Perhaps the closest thing in North America to European-style big-mountain skiing and riding is a single, isolated chairlift in Colorado\u2019s rugged San Juan Mountains.<\/strong> Silverton Mountain<\/a> operates like a pure backcountry zone that happens to have a mechanical lift. There are no groomed trails or clear-cut runs here. To even step foot on the lone chairlift during its unguided spring window, you are legally required to carry\u2014and show at the ticket counter\u2014an avalanche beacon, shovel, and probe. While ski patrol routinely performs avalanche mitigation inside the area\u2019s un-marked resort boundaries, the terrain remains entirely wild. Skiers must successfully route-find through steep chutes, bowls, and mandatory hiking zones reaching a peak elevation of 13,487 feet, where a single wrong turn can leave you trapped above high-consequence cliffs.<\/p>\n

#4 Gulmarg Ski Resort<\/a>, India<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The highest gondola in Asia drops skiers straight into the vast Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas, unloading at an elevation of 13,054 feet on the shoulder of Mount Afarwat.<\/strong> While the terrain offers legendary deep-snow runs, the area has been marred by repeated avalanche fatalities since the lift\u2019s completion in 2005. The local snow safety team performs avalanche mitigation within the resort\u2019s central, designated bowl. However, the moment a skier steps outside that boundary, they enter volatile high-alpine backcountry with a history of slides. Dropping into these vast Himalayan slopes requires extreme caution, a trusted guide, and expert route-finding skills.<\/p>\n

    #3 Aiguille du Midi<\/a>, France<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    The Chamonix valley is comprised of many different ski areas.<\/strong> Aiguille du Midi<\/a> is famous for providing direct access to the legendary Vall\u00e9e Blanche and extreme big-mountain lines like the Couloir des Cosmiques and Mallory. Unloading at a staggering 12,605 feet, every single run here starts with an intimidating boot pack down a razor-thin, exposed snow ridge. Skiers must carry their gear on their backs and slowly hike down this knife-edge with multi-thousand-foot drops on either side. Unlike standard ski resorts, there are absolutely no marked pistes or ski patrol teams here. Turn the wrong way, and you are on a slide for life in any direction.<\/p>\n

    On the Italian side of Mont Blanc, the rotating cable car Skyway Monte Bianco<\/a> unloads riders at an elevation of 11,371 feet.<\/strong> Built as a tourist attraction to compete with the French side, the upgraded system replaced the antiquated Hellbronner cable cars. The terrain off of the Skyway is spectacular, steep, and exposed, with absolutely no marked pistes. While it provides alternative access to the Vall\u00e9e Blanche and shares similarities with the Aiguille du Midi<\/a>, the terrain on the Italian side has one much bigger risk factor: it is an entirely south-facing amphitheatre. When the intense afternoon sun hits these steep walls, it aggressively destabilizes the snowpack, making it highly volatile and more prone to avalanches.<\/p>\n
