US District Judge Amit Mehta takes Google\u2019s side <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/28712400-penske-and-chegg-v-google-dismissal\/\">in a ruling on Wednesday<\/a>, writing that PMC and Chegg\u2019s claims don\u2019t stand up to antitrust law.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/619051\/chegg-google-ai-overviews-monopoly\">lawsuits filed last year, Chegg<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/777788\/rolling-stone-penske-media-sue-google-ai-overviews\">PMC accused Google<\/a> of abusing its monopoly power by coercing publishers into supplying content for AI Overviews for free, or risk disappearing from search results. The publishers alleged Google\u2019s practices diverted traffic away from their sites, hurting their revenue.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Judge Mehta, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/8\/5\/24155520\/judge-rules-on-us-doj-v-google-antitrust-search-suit\">made a landmark antitrust ruling<\/a> against Google in 2024, disagrees with Chegg and PMC\u2019s claims. \u201cPlaintiffs have pleaded only that they have an \u2018expectation\u2019 that Google will send them search \u200btraffic if they make their content available for free,\u201d Mehta writes. \u201cBut an expectation is not an agreement.
