to allow huge data centers to connect to the grid that it could not reliably serve, which could lead to blackouts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">In January, the Trump administration and governors from all of the states where PJM operates issued a joint <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/documents\/statement-principles-regarding-pjm\">statement<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/863620\/data-centers-ai-power-auction-trump\">calling on PJM to hold an \u201cemergency\u201d power auction<\/a> to support the buildout of new power plants through long-term contracts. PJM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utilitydive.com\/news\/pjm-delays-backstop-procurement-ferc-data-center\/831751\/\">postponed its auction<\/a> last week following a <a href=\"https:\/\/elibrary.ferc.gov\/eLibrary\/filelist?accession_number=20260929-3099&amp;optimized=false\">directive from FERC<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/ferc-asks-grid-operator-pjm-revise-plan-shield-homes-data-center-costs-2026-09-30\/\">to revise its proposal<\/a> in order to ensure stronger protections to prevent data centers from raising electricity bills for other customers. Electricity rates have skyrocketed in states connected to PJM, including New Jersey, where prices have <a href=\"https:\/\/electricity.heatmap.news\/?_gl=1*1mucspm*_gcl_au*MTkxODA0MzIwMy4xNzg3NTkwNTU3\">climbed 54 percent over five years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Along with the nuclear power deal, Google also inked a separate, much larger 15-year energy supply agreement with Constellation meant to guarantee continued revenue for other existing power plants Constellation operates within PJM, regardless of fuel type. Nuclear energy made up 70 percent of Constellation\u2019s total generating capacity last year, and another 8 percent came from renewables. Gas and oil made up the remaining 22 percent, according to the company\u2019s latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constellationenergy.com\/impact\/sustainability\/sustainability-report.html\">sustainability report<\/a>. Gas also accounts for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pjm.com\/markets-and-operations.aspx\">largest chunk of PJM\u2019s fuel mix<\/a>. At 2,700MW, the second deal is much larger than the nuclear power purchase agreement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Data centers are driving a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/us-data-centers-drive-gas-power-expansion\/\">surge in new gas infrastructure projects<\/a> in the US, moving many tech companies further from their sustainability goals. Google\u2019s carbon emissions rose by 18 percent last year along with a jump in electricity demand of 37 percent, according to the company\u2019s latest sustainability <a
