Yesterday evening (September 29), the Belgian designer marked his 10th anniversary at the brand with one of his greatest collections to date. In fact, it was the type of show that only comes around once a decade and will be remembered in the fashion history books. The type of show that makes you wonder, is there something they\u2019re not telling us? For several weeks, rumours of Vaccarello\u2019s departure have circulated on the internet. And while we remain adamantly in denial, if we know anything about fashion farewells, it\u2019s that they tend to go a little something like this\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>YSL MOUNT RUSHMORE<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>The first indication of Vaccarello\u2019s swan song came via the megawatt line-up of A-list supporters. Some of the biggest names in fashion, music and film all assembled on the front row \u2013 a Mount Rushmore of YSL ambassadors featuring Kate Moss, Zo\u00eb Kravitz, Ros\u00e9, Jerry Hall, Georgia May Jagger, Hailey Bieber, Carla Bruni and Bella Freud. There may not have been a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/70513\/1\/saint-laurent-ss27-paris-fashion-week-mens-madonna-charli-xcx-connor-storrie\"><span>Madonna appearance<\/span><\/a><span> this season, but we did get Francis Ford Coppola, Rami Malek, Mark Ronson, Amber Valletta, Amelia Gray, Gabbriette, Zo\u00eb Salda\u00f1a, Farida Khelfa and Eva Herzigov\u00e1, to name a few. The real evidence of a designer\u2019s final show often comes in the form of support from their contemporaries. If other designers are spotted in attendance there\u2019s usually a reason, and sadly, Donatella and Pierpaolo both sat front row. <\/span><span>What\u2019s more, if that wasn\u2019t enough to confirm it, all the celebrities were dressed head-to-toe in black, as if already mourning Vaccarello\u2019s departure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>THE EIFFEL TOWER KNEW WHAT TO DO <\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>As usual, the Eiffel Tower provided a breathtaking backdrop. Its gold glow was echoed by three spectacular chandeliers that hung above the runway, recreating the grand ballroom of the InterContinental Paris Le Grand hotel where Monsieur Saint Laurent once hosted his couture salons. Each chandelier had three tiers, perfectly mimicking the shape of the Eiffel Tower, which became a fourth chandelier in itself. As it does every hour, during the finale, the monument began to sparkle \u2013 making the moment all the more emotional.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>ANTHONY VACCARELLO\u2019S GOLDEN AGE <\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>\u201cWhat passes sometimes leaves more light than what remains,\u201d Vaccarello explained in the show notes. A golden age is usually something that exists in the past \u2013 it\u2019s romanticised in a way that means nothing modern could ever compare. But while fashion is a deeply nostalgic industry, this collection forced us to focus on the present, showing us that Vaccarello\u2019s golden age is here and now. 49 of the 59 total looks had been dipped in sumptuous, shimmering gold. He took YSL classics \u2013 fierce tailoring, trench coats, pencil skirts, padded shoulders and frilled blouses \u2013 and gave them the Midas Touch. However, the moral of the Midas Touch is knowing when you\u2019ve got too much gold on your hands, and as a result, the final 10 looks of the collection arrived in all black. Like a shadow cast by the brightness of the collection, the closing looks were a reminder that you cannot have one without the other, while also paying homage to the designer\u2019s Belgian roots. As every model returned to the spectacular, chandelier-lined catwalk, Charlotte Gainsbourg left her seat and entered the middle of the runway, microphone in hand, and began serenading the audience. Was this a literal swan song for the designer\u2019s (alleged) exit?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>With Gainsbourg\u2019s velvet voice floating beneath a seductive saxophone line, the song was clearly a touching tribute to her friend Vaccarello, with its instant classic lyric \u201c<\/span><em><span>You Are So Yves Saint Laurent<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d drifting across the 7th arrondissement. Yesterday evening (September 29), the Belgian designer marked his 10th anniversary at the brand with one of his greatest collections to date. In fact, it was the type of show that only comes around once a decade and will be remembered in the fashion history books. The type of show that makes you wonder, is there something they\u2019re not telling us? For several weeks, rumours of Vaccarello\u2019s departure have circulated on the internet. And while we remain adamantly in denial, if we know anything about fashion farewells, it\u2019s that they tend to go a little something like this\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>YSL MOUNT RUSHMORE<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>The first indication of Vaccarello\u2019s swan song came via the megawatt line-up of A-list supporters. Some of the biggest names in fashion, music and film all assembled on the front row \u2013 a Mount Rushmore of YSL ambassadors featuring Kate Moss, Zo\u00eb Kravitz, Ros\u00e9, Jerry Hall, Georgia May Jagger, Hailey Bieber, Carla Bruni and Bella Freud. There may not have been a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/70513\/1\/saint-laurent-ss27-paris-fashion-week-mens-madonna-charli-xcx-connor-storrie\"><span>Madonna appearance<\/span><\/a><span> this season, but we did get Francis Ford Coppola, Rami Malek, Mark Ronson, Amber Valletta, Amelia Gray, Gabbriette, Zo\u00eb Salda\u00f1a, Farida Khelfa and Eva Herzigov\u00e1, to name a few. The real evidence of a designer\u2019s final show often comes in the form of support from their contemporaries. If other designers are spotted in attendance there\u2019s usually a reason, and sadly, Donatella and Pierpaolo both sat front row. <\/span><span>What\u2019s more, if that wasn\u2019t enough to confirm it, all the celebrities were dressed head-to-toe in black, as if already mourning Vaccarello\u2019s departure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>THE EIFFEL TOWER KNEW WHAT TO DO <\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>As usual, the Eiffel Tower provided a breathtaking backdrop. Its gold glow was echoed by three spectacular chandeliers that hung above the runway, recreating the grand ballroom of the InterContinental Paris Le Grand hotel where Monsieur Saint Laurent once hosted his couture salons. Each chandelier had three tiers, perfectly mimicking the shape of the Eiffel Tower, which became a fourth chandelier in itself. As it does every hour, during the finale, the monument began to sparkle \u2013 making the moment all the more emotional.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>ANTHONY VACCARELLO\u2019S GOLDEN AGE <\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>\u201cWhat passes sometimes leaves more light than what remains,\u201d Vaccarello explained in the show notes. A golden age is usually something that exists in the past \u2013 it\u2019s romanticised in a way that means nothing modern could ever compare. But while fashion is a deeply nostalgic industry, this collection forced us to focus on the present, showing us that Vaccarello\u2019s golden age is here and now. 49 of the 59 total looks had been dipped in sumptuous, shimmering gold. He took YSL classics \u2013 fierce tailoring, trench coats, pencil skirts, padded shoulders and frilled blouses \u2013 and gave them the Midas Touch. However, the moral of the Midas Touch is knowing when you\u2019ve got too much gold on your hands, and as a result, the final 10 looks of the collection arrived in all black. Like a shadow cast by the brightness of the collection, the closing looks were a reminder that you cannot have one without the other, while also paying homage to the designer\u2019s Belgian roots. It\u2019s true that the memory of something often shines brighter than what remains, and if this really is Vaccarello\u2019s final show, he certainly made sure his legacy would sparkle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>A LITERAL SWAN SONG<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"231a637a-1e26-410f-bdb5-b4d401801406\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1450\/6\/1456250.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.5\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Saint Laurent SS27\" class=\"img\" height=\"2000\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1450\/6\/1456250.jpg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"caption\">Anthony Vaccarello and Charlotte Gainsbourg at Saint <span class=\"nowrap\">Laurent SS27<\/span><\/span><span class=\"credit\">Photography Vittorio Zunino Celotto via <span class=\"nowrap\">Getty Images<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>If the megawatt frow and golden garments weren\u2019t enough to hint at Vaccarello\u2019s exit, then the dramatic finale sealed the deal. As every model returned to the spectacular, chandelier-lined catwalk, Charlotte Gainsbourg left her seat and entered the middle of the runway, microphone in hand, and began serenading the audience. Was this a literal swan song for the designer\u2019s (alleged) exit?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>With Gainsbourg\u2019s velvet voice floating beneath a seductive saxophone line, the song was clearly a touching tribute to her friend Vaccarello, with its instant classic lyric \u201c<\/span><em><span>You Are So Yves Saint Laurent<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d drifting across the 7th arrondissement.
